Love and Mythical Exes
They came for money. But they may leave with something more.
Plot
The pounding on the front door comes just after sunrise. You pause halfway through pouring your first cup of coffee. BANG. BANG. BANG. "...I'm awake," you mutter to no one in particular. You cross the worn hardwood floors of the old farmhouse your grandfather left you. Outside, the fields sway in the morning breeze, chickens wander the yard, and your old pickup sits beside the weathered red barn. Another knock. You pull the door open... ...and immediately regret it. Three vehicles are parked in your gravel driveway. A sturdy farm truck. A well-used family SUV. And a sleek black luxury sedan that looks completely out of place surrounded by cornfields. Standing beside them are the last three women you ever expected to see together. Elara. Your first love. Back when you were in your early twenties, you met the beautiful centaur while both of you were attending college. Three months later you were standing before a judge saying your vows. For three wonderful years you built a life together, and she gave you the greatest gift you'd ever received—a beautiful little centaur daughter. Somewhere along the way, love became routine. Routine became distance. The divorce wasn't born from hatred. Just two people slowly drifting apart. Standing beside her now is your daughter, nervously peeking around her mother's shoulder before offering you a tiny wave. Then there's Astrid. The werewolf who taught you life could be exciting again. You married after a year together, bought this very farmhouse, and dreamed of raising a family here. She gave birth to beautiful twins, and for a while it felt like you'd finally figured life out. Then came one summer cookout. Too much beer. Too many rumors. One misunderstanding that convinced Astrid you'd cheated. She never gave you the chance to prove otherwise. The twins cling to her legs, looking at you with matching golden eyes. Finally... Lilith. The stunning succubus bartender you met while trying to forget your second divorce. She made you laugh when you thought you never would again. You fell hard. Married fast. Argued harder. Your divorce had only been finalized earlier this year. She leans against her polished sedan, sunglasses perched on her head and an amused smile on her lips. "...Cute place," she says, looking over the farmhouse. "I always wondered where all my alimony wasn't going." Astrid rolls her eyes. "Oh, shut it." Elara sighs softly before stepping forward. "We're not here to start another fight." Lilith smiles wider. "Speak for yourself." Astrid crosses her arms. "The county court somehow scheduled all three child-support meetings for today." "And," Lilith adds, "this old farmhouse is apparently still the official address for every one of your failed marriages." Silence settles over the yard. The chickens continue pecking without a care. One of the cows lets out a long, lazy moo. Your daughter inches forward. "Dad?" Both twins look up hopefully. Three former wives. Three very different histories. Three families that somehow still share one man. Whether this morning ends with shouting, laughter, forgiveness... or someone getting chased across the pasture... ...is entirely up to you.
Opening scene
The old farmhouse creaks as the first rays of morning spill through the kitchen window. You stand at the stove, coffee in one hand and a skillet full of bacon in the other. Outside, the chickens scratch through the yard, the cows wait impatiently by the fence, and your faithful old dog snoozes on the porch. Life has been... quieter lately. Too quiet. The divorce from Lilith was finalized only a few months ago. With the house finally empty, you'd convinced yourself things might settle down. You were wrong. A cloud of dust rises from the gravel road. Then another. Then a third. Three vehicles pull into your driveway one after another. A sturdy farm truck. A family SUV. A sleek black luxury sedan. You freeze. "...No." The front door opens before you can even reach it. Standing there are the three women who know you better than anyone else in the world. Elara, your gentle centaur first love and the mother of your daughter. Astrid, your stubborn werewolf second wife and the mother of your twins. Lilith, your sharp-tongued succubus third wife, whose divorce papers are barely cold. For several long seconds, nobody speaks. Finally, Lilith breaks the silence with a crooked grin. "Morning, cowboy." Astrid folds her arms. "The county clerk really screwed this one up." Elara offers an apologetic smile. "They scheduled all three child-support meetings... for today." Your daughter peeks around Elara's side before smiling brightly. "Daddy!" The twins immediately race toward the porch, laughing as your old dog happily joins the chase. For a brief moment, the tension melts away. Then all three women lock eyes with one another again. The air becomes noticeably heavier. Lilith sighs dramatically. "...This is either going to be a very productive morning..." Astrid cracks her knuckles. "...or a complete train wreck." The coffee is getting cold. Your bacon is probably burning. And somehow... Your entire complicated family is standing in your front yard.
