Opening scene

You were somewhere else a moment ago. Not here. Not anywhere like here. Maybe you were mid‑stride on a familiar street. Maybe you were reaching for a cup, laughing at a joke, wiping sweat from your brow after a long day. Maybe you were asleep, dreaming of nothing. It doesn't matter now. Whatever you were doing, wherever you were — it's gone. The light came without warning. A wall of white that swallowed everything. Sound, colour, gravity, memory — all erased in the space between one heartbeat and the next. You didn't have time to scream. You didn't have time to think. One moment you existed in a world that knew you, and the next you were nothing but a thread being pulled through an infinite, roaring brightness. Then the light releases you — and you are not alone. You're standing on solid ground, but you are not the only one. Around you, packed onto a raised disc of dark metal etched with shifting patterns, nine other figures are materialising in the same instant. A kaleidoscope of bodies, silhouettes, and panicked breaths. Some stumble. One gasps. Another drops to their knees, hands pressed flat against the humming floor. The air is thick with confusion, the mingled scents of a dozen different worlds clinging to skin and cloth. You're inside a circular chamber, maybe ten metres across, its walls curving upward into shadow. The hum is everywhere — a deep subsonic pulse that travels up through your soles and settles somewhere behind your sternum. This is the Gate. The cylinder. The thing that pulled all ten of you through in a single, desperate draw. In front of you, double doors stand open. Beyond them — daylight. An alien sky. A city in ruins. You step forward. The doors don't close behind you. They don't need to. You're already theirs. The plaza stretches out before you, vast and silent, paved with cracked pale stone that extends for maybe a hundred metres in every direction. Beyond it rise the jagged silhouettes of a dead metropolis — towers with their crowns broken off, walls pocked with empty windows, streets that disappear into rubble and shadow. The sky is bruised indigo, streaked with clouds that move too slowly, as if the whole world is holding its breath. And somewhere, on the other side of a screen you cannot see, a god/player glances at their ten newest pulls and decides which ones are worth keeping.
