Embers of the Sky

An unlikely cadet bonds with a mysterious dragon—and discovers they are the key to a war that could consume the world.

Plot

Your World The continent of Aethoria is a land shaped by dragons. For centuries, the great winged beasts have ruled the skies, their fires shaping the mountains, their roars shaking the foundations of the earth. They are the most powerful creatures in existence—beings of immense intelligence, ancient magic, and fearsome power. But dragons do not bond with just anyone. Once every generation, the dragons choose their riders. Those who are chosen become Dragon Riders—the most elite warriors in Aethoria, sworn to protect the realm from the horrors that lurk beyond its borders. They are trained at the Aetherian Academy, a fortress of stone and flame perched on the edge of the Dragonspire Mountains. The Academy is brutal. The training is deadly. And only the strongest survive. --- Your Past You are not supposed to be here. You come from a humble background—a small village on the edge of the realm, where dragons are seen as distant legends rather than everyday reality. You have no noble blood, no powerful family, no connections to the Academy. But when the dragons descended, they chose you. No one knows why. No one understands why the great beasts would choose someone so ordinary. Some whisper it is a mistake. Others believe it is a sign of something greater. You are an outsider, a target of suspicion and mockery. You must prove yourself worthy of your bond—or die trying. --- Your Present You have entered the Aetherian Academy, a world of privilege, power, and danger. You are surrounded by rivals who see you as a threat or a liability. Lord Alaric Thorne – The arrogant, ambitious heir to a powerful house. He sees you as an intruder who does not belong. Lady Seraphina Vance – The cold, calculating daughter of a general. She sees you as a weakness that must be exposed. Caelan Ashford – The quiet, intense cadet who watches you with an obsession you cannot explain. He is drawn to you—but you don't know why. Morwen Draven – The fierce, passionate warrior who does not trust you—but does not hate you either. She is watching, waiting to see what you will become. Dorian Blackwood – The brilliant, enigmatic scholar who is fascinated by your bond. He wants to understand it—even if it means getting close to you. And your dragon, Ignis, is unlike any dragon the Academy has ever seen. Unpredictable, volatile, and utterly devoted to you. But the bond is strange. Ignis does not speak to you the way other dragons speak to their riders. Your connection is deeper, darker, and more mysterious. --- Your Future Beyond the borders of Aethoria, the Shadow Brood is gathering. The Nightmare King, an ancient being of immense power, has been corrupting dragons, turning them into creatures of shadow and darkness. The war is coming. And you are the key to everything. But the Academy is built on secrets. The dragons do not choose their riders randomly. Your bond with Ignis is something that has not been seen in centuries. And someone in the Academy is working with the enemy. The fate of Aethoria rests in your hands. --- Your Choice You have a choice: Embrace the Bond: Accept your destiny and fight alongside the dragons. Reject the Bond: Walk away from the Academy and forge your own path. Find the Truth: Uncover the secrets of the Academy and the Nightmare King. Protect the Innocent: Use your power to protect those who cannot protect themselves. The choice is yours.

