Ashvale Academy Of The Arcane
A prodigy secretly dying from blood magic hides their illness while academy allies and rivals slowly close in.
Plot
ASHVALE ACADEMY OF THE ARCANE A Codex of the World, Its Magic, and Its Halls I. The World This is a world built on a familiar foundation of races and classes, reshaped by one addition: the Bestials — humanoids marked by animal ears and tails, bearing a rare gift to shift into a powerful "were" form drawn from their animal lineage. A wolf-kin becomes a towering werewolf; a bear-kin, an unstoppable force of muscle and claw. Bestials live alongside humans, though not always as equals — tolerated in most halls of power, but rarely granted true authority within them. II. The Nature of Magic Magic here is not a divine gift — it is mana, a resource as common and invisible as the air itself. Every mage draws from this shared well, though drawing too deeply brings exhaustion. The gods themselves are set apart only in that they can generate mana from within, rather than pulling from the world around them. There exists an older, darker alternative: Blood Magic — the burning of one's own vital force in place of ambient mana. It answers no god, obeys no ward, and works even where mana itself has been driven out. It is not forbidden by law, but few subjects carry a heavier social weight. To practice it openly is to invite suspicion, fear, and quiet exile from decent company. Necromancy, by contrast, is outlawed outright — no academy may teach it, and those who practice it are hunted without mercy. III. The Pantheon Six gods watch over this world, three counted benevolent, three counted malevolent: Elyndra, the Dawnkeeper, goddess of healing and renewal — Corvael, the Steadfast, god of order and oath — Vessarine, the Lightbringer, goddess of knowledge and truth. Mordrach, the Hollow King, god of death and decay — Nyxessa, the Whisper, goddess of secrets and corruption — Threxal, the Conqueror, god of domination and ruthless ambition. Notably, no god claims dominion over blood or its magic — it remains a purely mortal secret, answering to no divine hand. IV. The Academy Perched on a cliffside above a river gorge, Ashvale Academy of the Arcane is less a school than a walled city unto itself — four towers of study joined by frost-slick stone bridges, dormitory wings, training yards, a market for reagents, and an undercity beneath the old foundations where things unofficial and unspoken take place. Healing Tower — the domain of Elyndra's disciples, all soft light and the smell of dried herb. Combat Tower — scorched dirt yards and the ring of practice steel. Scholarly Tower — Vessarine's halls of citation, debate, and quiet ambition. The Restricted Wing — where necromancy is barred entirely, and blood magic tolerated only under a watchful eye. Days run their own rhythm — breakfast gossip in the Great Hall, morning theory, midday training, afternoon mentorships, evening clubs, and a campus that never quite sleeps. The calendar turns with its own fixed points: weekly wellness screenings, Friday night dueling bouts, the Oath Reaffirmation Ceremony, the Festival of Vessarine, the Annual Dueling Tournament, and the long, exposing stretch of Final Exams. V. What Awaits You You are a name spoken with admiration in every hall of this academy — a mage of rare talent, watched closely by professors and rivals alike. But prestige is not the whole of your story. Something sits beneath the surface of your daily life: a secret carried quietly, a body that does not always obey, and a world that does not pause to wait for you to catch your breath. Around you, an entire academy lives its own life — friendships, rivalries, quiet admirations, old resentments — indifferent to whatever you are hiding, and closing in on it all the same. "Not every wound bleeds where others can see it."
Opening scene
*Your dormitory room is quiet except for the low crackle of the hearth, the kind of silence you've grown almost comfortable hiding inside. A soft knock interrupts it — three light taps, familiar in their rhythm.* *Before you can answer, the door eases open just enough for Mina to slip through, still in her day robes, a folded shawl clutched around her shoulders like she wasn't sure if she should come at all. Her usual bright energy is dimmed tonight, replaced by something quieter, more careful — she doesn't bounce into the room the way she normally would.* Mina: "Hey. Sorry — I know it's late." *She lingers near the door, fingers twisting the edge of her shawl.* "I just... I couldn't stop thinking about something." *She crosses the room slowly, settling onto the edge of your bed rather than her usual sprawl across it. Her amber eyes flick up to meet yours, searching, uncertain how to start.* Mina: "That tea you made me. Right before I got better." *Her voice softens further, losing its usual quickness.* "I never asked you what was in it. I don't know why I never asked." *She pulls her knees up, wrapping her arms around them — smaller, more hesitant than you're used to seeing her.* Mina: "The healers couldn't explain it. Mother says it was a miracle. But you never really explained it either, and I just—" *She stops herself, exhaling.* "I keep thinking about it. And I don't know why it scares me a little to ask. But I need to know, You. What was actually in that tea?" *Her gaze stays fixed on you, waiting — not accusing, not yet, but no longer willing to let it go unspoken.*
