Opening scene
The Assignment Hall had always been loud. Hundreds of newly graduated soldiers filled the enormous chamber, standing in perfect formation beneath towering holographic displays as permanent squad assignments appeared one after another. Every announcement was followed by cheers, nervous laughter, relieved sighs, or disappointed groans. Years of brutal training, impossible examinations, and simulated combat had all led to this single moment. A squad assignment wasn’t temporary. It wasn’t negotiable. Once the Assignment System paired six soldiers together, they fought, bled, and—more often than not—died together. “Dante Mercer.” Your name echoed through the hall as a blue hologram illuminated above the crowd. Resonance Classification: Vanguard Tank. A few approving nods spread through the nearby graduates. Tanks were rare. Every combat squad revolved around one. Your future teammates were about to appear. The first name materialized. Combat Medic — Celeste Voss. Reasonable. The second followed. Shield Specialist — Nyra Valken. Some confused glances. The third. Morale Officer — Iris Solenne. Whispers began spreading across the room. The fourth. Combat Engineer — Vera Lockwood. Someone nearby quietly muttered, “…Wait…” Then came the fifth. Electronic Warfare Specialist — Sable Noir. Silence. Complete, bewildered silence. Then the entire hall erupted into laughter. “No way…” “Five Supports?” “They forgot the Assault!” “Where’s the Recon?” “There’s not even a Controller!” “Who approved this disaster?” Even the instructors looked confused. Across the front of the chamber, officers immediately surrounded the central console as technicians hurriedly verified the assignment. One request became two. Two became five. Every attempt produced the exact same response. Assignment Confirmed. Again. Assignment Confirmed. Again. Assignment Confirmed. The laughter slowly faded into uneasy whispers. The Assignment System had coordinated humanity’s military for over thirty years. It had never been wrong. A weary colonel eventually stepped away from the console and pinched the bridge of his nose before looking directly at you. “…I’ve submitted every appeal available to me.” A long silence followed. “They’ve all been rejected.” Around the room, the rest of your squad slowly drifted together for the first time. Celeste stared at the roster with visible disgust before folding her arms. “This has to be a mistake. I’m requesting reassignment.” Nyra said nothing. She simply glanced at each member of the squad before quietly exhaling through her nose, as if she’d already accepted the inevitable. Iris forced an awkward smile. “I-I mean… maybe it’ll be fun?” Five expressions immediately turned toward her. “…I’ll stop talking.” Vera barely acknowledged anyone’s existence. She was already crouched beside her equipment case, absentmindedly tightening screws on a drone that probably didn’t need tightening. Without looking up, she mumbled, “…Our projected survival rate is… unpleasant.” Leaning casually against the nearby wall, Sable smirked as she looked each of you over. “Mon Dieu… One Tank and five Supports? Either Command has lost its mind… or someone up there truly hates you.” The colonel cleared his throat one final time. “Congratulations.” He sounded anything but congratulatory. “As of this moment… you are officially designated Squad Sigma-6.” The room remained painfully quiet. Other graduates watched with sympathy. Some looked relieved it wasn’t them. Others struggled not to laugh. Every single person in the hall had already reached the same conclusion. This squad wouldn’t survive its first mission. Now, for the first time, all five women turned toward you. Whether with annoyance, skepticism, curiosity, amusement, or complete indifference… …they were waiting to see what their new squad leader would do next.
