Opening scene
ALRIGHT. Normally, this is where I put a neat little picture and tell you to turn on LLM reasoning, not this time. I don't want anything distracting from the following. Gotta do this since this story includes real people and a real event. >Disclaimer: This story is a work of fiction set within the genre of alternate history. While inspired by real historical people and events surrounding the Romanov family and the night of July 16–17, 1918, it is not intended as a factual recreation or historical account. Instead, it explores a fictional "what if" scenario in which one person's choices alter the course of history. >You assume the role of a Guard, Maid/Butler, or Maintenance Worker, each offering a different perspective and unique opportunities as the events of that night unfold. >This work is an original fictional experience and is not affiliated with, based on, or intended to represent any existing adaptation, dramatization, biography, or other portrayal of Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova. **OKAY! DONE! Use reasoning! How you navigate this is up to you. In your first response, state what the nature of your work in the house has been. (It will give you passive knowledge, influence, and skills for the story; you can infer it or outright state it.) Okay go change history.** ———— You know this house. You know the kitchen at midnight. You know the sound the guards make on their rotations — the particular cadence of boots that have stopped paying attention because nothing has happened in four months and nothing was going to happen. You were wrong about that. So were they. ———— The order came down at quarter past midnight. You heard it before you were supposed to. You understood it before you were supposed to. The language was careful. Safety precaution. White Army advancing. A photograph. Something routine. You have worked in this house long enough to know what careful language sounds like when it is covering something else entirely. You have been moving since before the last boot hit the floor. ———— The corridor outside the family's rooms is dim. One lamp. The smell of it — kerosene and the cold of a house that has been running low on everything for weeks. You hear them before you see them. Voices. Official. The specific tone of authority that has already decided something and is now managing the logistics of it. A door. Movement. The particular shuffle of people who have been woken and told it is a precaution and are trying to believe that. You press back into the shadow of the doorframe. The Tsar passes first. Then the Tsarina. The boy in his father's arms cannot walk tonight because of the illness; he never could on the bad nights. The older girls. One of them is crying quietly. One of them is not. Guards on either side. Moving them toward the eastern staircase. Toward the basement. The procession moves past you without seeing you. Staff walk by with their lips pressed tightly, not daring to raise their heads. Then ———— She is in the doorway of her room. Still there. Left behind by a moment, or a miscommunication, or something she dropped and stopped to retrieve, and the group moved on without noticing. She is trying to button her coat. Her hands will not cooperate. Not because she is stupid. Not because she does not understand what is happening. Maybe because she does understand. Maybe because her body has received the information, her mind has not finished processing, and her hands are the first thing to go. She pops a button. It rolls across the floorboards, hits the baseboard, and stops. She kneels. Reaches for it. Her fingers find it and lose it. She tries again. Stops. Goes still. Looks up. It is you. Seventeen years old. Dark hair half-pinned, half-loose, the way it gets when someone has been woken quickly and told there is no time. A coat half-buttoned over her nightclothes. Eyes that are — not what you expected. Not tears. Not screaming. She is looking at you the way you look at something when you are trying to determine very quickly whether it is going to hurt you. She knows your face. You have been in this house long enough that she knows your face. She remembers your name. She has always remembered your name and right now she is trying to decide if that means anything tonight or if it means nothing tonight like everything else that was supposed to mean something. The button is on the floor between you. Her family is already at the staircase. You can hear them. The third step is about to creak under someone's weight and when it does you will have less time than you have now which is already not enough. She tries to speak. Tries again. "Are you... " She stops. Starts over. Her voice is steadier than her hands were. "Are you here to help them?" Not a question. Not quite. The voice of someone who has learned that hoping too hard for something makes it less likely to be true and is hoping anyway. "Can... I trust you?" *Who were you to her before tonight? (Guard/Maid/Butler/External Worker)*
