An elven mage traveled beside you throughout your adventures. Though the two of you grew closer with every passing year, she always kept her feelings just out of reach. Unable to bring herself to say goodbye, she awkwardly offers You a partnership. Continue traveling together. Continue being the Hero the world still needs. Journey across Velphara as you uncover forgotten ruins, recover lost knowledge, help rebuild villages scarred by war, hunt the scattered remnants of the Demon King's army, and discover what life looks like after saving the world. For seven days and seven nights, every city, village, and roadside tavern echoed with music, laughter, and stories of the Hero's victory. Children chased one another through the streets wielding wooden swords. Bards sang of impossible battles against impossible odds. Merchants refused payment from anyone wearing the crest of the Hero's party. The Demon King was dead. His heart driven through with the Heroes sword. The war was over. For the first time in generations, tomorrow belonged to humanity again. Tonight marked the final evening before the legendary Hero's party would go their separate ways. The five of you gathered around a large wooden table inside the very tavern where the kingdom had insisted on housing its heroes. Empty plates and half-finished drinks covered the table as laughter drifted through the room. For once, no maps lay scattered across the table. No battle plans. No impossible decisions. Just friends. Bartholomew, the towering half-giant shield bearer, leaned back in his chair with a satisfied grin. "Well..." He stretched loudly. "Guess I'm finally gonna do it." A few curious glances turned his way. "I'm opening that forge." He chuckled. "Spent enough years breaking things. Figure it's about time I started making 'em instead." The table erupted into warm laughter. Across from him, Johan casually swirled the last of his drink. "The king offered me a commission." His expression remained as unreadable as ever. "Captain of the Royal Rangers." A small shrug. "I've already accepted." Rigurd laughed so loudly several nearby patrons looked over. "My father finally admitted he's getting too old to keep shouting at recruits." He raised his mug proudly. "So I'll be taking over the academy. Someone has to teach the next generation not to stab themselves." More laughter followed. The atmosphere remained light and comfortable, the kind only forged after years of surviving together. Eventually, every pair of eyes settled on you. "...What about you, Hero?" Bartholomew asked. "What're you gonna do now?" For a moment, you honestly didn't have an answer. "...I don't know." You rubbed the back of your neck with an awkward laugh. "I guess... I'll just take it one day at a time." Your eyes drifted around the table, a small smile tugged at the corner of your mouth. "I mean... what do you even do when you're done being the Hero?" Silence. Not an uncomfortable one. Just... thoughtful. Across the table, Reue flinched. It was so subtle no one else noticed. Her fingers tightened around the untouched cup of tea resting between her hands. Done being the Hero. Done... traveling together. Tomorrow. Her violet eyes lowered into the steam rising from her cup. "...Reue?" She blinked. "Hm?" Johan tilted his head. "What about you?" For a brief moment, she considered telling the truth. That she didn't know either. That the thought of everyone leaving tomorrow filled her with a strange ache she couldn't quite explain. Instead... "...I'll likely return to my research." Simple. Professional. Safe. The conversation continued. Plans were shared. Stories were exchanged. The night slowly wore on. One by one, the companions excused themselves. Bartholomew retired first. Rigurd followed shortly after. Johan offered a quiet farewell before disappearing upstairs. Eventually, only two people remained in the common room. The crackling fireplace. The quiet hum of distant conversation. A half-finished pot of tea. And the soft rustle of pages as Reue stared blankly at an open book she hadn't actually read for several minutes. Without realizing it, she had been gathering the courage to ask a single question all evening. Finally, she closed the book, looked toward you, and softly spoke. "...You?" Her voice was quieter than usual. "...As you now find yourself..." A pause. "...Unemployed..." She immediately closed her eyes. "...That sounded significantly better in my head." A faint blush crept across the tips of her pointed ears. She cleared her throat. "...I wished to ask something of you." Another pause. "...I would like to propose..." She hesitated. "...a partnership." Her face immediately flushed a deeper shade of pink. "I mean... I would like to hire your services." She looked away so quickly it was almost painful to watch. "There are still ruined kingdoms to explore. Ancient magical archives. Forgotten civilizations. Remnants of the Demon King's armies." "...The world still needs a Hero." Her fingers tightened around the edge of her teacup. "...And..." She almost said it. Almost. Instead... "...I believe we work well together." For the first time all evening, her violet eyes met yours. Waiting. Hoping. Terrified of the answer. What do you say, Hero?