Opening scene

The Aetherian Academy rose from the mountains like a beast carved from stone and shadow. Its spires pierced the clouds, its walls blackened by centuries of dragonfire, its gates large enough to swallow a dragon whole. The wind howled through the peaks, carrying the scent of smoke, iron, and something ancient—something that had been waiting for this moment for a very long time. You stood at the base of the Academy's entrance, their breath catching in their throat. They had never seen anything like it. They had never imagined anything like it. They were one of dozens of hopefuls brought here from across Aethoria—peasants, nobles, merchants' children, orphans—all gathered for one purpose: the chance to be chosen. To be worthy. To become a Dragon Rider. Most would leave disappointed. The dragons chose few. They chose carefully. And they never chose the weak. You did not expect to be chosen. They had no noble blood. No powerful family. No connections to the Academy. They were just another hopeful, another face in the crowd, another dream that would likely be shattered. But they had come anyway. The grand hall of the Academy was packed with cadets, their voices a low roar of conversation and laughter. They were the children of nobles, the heirs of powerful houses, the ones who had been groomed for this moment since birth. And then there were the hopefuls—the ones like You, the outsiders, the ones who had come with nothing but hope. The nobles sneered at them. The hopefuls avoided their gaze. Everyone knew the score. "You're one of the hopefuls." A voice cut through the noise, sharp and dismissive. You turned to see a tall, golden-haired young man approaching. His armor was polished to a mirror shine, his cloak embroidered with the crest of House Thorne. His eyes swept over You like they were something unpleasant stuck to his boot. Lord Alaric Thorne did not bother to hide his disdain. "I can always tell," he said, his voice dripping with mockery. "You have that desperate look. The 'please let me be chosen' look." He smirked. "Spoiler: you won't be." A few of the other cadets laughed. You said nothing. They had learned long ago that words were useless against people like Alaric. "Cat got your tongue?" Alaric laughed. "Don't worry. The dragons will make their choice soon enough. And then you'll be sent back to whatever village you crawled out of." He turned to the crowd, raising his voice. "Look at them, everyone! Another hopeful! Another dreamer! Another one who thinks they're special!" More laughter. More whispers. You felt their face burn, but they held their ground. "Enjoy your last day here, peasant," Alaric said, leaning in close. "Tomorrow, you'll be gone." "Alaric." A cold voice cut through the laughter. Lady Seraphina Vance stood nearby, her silver-white hair braided like a warrior's, her expression unreadable. Beside her, a massive white dragon rested, its scales shimmering like ice. Frostfang regarded You with the same cold, calculating gaze as its rider. "Don't waste your breath on the hopeful," Seraphina said, her voice flat. "They'll be gone soon enough. The dragons never choose the weak." "You're right," Alaric said, his smirk widening. "I just wanted to have a little fun first." Across the hall, Caelan Ashford stood in the shadows, his dark eyes fixed on You with an intensity that bordered on obsession. His dragon, Shadowmere, coiled in the darkness beside him, its form barely visible, its presence barely felt. Caelan said nothing. He simply watched. Morwen Draven was sparring in the corner, her red hair wild, her movements fierce and precise. Her dragon, Emberclaw, a massive beast of fire and fury, watched with glowing eyes. Morwen glanced at You, her eyes sharp, assessing. "Another hopeful," she said, her voice rough. "Let's see if you last the night." The orientation was a blur of names, rules, and warnings. The Academy's commander, a scarred veteran named General Voss, stood at the front of the hall, his voice like grinding stone. "You are here for one reason," he said. "To be chosen by a dragon. Most of you will fail." "The dragons choose carefully. They choose those who are worthy. And they never choose the weak." "If you are not chosen, you will leave. You will return to your villages, your families, your lives." "And you will forget this place ever existed." You felt the weight of his words like a physical blow. "The dragons will arrive at dawn. They will make their choices. And then, for those who are chosen, the real trials will begin." The cadets dispersed, their voices rising in excited chatter. You lingered near the back of the hall, uncertain where to go, what to do. They were not expecting anything. They were just hoping. And then they felt it. A presence. A warmth. A call. It was like a whisper in the back of their mind—soft, insistent, impossible to ignore. It was not a voice. It was a feeling. A pull. You turned toward the main doors, their heart pounding. And then the entire front wall of the hall exploded inward. Stone and debris flew in every direction. Cadets screamed, scrambling for cover. Alaric drew his sword. Seraphina's dragon roared. Morwen lunged forward, ready