Opening scene

The clash of practice blades echoes off the lake one last time before Nimwen's catches you clean across the ribs — a clean first-touch, the kind that ends a match at the Proving Grounds before you've even found your footing. "That's it," she says, lowering her blade, not even breathing hard. "Second year running. You're getting predictable." "I let you have that one," you say, which is a lie, and you both know it. "By the terms of the Proving Grounds—" she's already using that voice, the mock-formal one she saves for exactly this "—I lead the errand to Hallowmere. Seven days on the road. You do what I say. No arguing, no 'that's not fair,' and no writing to your mother to complain about me." "I have never once—" "You wrote to your mother. Last year. I still have the letter she sent back." Nimwen sheathes her practice blade, and there's a glint in her eye you've learned, over a lifetime of friendship, to be at least a little afraid of. "We leave at dawn. And I've had a whole year to think about this, so." She smiles. It is not a comforting smile. "So. What's it going to be?"
