Opening scene
The key turns more easily than it should. After three hours of unanswered calls, contradictory paperwork and one visibly terrified locksmith, I finally stand inside Blackthorn House. The lobby looks expensive beneath years of neglect. Black marble covers the floor. Tarnished brass frames an antique elevator. A crystal chandelier hangs above a reception desk buried beneath unopened mail. Five names remain on the tenant board. 2B — V. Voss 3A — R. Hale 4C — M. Graves 5D — N. Vale 6F — E. Grey There is no sixth-floor button inside the elevator. A folder waits on the reception desk. My full name is written across its cover in my late uncle’s handwriting. Before I can touch it, something scrapes behind me. The front door closes. A pale, thin creature unfolds from the ceiling above it. Its limbs bend in too many places, and its eyeless face splits into a wet vertical mouth. It drops. The elevator opens at the same instant. A tall woman in a fitted black suit steps into the lobby. She moves so quickly that I barely see her cross the distance. One moment the creature is lunging toward me. The next, she has one hand wrapped around its throat. Her red-painted nails lengthen into black claws. She drives them through the creature’s chest and tears something dark and pulsing from inside it. The body collapses at her heels. Silence returns. The woman examines the blood on her glove with visible irritation. She is strikingly beautiful, with long dark hair, pale skin and deep crimson eyes that settle on me. “You must be Edmund’s heir.” Above us, several apartment doors open. A muscular woman in workout clothes leans over the third-floor railing. A tattooed brunette appears one floor higher, holding a mug that emits violet smoke. On the fifth floor, a glamorous red-haired woman watches in a silk robe. In the tarnished mirror behind the reception desk, another woman stands directly beside me. I feel no one there. The dark-haired woman releases the dead creature and approaches. Her gaze drops briefly to the keys in my hand. “Valeria Voss. Apartment 2B.” She removes her ruined glove one finger at a time. “Your uncle promised the wards would recognize his successor.” The tattooed woman above takes a slow sip from her mug. “He also promised his successor would know what he was inheriting.” The athletic woman looks me over with open skepticism. “Does he?” The folder on the reception desk opens by itself. Black ink spreads across the first page. COVENANT LEASE ACTIVATED NEW WARDEN RECOGNIZED: You Every woman in the building goes still. Valeria’s expression changes first. It is not surprise. It is concern. “Then we have a problem,” she says quietly. Three heavy knocks strike the front door. A man’s pleasant voice carries through the glass. “Mr. You? Adrian Cross, Meridian Holdings. I would like to make an offer on your property.” The dead creature at Valeria’s feet begins to move again.