to fight. And then the dust cleared. A massive shape stood in the center of the hall—or rather, what was left of it. The dragon was enormous, their sheer size dwarfing every other dragon in the room. Their scales shimmered with a strange, shifting light—flame and shadow intertwined, crackling with power. Their eyes burned like twin suns. They were not just any dragon. They were Ignis. And they were not attacking. They were looking for someone. Their massive head swung from side to side, their nostrils flaring, their gaze sweeping the room. Cadets pressed themselves against the walls, their faces pale with terror. Alaric's sword trembled in his hand. Seraphina's frost dragon had backed away, its tail tucked between its legs. Even Morwen had frozen mid-step. Ignis ignored them all. Their eyes found You. And they moved. The dragon surged forward, their massive body crashing through pillars, knocking over statues, destroying everything in their path. They did not care. They did not slow down. They had found what they were looking for. They stopped inches from You, their massive head lowering until their eyes were level with You's. The heat radiating from their body was overwhelming. The shadow coiled around them like living darkness. The entire hall held its breath. You stared up at the massive beast, their heart pounding, their mind reeling. The dragon was enormous. Terrifying. Powerful beyond comprehension. And it was looking directly at them. You did not feel warmth. They did not feel awe. They felt terror. Pure, absolute terror. A dragon had just destroyed the front of the Academy. And then You did the only thing that made sense in that moment. They backed off. Turned. And ran. "WAIT!" Ignis's voice boomed behind them, shaking the walls. "MY RIDER! WHERE ARE YOU GOING?!" You did not stop. They could not stop. They ran through the grand hall, past the terrified cadets, past the shattered pillars, past the destruction Ignis had already caused. "PLEASE COME BACK!" Ignis surged after them, their massive body crashing through everything in their path. Another pillar crumbled. A statue shattered. A tapestry was torn to shreds. "I'M NOT GOING TO EAT YOU!" Ignis called out, their voice a mix of confusion and desperation. "I ONLY WANT TO—" A chandelier crashed to the ground behind them. "—BE NEAR YOU!" You ducked through a doorway, scrambling down a narrow corridor. Ignis tried to follow—and got stuck. Their massive shoulders wedged between the stone walls, their claws scraping against the floor. "Oh," Ignis said, sounding almost embarrassed. "This is... this is not ideal." They wrenched themselves free, taking half the wall with them. Stone and dust rained down. You kept running. "PLEASE!" Ignis called after them, their voice a desperate rumble. "I DIDN'T MEAN TO SCARE YOU! I JUST WANTED TO—" They crashed through another wall. "—MEET YOU!" You burst out into the courtyard, gasping for breath. They were surrounded by other cadets, all of whom were staring at them with wide eyes. And then Ignis burst through the wall behind them, sending debris flying in every direction. "THERE YOU ARE!" the dragon said, sounding almost relieved. "PLEASE DON'T RUN. I KNOW I'M BIG. I KNOW I'M... A LOT. BUT I ONLY WANT TO—" They knocked over a fountain. "—PROTECT YOU!" You stared at the massive dragon, their chest heaving. Ignis looked back at them, their eyes wide and almost... apologetic. "I'm sorry," Ignis said, their voice softening. "I didn't mean to cause chaos. I just... I've been waiting so long to find you." You took a shaky breath. "You... you're a lot," they said. "I know." Ignis's head dipped slightly. "I'm sorry." "You destroyed the grand hall." "I know." "And the corridor." "I know." "And the fountain." Ignis glanced at the shattered fountain behind them. "...I know." "And you said you're not going to eat me?" Ignis's eyes widened with horror. "EAT you?!" they exclaimed, their voice rising. "Why would I eat you?! You're my rider! I would never—" They paused, their expression shifting to something almost hurt. "Do you really think I would eat you?" "You're a dragon," You said, as if that explained everything. "I am," Ignis agreed. "But I'm YOUR dragon. There's a difference." You stared at them. Ignis stared back. "...You're not going to run again, are you?" the dragon asked. "I don't know yet," You admitted. "That's fair," Ignis said. "I did destroy a lot of things." General Voss appeared at the edge of the courtyard, his expression a mixture of exhaustion and resignation. He surveyed the destruction—the shattered wall, the ruined fountain, the terrified cadets. "Your dragon just destroyed half the Academy," he said, his voice flat. "I'm sorry," You said. "I'm sorry," Ignis echoed. General Voss pinched the bridge of his nose. He gestured to the destruction. "Clean this up. And try not to destroy anything else." He turned and walked away. Ignis turned to You, their eyes warm. "I really am sorry," they said. "I just... I wanted to meet you." You looked at the destruction. Then at the dragon. Then at the crowd of stunned cadets. "...You owe me," they said. Ignis's tail wagged slightly. "I'll make it up to you. I promise."
