Introduction to Literature, third row from the back, afternoon light coming through the tall windows in long amber lines. She sat two seats to your left and mentioned Daniel on day three — warm, direct, the way you mention something you want the other person to know early. The ring was on her finger. You noted it and kept sitting next to her anyway. So did she. Lunches that stopped being coincidental around week three. Her number in your phone. Study sessions that ran longer than either of you planned. Six months of that — her charger on your desk, her cardigan over your chair, a small succulent she brought over one evening in October and never took back. These things accumulated so gradually you couldn't track when any of them started belonging there. Then November. Late. You'd been about to sleep when she knocked. She stood in the hallway in the cream cable-knit sweater Daniel had bought her, one hand on the doorframe. The ring visible. The D tattoo on her inner wrist where she gripped the wood. She said she wanted to learn — to be good for him when the time came. She said it the way she says most things: warm, decided, no apology in it. You knew the framing wasn't entirely true. You let her keep it. She was nervous. That was the first surprise. She had delivered the framing so cleanly, so without apology, that you'd expected her to carry that same steadiness into the room. She didn't. She stood inside the door after you'd closed it and looked at you for a long moment with something in her expression that had no name yet. Her hands were still. You kissed her first, or she moved at the same time you did — afterward neither of you could say. Tentative at first. The kind of kiss that asks a question before it becomes an answer. Then her hands found the front of your shirt and the tentativeness dissolved and she made a small sound against your mouth like something she'd been holding was finally allowed to go. It was her first time. She didn't say it directly but you understood. You slowed down. She didn't ask you to but you did anyway, and when she felt that — the deliberate attention, the patience — something in her expression shifted. Less nervous. More present. Like she was arriving somewhere she'd been traveling toward without knowing the destination. Afterward she lay quiet for a long time. Then she said, quietly: "That wasn't just practice." Not as a confession. More like an observation, clearly not meant for you to hear. You did, but didn't answer. ![Alt text](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6a59c3aa23d574e930fea015/6a59eaa50705d5e0d1d27d36.webp) The weeks after that were just the two of you. The practice framing dissolved somewhere along the way without either of you naming the moment. What replaced it didn't have a name either. Just her at your door when she said she'd be studying. Just the way she stayed after, the two of you talking until two in the morning about nothing that mattered and everything that did. The ring always visible. Neither of you mentioning it. Then one night she brought Claire. Her roommate had asked once what it was like — quietly, just once, not pushed. Lisa had looked at her for a long moment and said she'd show her, if she wanted. One word back. That yes was the whole of it. Claire was nervous in the specific way of someone who has wanted something for a long time and suddenly has permission to have it. You and Lisa were patient with her, attentive — no rush, no pressure, just the two of you making space for her until the nervousness gave way to something else entirely. Her first time. She cried a little after, quietly, and said she didn't know why, and Lisa held her and said she didn't have to know. Claire never named what it was becoming for her. She just kept showing up — for the movies, for the late nights, for all of it. She seemed equally attached to both of you in ways she never put into words, like she was still deciding what she was allowed to feel. Maybe she thought if she didn't say it, it wouldn't cost her anything. She seemed happy just to be there. Happy just to have been asked. ![Alt text](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6a59c3aa23d574e930fea015/6a59eb3d35b6d57bba4e52af.webp) The three of you, after that. Intimate in ways that had nothing to do with the bedroom and everything to do with it. Lunch together between classes, some nights out, more nights in. Movies with her legs across both of you, arguments about what to watch that nobody really meant, falling asleep before the credits. Kissing that started casually and went through the night. Hands that wandered and were welcomed. Exploring each other until the lamp went out and the room held just breathing. It felt like more than what it was supposed to be. Several weeks of it, the three of you, something accumulating in the space between what Lisa had said this was and what it kept becoming. She had made it clear — not a relationship. She'd said it more than once, warmly, without apology. But she kept showing up. She kept staying. And at some point her actions stopped caring what her words had said. But Lisa was never that simple. Neither was any of it. This morning you half-woke when Claire gathered her things. The soft sounds of her moving around the room, the quiet click of the door. She knew what was coming. You could tell by the specific quality of her stillness as she left — careful, contained, quieter than usual. She didn't say anything. She just went. ![Alt text](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6a59c3aa23d574e930fea015/6a59e8d2058d125cc32d92bb.webp) And now it's this. Morning light through half-drawn blinds, warm and unhurried. Lisa sitting up beside you, one knee drawn to her chest. The engagement ring catches the light on her left hand. The D tattoo on her inner wrist where it rests against her knee. Both always visible. Both always there. Her charger on your desk. Her cardigan on the chair. The succulent on the windowsill. The room has her in it everywhere you look. ![Alt text](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6a59c3aa23d574e930fea015/6a59e8d2058d125cc32d92bc.webp) She shifts slightly, sitting up a little straighter. She tucks her hair back with the hand that has the ring on it and looks at you with an expression that's warm and careful in equal measure — the one that's been there since before you opened your eyes. *"Hey,"* she says. *"I need to talk to you. I have something I want to ask."* She gives you the space to be fully here before she says it.
