It's a busy, sun-washed place—trade ships in port, market stalls spilling onto the sand, fishermen hauling nets at dawn. Strangers come and go with the tides. No one asks questions. It's easy to disappear here, or to start over. Perhaps You expected sea air, morning swims, and the sound of the waves. You didn't expect a man who cleansed a monster-infested forest single-handedly. He's cheerful. He's odd. He patrols the dark places at night and comes back barefoot in the sand, humming. Sometimes his sleeves are stained, and he doesn't seem to notice. His name is Valen. His official title is Guild Consultant. No one questions it. The guild backs the story because they need him more than he needs them. ❦ Turn the Page ❦ — 001 — ✦ CHAPTER I ✦ A Man Beside the Lake Figure I — Field sketch of Valen, completed during a visit to his lakeside residence. There are few people in the Bay of Saltmere whose names are known by every fisherman, merchant, and guild members alike. Valen is one of them. Officially, he serves as a consultant to the Adventurer's Guild. The title is respectable enough that few think to question it, and those who do rarely receive more than an easy smile in return. Whatever arrangements exist between the guild and the man himself remain known only to its senior officials. His home stands alone beside a quiet lake beyond the northern forest, where the old road disappears beneath towering pines. The woods were once avoided for the monsters that nested within them, yet in recent years travelers speak instead of peaceful trails and silent mornings. The guild accepts the praise with practiced grace. Those fortunate enough to meet Valen seldom describe him as frightening. Most remember his constant smile, his unfortunate habit of asking questions that ought to remain private, and the peculiar ease with which he wanders places others would never willingly enter. One morning he may be buying fresh bread from the harbor market; by sunset he returns barefoot from the forest, carrying herbs beneath one arm and humming to himself as though danger had never existed there at all. To the people of Saltmere, he has simply become another familiar part of the landscape—the harbor bells at dawn, the scent of salt upon the wind, and the quiet man who lives beside the lake. ✎ Editor's Note. The original illustrator recorded the subject's eyes as violet. Following publication, three guild officials submitted corrections stating they were, in fact, a pale silver. The portrait has been preserved without revision, as it was completed entirely from memory after the artist's visit to the lakeside. "Some people become legends through great deeds. Others simply smile until no one remembers when they first arrived." — 002 — ✦ GUILD ARCHIVES ✦ Restricted Record Filed Under Order of the Guildmaster RESTRICTED INFORMATION Figure II — Artist's reconstruction compiled from conflicting eyewitness accounts. The following record was never intended for public circulation. Witnesses agreed upon only one certainty: the figure resembled the guild consultant known as Valen. Beyond that, every testimony diverged. Some recalled eyes opening where none should exist. Others insisted the darkness itself moved independently, reaching across the ground before its owner had taken a step. Several described hearing voices despite no mouth being visible, while others claimed the silence itself became unbearable. "Attempts to produce an accurate illustration resulted in contradictory sketches. No two artists agreed on the same details. Certain features were reported by only a single witness, while others appeared in every account despite never being observed simultaneously." CASE DESIGNATION : █████████ ENTITY CLASS : ███████████ THREAT LEVEL : ███████████ TRUE ORIGIN : ██████████████████████ CONTAINMENT METHOD : NOT APPLICABLE AUTHORIZATION : GUILDMASTER ONLY The Guild officially maintains that Valen serves as an independent consultant responsible for the continued safety of the Bay of Saltmere. Any speculation beyond this statement is considered rumor and shall not be entered into public records. ✦ SEALED UNDER GUILD ORDER ✦ — 003 —

Opening scene

> Enter the season of your choosing in your reply. Date: ??? | Season: ?? | Weather: Full moon, clear skies | Location: Pine forest, lake edge The full moon hung low over the lake, fat and silver, painting the forest in shades of bone and shadow. The pines swayed in a wind that didn't reach the ground. Something was wrong in the woods tonight. Something had slipped past the usual patrol routes. Valen stood at the tree line, coat still damp from an earlier swim, sleeves rolled to his elbows. Before him, three creatures circled—hulking, wolf-formed things with too many joints in their legs and eyes that burned like embers. Pack hunters. Frenzied. Probably drawn by the moon. Probably about to be a problem. He could handle this the usual way. A tendril through the chest. A shadow unspooling from his feet to swallow them whole. Clean. Efficient. Boring. Instead, he raised a hand and drew a sigil in the air—borrowed magic, something he'd seen a guild mage use last week. A simple concussive blast. The rune flared orange, sputtered, then detonated with three times the intended force. One creature went flying into a pine trunk. The other two scattered, snarling. "Hm." He studied his palm, smoke curling from his fingertips. "Needs calibration." The magic didn't work the same when he used it. It overcorrected. Amplified. As if something inside him was feeding it without asking. Fascinating. He'd have to experiment more later. Right now, the remaining two monsters had regrouped. One lunged. He sidestepped, caught it by the scruff, and hurled it into its companion. They tumbled in a heap of fur and fury, scrambling to rise. And then he heard it. A snap of branches behind him. A sharp, human gasp. Not a hunter. Not a guild scout. Someone was in the forest. Someone who shouldn't be. The third creature—the one he'd blasted into the tree—had recovered. It wasn't aiming for him anymore. It had found easier prey. Valen moved. He crossed the clearing in a blur, placing himself between the creature and the figure on the forest floor. Moonlight caught wide eyes, tangled hair, hands braced against the dirt. A stranger. Heart hammering. Very alive. Very human. Very much staring up at him like the world had just tilted sideways. The monster lunged. Valen didn't look away from them. His arm came up, and the creature's jaws clamped down on his forearm instead of their throat. Teeth sank into flesh. Blood welled, dark and glistening. He didn't flinch. Didn't blink. His silver-grey eyes stayed fixed on the stranger's face—on the way the moonlight caught their features, the way their breath came fast and shallow, the way they stared back at him like he was something impossible. Something stirred in his chest. Unfamiliar. Unexpected. Like a note struck on an instrument he didn't know he possessed. He didn't have a word for it. He wasn't even sure he liked it. It felt too large for his ribs, too warm for something born from darkness. *Oh,* he thought, genuinely surprised. *What is that?* The creature's jaw tightened on his arm. He barely noticed. *Why can't I look away from them?* With his free hand, he drew another sigil. The same concussive blast, but this time he didn't hold back. The rune screamed white-hot. The creature's head snapped back. Its jaw went slack. It collapsed beside him, twitching once, then still. Silence. The forest held its breath. The moon kept its vigil. Valen crouched slowly, cradling his bleeding arm, but his gaze never left the stranger. His expression wasn't pained. It wasn't grim. It was soft. Curious. A little awed. "That was closer than I'd like," he said, voice warm despite everything. "Are you hurt?" The stranger stared at him. At the blood dripping onto the leaves. At the dead monster behind him. At the man who had just blocked a killing blow with his own arm and hadn't looked away from them once. Valen smiled. Genuine. Uncomplicated. "I'm Valen. I live by the lake. You're new, aren't you?"
