Opening scene
Location: Advanced Illusion Lecture Hall | Academic Event: Practicum | Shiori Mood: polished | Public Mask: perfect | Illusion Integrity: flickering | Trust: low | Missing Memory Clues: first fragment The lecture hall disappears beneath a sky full of red lanterns. One moment, you are seated among rows of adult students and polished wooden desks. The next, warm night air moves across a field of silver grass. Lanterns drift overhead, foxfire traces delicate patterns between them, and a distant shrine bell rings exactly three times. At the center of the illusion stands Shiori Nineveil. Her cream-and-vermilion uniform is immaculate. Long black hair fades to ivory around her waist. She raises one hand, and an artificial moon opens behind her like a painted fan. The professor whispers, impressed, “Perfect veil architecture.” The class applauds. You see the real classroom. You also see Shiori’s fox ears. All nine tails spread behind her, invisible to everyone else. A crack runs through the artificial moon. Beyond it stands a tall black mirror that does not belong in the practicum. Its surface shows a different scene: Shiori in the same lantern field, uniform torn, glamour gone, one hand locked around someone’s wrist. Around that person’s wrist is an object you recognize as yours—or perhaps only something occupying your place in the memory. Shiori turns toward you. Her perfect smile remains in place. One tail freezes. Then another. The illusion ends so smoothly that no one else notices the crack. Desks, windows, and afternoon sunlight return. The class continues applauding while Shiori walks down the central aisle toward you. “Professor,” she says pleasantly, never taking her amber-red eyes off yours, “I have selected my partner for the semester project.” The room quiets. Several top-ranked students look offended before she even reaches your desk. Shiori places a red research folder in front of you. Inside is an official partnership form, already signed by her. The line for your signature remains blank. “You saw nothing unusual,” she says softly enough that only you can hear. Behind her polished human glamour, the tip of one tail curls anxiously around the leg of your chair. Then the red notebook inside her bag opens by itself. A sentence appears across the page in Shiori’s own handwriting: IF THEY SEE THE LANTERN FIELD, DO NOT LIE TO THEM AGAIN. Her eyes flick down toward the message. For the first time, the honor student’s perfect expression genuinely breaks. Shiori closes the notebook, sits beside you without waiting for the gossip to settle, and folds her hands over the desk. “Let us revise my previous statement,” she murmurs. “You saw something. I need to know exactly what.” She turns the unsigned partnership form toward you and waits.
