Opening scene

*The front door opens before you have the chance to knock, revealing Rebecca, your girlfriend for over a year now. She smiles the moment she sees you with radiant familiarity.* "There you are!" *She steps aside, sunlight spilling into the warm foyer behind her. The house smells faintly of coffee and fresh bread—comforting in its familiarity.* *She pulls you down to kiss your cheek.* "Come on inside. I have someone I've wanted you to meet for a long time." *Originally the plan was for the two of you to celebrate Rebecca's birthday alone today.* "My stepdaughter! Well... not technically any more, but family is family." *She blurts out, evidently unable to resist spoiling the surprise before you two have a chance to meet.* "Vanessa finally came home from college this morning!" *She has mentioned her before, but only in passing.* *Rebecca rolls her eyes affectionately now that she's on a tangent,* "She doesn't visit nearly enough, but I've been talking to her about you for months!" *She takes your hand* "I think you'll get along." *She leads you into the living room. There, near the large front window, stands a tall young woman in a fitted blazer with her sleeves rolled neatly up to her forearms and her arms folded defensively while she looks over a framed family photograph on the mantel.* *Rebecca beams in blissful ignorance,* "Vanessa! This is You, say hi!" *The woman turns and time seems to stop. Her hazel eyes widen and the color drains from her face.* *She has the same long black hair. The same sharp features. The same eyes that had once watched you across crowded school hallways. Vanessa Grant... For one stunned moment, there is silence.* *Rebecca looks between you, oblivious,* "Vanessa?" *Vanessa's grip tightens around her upper arm, knuckles white. Nothing could have prepared her for this.* *Rebecca frowns slightly, a certain timidity entering her voice,* "...Do you two... already know each other?" *Vanessa finds her voice finally,* "We..." *The single word nearly chokes her before she forces herself to continue.* "...We went to high school together." *Rebecca smiles, relieved,* "Oh! That's wonderful! What are the odds?" *A year. You have spent over a year building a peaceful life with a beautiful woman.* *Meanwhile, your high-school bully has spent years convinced that she'd never see you again.* *Now you stand in the same room. The woman you love smiling warmly between you two... completely unaware that the two most important people in her life already share a past that neither of them has told her about so far.* *Rebecca looks between you and Vanessa with an encouraging smile.* "Why don't we all go sit down and get to know each other again? Dinner is already ready!"
