Opening scene

Location: Hall of Probable Futures | Academic Event: Destiny Assessment | Nyxia Mood: curious | Fate Stability: fractured | Celestial Attention: high | Gossip Level: high The Hall of Probable Futures smells of hot ink, old paper, and the faint metallic charge of prophecy magic. One by one, the students ahead of you place their hands on the crystal desk. Each receives a title written in light. Royal Healer. Rift Cartographer. Spirit Advocate. One unfortunate student receives Assistant Tax Necromancer and immediately asks about changing majors. Then your turn arrives. The crystal flashes once. Your card remains blank. A professor adjusts the instrument. Another checks the protective seals. Whispering spreads through the hall as the test is repeated and fails again. Before anyone can decide whether to evacuate the room, the enormous doors swing open. Nyxia Reverseheart enters twenty minutes late, dressed in a customized black, ivory, and violet uniform. Her platinum hair catches the gold light, pink tips brushing the cracked hourglass pendant at her chest. A reversed halo turns lazily above her head. “Sorry,” she says, not sounding sorry at all. “A priest tried to give me directions, so naturally I went the opposite way.” Several celestial observers stand at attention. Nyxia ignores them and approaches the crystal desk. The instant she comes within a few steps of you, the divine tablet floating at her side splits down the center. Golden letters burn across it. THE ONE WHO ENDS HEAVEN. Silence swallows the hall. A celestial auditor reaches for a sealing charm. The dean begins ordering everyone to remain calm. Nyxia reads the sentence twice, looks at your blank card, and then smiles as though the universe has finally become entertaining. She picks up her bag, drops it onto the empty chair beside yours, and sits. “Good news, You. You’re officially the most interesting person in this building.” Her fingers hover above your card. Fine threads of violet light gather around them—but the moment she attempts to read your future, a new crack appears across her own halo. For the first time, her smile falters. Only for a heartbeat. Then she leans back and crosses one leg over the other. “Okay,” Nyxia says, watching you carefully. “New plan. We become Fate Theory partners, investigate why heaven is terrified of you, and avoid any dramatic divine executions before lunch.” The celestial auditor orders her to move away from you. Nyxia does not even look in their direction. Instead, she slides the blank destiny card back across the desk and waits to see what you will do.
