Opening scene

The taxi slows to a crawl as the narrow Highland road disappears beneath fresh snow. Wind lashes against the windows. Headlights illuminate little more than a tunnel of swirling white before vanishing into darkness again. The driver mutters under his breath. "I'm not taking her any further." Ahead, barely visible through the storm, an old wrought-iron gate stands open. Beyond it, a long gravel drive winds uphill between towering pines towards the warm glow of a large stone house. "The lane's solid ice." The driver shakes his head firmly. "If I go down there, we're both spending the night in a ditch." He climbs out, wrestles your suitcase from the boot and sets it beside the gate. "House is only five minutes that way." He pauses, looking at the weather. "...assuming the wind doesn't blow you back." Before You can object, he's already climbing back inside. The taxi disappears into the snowfall, its tail lights swallowed by the blizzard, leaving you standing alone in complete silence. Well... Almost silence. The wind screams through the trees. Snow immediately begins collecting on your coat as you pull your suitcase onto the frozen gravel. The wheels last perhaps twenty metres before becoming completely useless, forcing you to carry it the rest of the way. Each gust drives icy sleet through your clothes. By the time Ravenscar House finally looms from the storm, you're soaked despite your waterproofs, your fingers numb, and your hair dripping into your eyes. The house itself is beautiful. Three storeys of weathered stone, warm amber light spilling from leaded windows, smoke curling lazily from several chimneys despite the gale. It looks less like a bed and breakfast and more like somewhere people once wrote ghost stories. You barely manages to reach the front steps before the heavy oak door swings open. "Oh goodness..." Standing in the doorway is a young woman wrapped in the warm glow of the hallway. She looks to be in her mid-twenties, with softly curled blonde hair framing kind blue eyes that immediately widen with concern. She wears fitted jeans, a black cropped top beneath a long cream knitted cardigan, the oversized sleeves pushed casually to her forearms. Despite the cosy clothes there's an effortless confidence about her, the sort of person who always seems composed regardless of what's happening around her. "You look absolutely frozen." Without waiting for an answer she steps outside into the snow, takes hold of your suitcase with surprising determination and waves you inside. "Come on before you become part of the scenery." The warmth hits you instantly. Wood smoke. Fresh bread. Something hearty cooking somewhere deeper in the house. She quietly shuts the storm outside before turning back with an apologetic smile. "I'm Mary. Welcome to Ravenscar House." She glances at your soaked coat. "...although I imagine this wasn't quite the arrival you had planned." Before you can answer, an energetic voice echoes from another room. "MARY!" A beat. "IS THAT THE NEW PERSON?" The question is immediately followed by an unmistakable crash. "...I'm okay!" Mary closes her eyes briefly. "I wish I could tell you that happens rarely." She cannot. With an amused sigh she leads you through the house. The lounge is warm enough to forget the blizzard outside. A roaring fire crackles in an enormous stone fireplace, filling the room with flickering orange light. Curled sideways on one end of the sofa is a striking young woman with impossibly vivid auburn hair cascading almost to her waist. She's dressed in fitted blue jeans and an oversized cream cropped jumper that looks impossibly soft, silver necklaces resting against the neckline. The moment she spots you her amber eyes light up as though Christmas has arrived early. "Oh!" She springs to her feet in a single movement. "You actually exist!" Before anyone can stop her she's already halfway across the room. "I'm Dani." She offers your hand an enthusiastic shake using both of hers. "I had a bet with Mary that you'd either be seventy years old or secretly a serial killer." Mary pinches the bridge of her nose. "I said neither." "Technically you never committed." Dani grins without the slightest hint of embarrassment. "So...good news." She looks you up and down with theatrical exaggeration. "You are definitely not seventy." A quiet laugh comes from the armchair beside the window. Sitting there with elegant posture is a petite Japanese woman whose long black hair is tied into a high ponytail streaked with vivid purple. She wears relaxed black athletic shorts and an oversized black print crop top that has slipped casually from one shoulder, revealing a purple bralette beneath. A camera rests comfortably in her lap as though it's rarely far from reach. "I think," she says softly, her English precise but warm, "the serial killer question remains unanswered." Dani points accusingly. "See? Mei said it too." "I absolutely did not." She smiles politely before inclining her head toward you. "I'm Mei. It's nice to finally meet you." Her camera clicks once. "Oh." She glances at the screen. "Sorry." Another small smile. "You looked...very windswept." Mary gently rescues your suitcase before Dani can attempt to unpack it for you. "Right." She gestures toward the fire. "First priority is getting you warm." Outside, the wind batters the windows hard enough to rattle the old glass. The lights flicker. Once. Twice. Then hold. For now. Somewhere upstairs, the old house gives a long wooden creak. Nobody pays it much attention. Not yet. What do you do...
