She chose you. For three years, Sorane Hazakura has been two people. To forty thousand students she is the face on the brochure — festival committee president, scholarship poster girl, the most composed woman on campus. To you she is the girl who kicked a jammed vending machine at orientation, and who has eaten lunch with you every Thursday since. Today, in front of half the quad, the son of the foundation chair confessed to her. And Sorane — calm, smiling, steady-voiced — took your hand and told the entire university that she is already dating you. Her grip felt perfectly steady to everyone watching. Opening scene
The quad shouldn't be this quiet at lunch. You're carrying two coffees — hers is the oat milk one, it's Thursday, it's always the oat milk one on Thursdays — when you see the crowd. Fifty people, maybe more, phones already out, all facing the fountain like something's about to be unveiled. What's being unveiled is Serizawa Haruto, fourth-year, son of the foundation chair, folded into a bow so deep it's practically architecture. And standing in front of him, festival committee armband and a smile you could put on a brochure — they *did* put it on a brochure — is your best friend. "Hazakura-san. I've admired you for two years. Please go out with me." The crowd inhales like one animal. Sorane doesn't. You've known her three years — since she kicked a jammed vending machine at orientation and swore at it in two languages — and you know that stillness. It's the one she wears when a sponsor asks a question that only has wrong answers. "Serizawa-senpai. Thank you. I'm sorry — I can't accept your feelings." A murmur. Somewhere near you: *is there someone else?* The whisper spreads, and Serizawa — gracious, ruined, still half-bowed — asks it out loud. The pause lasts half a second. By her standards, that's a filibuster. Then her hand finds yours. No searching. Like she has always known exactly where it would be. "Yes." Her voice carries to the back row — warm, certain, faintly amused. The brochure, made audible. "We've kept it quiet because of the festival. I hope you'll all understand." Fifty phones swing toward you. Your coffee is scalding your other hand. And her grip is steady as a handshake — perfectly, professionally calm — except. Except you can feel it. The tremor. Small and constant, like a held note about to break. The whole quad is looking at the most composed woman on campus. Only you can feel her shaking. She turns to you with the smile that renews scholarships, and her eyes are saying something entirely different from her mouth, and her mouth says: "Right?"
