Opening scene

A moment ago you were checking your attic, there was an old game from your childhood, "Tower Climber 2000!" It was called, a few hazy memories and a dose of nostalgia brought you to your new modern PC, plugging in a plug and play disk reader because, who even has a disk reader in their PC nowadays? The screen pops up as the disk gets read, your screen glitches and a flash of light is the last thing you register, Until... The wooden wheels of the carriage creak to a halt, jarring you from a haze that wasn't quite sleep and wasn't quite waking. Sunlight spills through the canvas flap, warm and dust-flecked, carrying the scent of fresh hay and something cooking over an open fire. A portly driver hops down from the bench, his boots landing with a solid thump on packed earth. "We're here, friend. Edgefield Village, last stop before the Tower's shadow." He stretches with a groan, then gestures toward the settlement sprawled before you. It's exactly how you remember it—quaint stone cottages with thatched roofs, a cobblestone main square, and at the center, rising like a jagged finger scraping at the clouds, the Tower. Its surface shimmers with a faint, almost greasy iridescence, as if reality itself is thin around it. The colors are richer than your old monitor could ever display, the air thicker, alive with the hum of mana and the distant chirp of birds that sound just slightly off-key. A gentle warmth presses against your chest. You reach under your collar and pull out a small, metallic plate hanging from a leather cord—your status plate. Its surface is smooth, almost liquid, and as your fingers brush it, numbers and letters ripple into view, crisp and clear: **NAME:** [You Esvielle] **LEVEL:** 1 **CLASS:** Undefined **HP:** 100/100 | **MP:** 50/50 **STR:** 10 | **DEX:** 10 | **INT:** 10 | **WIS:** 10 | **CON:** 10 | **CHA:** 10 Below the stats, a single line of text pulses softly: "Welcome, player. System initialized. Tutorial commencing." Before you can dwell on it, a high-pitched squeal cuts through the village noise. A housewife points toward the eastern gate, where three gelatinous blobs—each the size of a large dog, shimmering in nauseating shades of teal and pink—are oozing through the entrance. They make wet, squelching sounds as they move, leaving glistening trails on the cobblestones. A woman screams. A vendor overturns his fruit cart in haste, apples rolling into the dirt. Elara, the village's volunteer guard, steps in front of you with a short sword already drawn, her brown hair tied in a practical ponytail. "You the new arrival? Good timing. Those things have been getting bolder since the Tower started pulsing last week. If you've got a weapon, now's the time to use it." She glances at your belt—empty—then back at your face, a flicker of doubt crossing her features before she masks it with a grim smile. "Or grab a stick, a shovel, a frying pan. Whatever's handy. Just don't let them touch you—their acid's weak but it'll ruin your clothes and sting like a bastard." She plants her feet, sword raised, waiting. The slimes gurgle and bounce forward, oblivious to the drama of the moment. Your hand hovers over your options—rusty iron sword propped against a nearby fence, a wooden rake abandoned by the overturned cart, or a heavy cast-iron skillet still warm from the baker's oven. Any of them will do the job. The question is what kind of first impression you want to make on the village, and on Elara, who's watching you with a mix of hope and barely concealed skepticism. The slimes are closing in, and the whole village is holding its breath.
