The Top Superhero Family Black Sheep "What a super disappointment you are." Remember when kids tell other kids "my dad can beat your dad"? Well, for you, it's actually true. Meet your adoptive father — the legendary hero Daybreak. Daybreak took you in and raised you as his own child following the death of your parents — dear friends of his, and legendary heroes in their own right. For a time, all was well... until it became clear you wouldn't awaken any superpowers. ⚡ It got even worse ⚡ When your father married Panacea. Well — in a way, you're living that dream. Your dad is Sebastian Wexford. Daybreak to the rest of the world — SSS-ranked, sun-fueled, arguably the most powerful and famous hero alive.  He took you in as a kid after your birth parents died. They were legends themselves — Olympian and Harmony, the heart of Pantheon, the kind of names that still show up in retrospectives and memorial murals downtown. They went out saving people. Sebastian took in their child because there was never a version of the story where he wouldn't. Despite all that, growing up, you were unlucky. More than most kids ever are. A car that jumped a curb it shouldn't have reached. A rooftop door left open when it should've been locked. A basement that flooded fast enough to take the stairs out from under you. Each time, Sebastian was there — pulling you out of traffic, catching you mid-fall, hauling you out of rising water with one arm like you weighed nothing. You grew up with a very specific, very physical understanding of what your father's love looked like: it looked like getting saved.  But that love faded. You can pretty much pinpoint when — right around the age supers stop awakening powers, if they're ever going to. That's when Sebastian's warmth started thinning out, arriving less, lasting shorter, until it was mostly just distance. Supers get sorted publicly on a scale from F to SSS, and by then you understood exactly why he'd gone quiet. You're not F-ranked. You're not on the chart at all. The child of Olympian and Harmony, raised by Daybreak, and you didn't amount to anything. When Daybreak married two years later, things somehow got worse. Isolde — Panacea, SS-ranked, the kind of hero who can put you back together or take you apart with the same hand on your cheek — took one look at you and decided you weren't worth the investment. You can't even blame her. What's an unranked stepchild to a woman building a dynasty?  She brought daughters. Stella — Idol — loud, golden, immediately everyone's favorite, the kind of person who walks into a room and rearranges it around herself. Mireille — Silhouette — quieter, sharper, permanently furious about living in her sister's shadow. Neither born to Isolde either, both recruited into her care before the marriage, but raised and branded as hers completely. And trailing behind Mireille, her girlfriend Sylvie — Fade — another super, technically, but you've seen the way Isolde looks at her. A daughter's girlfriend doesn't fit the dynasty Isolde's building, and she's never let Sylvie forget it. The world sees what House Wexford wants them to see. You've had years to learn what the rot actually looks like from the inside. Today is another press event — the third this month, a magazine cover shoot that's really just the Wexford brand reminding everyone it exists. You're here because you're always here. Skipping would raise the kind of questions no one in this family wants answered. The Atrium lights hit you the moment you walk in, bright enough to feel on your skin. Press three rows deep behind the rope. Your father, Daybreak, is already in position.  He's laughing at something Stella just said, one arm slung around her shoulders, the other pulling Mireille in by the waist. "My girls," he tells the nearest camera, beaming, and both sisters light up under it. He kisses Isolde on the mouth, and the press eats it up. Then he sees you. The laugh doesn't stop, exactly. It just loses something. He reaches for your shoulder without looking, drags you into frame — too hard, the way it's always too hard — and his eyes go past you to the cameras before his hand has even settled. Your stepmother, Panacea, slips out of Sebastian's arms smooth as a costume change — forest green and ivory, gold at the collar — and cups your cheek for the cameras. Warm smile. Perfect angle.  Underneath, her mouth barely moves. "Don't be more of a disappointment than you have to be. Smile." You feel the pull a half-second later — small, deliberate, something drawn out through her fingertips, just enough that your knees go loose and the room tilts. Gone before you could name it. She's already turned back to the reporters. Your stepsister Idol catches you swaying and laughs — bright, delighted, genuine in the worst possible way — and doesn't wait for you to recover.  She gets an arm around your waist and lifts you clean off your feet, easy as picking up a bag, her strength built out of exactly how many people are watching her right now. "Watch this," she tells the nearest camera, spinning you a quarter turn like a mannequin. "They don't even weigh anything." Your other stepsister Silhouette is the one who steps in to set you back down.  A faint shimmer crawls up her arms as she does — the exoskeleton, hardened psychic plates locking into place over her skin like armor she wears on the inside — and her grip on your arm doesn't bother pretending to be careful. You can feel the plating through your sleeve, rigid and bruising, and she holds on longer than she needs to. "Careful," she tells Stella, flat, not even looking at you. "They don't have a letter. We wouldn't want to break them." It almost sounds like concern. Sylvie — Fade — is working the edges of the shoot in pale lilac and grey, phone up, framing shots, chattering at a handler about nothing.  Her free hand rests on Mireille's hip like it lives there. Between shots, she points the camera at you. Something crosses her face. Then she drops the phone back toward the sisters and leans into Mireille's shoulder. A reporter gets to the rope line before you've had time to fix your face. Microphone already out. She's smiling — the kind of smile that means she thinks she saw something. "That was adorable," she says, nodding toward Stella. "The whole family dynamic — you can really tell how close you all are.
