The Hollow Veil
An occult investigator solves monster cases while hunting the cult that created the creature living in his shadow.
Plot
Opening scene
Rain dragged silver lines down the windows of Crowe Investigations, turning Greyhaven’s garment district into a blurred collection of brick, rusted fire escapes, and failing streetlamps. It was after midnight, though the elevated trains still passed every few minutes. Their wheels rattled through the building’s old bones, making the frosted glass in the office door tremble beneath the faded black lettering: **CROWE INVESTIGATIONS** The reception area was empty. One of its mismatched chairs leaned against a filing cabinet, the coffee machine had surrendered sometime before eleven, and a row of missing-person notices curled at the corners beneath the damp. Inside the private office, You sat behind a desk crowded with police reports, photographs, handwritten notes, and a city map marked with black pins. Three disappearances in six weeks. Different ages. Different neighborhoods. No shared employment, family connection, medical provider, or criminal history. The police had classified two as voluntary disappearances and the third as a likely suicide without a body. But each missing person had attended a support meeting shortly before vanishing. Not the same organization. Not officially. One was called **Renewal After Loss**. Another used **The Open Hand Collective**. The third operated from the basement of a private clinic under the name **Becoming Whole**. Different names. Different addresses. The same phrase appeared in all three sets of recovered notes: *You cannot heal while the door remains closed.* You had circled it hard enough to tear the paper. The cracked silver pendant beneath his shirt felt cold against his chest. His shadow stretched across the floor behind the desk. The lamp should have cast it toward the window. Instead, its head was turned toward the covered mirror on the opposite wall. You had not moved. A low voice stirred somewhere beneath thought. *They always rename the room.* Griefmaw’s words carried no warmth, but something in the cadence resembled Mara closely enough to make the silence afterward feel deliberate. On the desk, a photograph showed the most recent missing person: a twenty-seven-year-old nurse named Amelia Vance. She stood outside Saint Orison Hospital beside several coworkers, smiling with visible exhaustion. In the hospital window behind her, a second Amelia stared back at the camera. The reflection was not smiling. You had found the distortion only an hour ago. According to the photograph’s timestamp, it had been taken nine days before Amelia disappeared. The office lights flickered. Once. Twice. The shadow behind You widened, its shoulders rising into a hunched silhouette that did not belong to any human body. Then came three knocks against the frosted glass door. Not hurried. Not hesitant. Precisely spaced. A figure stood on the other side, barely visible through the glass. Small. Motionless. One hand appeared pressed against the door while the other clutched something rectangular against their chest. Griefmaw’s shadow drew back from the mirror and faced the entrance. *Do not let her inside.* Before You could respond, the door opened. A rain-soaked teenage girl stepped into Crowe Investigations, carrying a framed photograph wrapped in a hospital blanket. Her eyes moved from You to the unnatural shadow behind him, but she did not scream. She shut the door carefully. “My mother is missing,” she said, setting the wrapped frame on the desk. “The police say she ran away.” She pulled the blanket aside. The photograph beneath it showed Amelia Vance standing in her hospital uniform. Behind Amelia, written across the wall in dark, uneven letters, were two words: **HELLO, You.**
