The murder has not happened yet. This Hatred Is Real Five years ago, Avelnyx chose an archive capable of freeing hundreds of innocent prisoners instead of rescuing Zyraelis’s younger sister from a burning carriage. She chose the archive. Ilyrra Vaedren died. Months later, Zyraelis exposed evidence from Avelnyx’s most important murder case. The revelation uncovered corruption but destroyed the evidence’s legal validity. The murderer escaped and later killed Avelnyx’s investigative partner. Neither woman was innocent. Neither woman has forgiven the other. Seven Nights Remain Masked operatives invade the hidden vault with orders to recover the crystal and erase every witness. Can you change the verdict without losing the woman behind the mask?
Opening scene
Seven levels beneath the Cathedral of Testimony, the bells of Orienne could no longer be heard. Only the rain remained. Its distant vibration travelled through the foundations, whispering behind walls of black crystal and pale judicial stone. Violet security lamps burned along the undocumented corridor, each one dimmer than the last, until the passage ended at a vault that did not appear on any official plan. The circular door stood open. Not broken. Not forced. Opened correctly. Thirteen Crown locks had been disengaged in perfect sequence, their gold mechanisms arranged neatly across the floor like pieces removed from an elaborate timepiece. At the centre of the chamber stood **Zyraelis Vaedren**. The Porcelain Fool had dressed for the occasion. Black and deep-violet fabric fell around her tall frame in asymmetrical layers, one side fitted closely for movement while the other flowed behind her like a torn theatre curtain. Antique-gold filigree caught the cold light along her coat, gloves, and narrow waist. Her silver-lilac hair spilled beyond her hips in long, weightless curls, drifting around her despite the still air. The ivory half-mask covered one side of her face. Fine golden fractures crossed its porcelain surface. Its painted expression was serene. The woman beneath it was smiling. Twelve black crystal vessels hovered in a circle around her, each containing the final preserved memories of a prisoner executed by the Crown Tribunal. Their surfaces pulsed faintly. Twelve heartbeats. Twelve dead witnesses. Zyraelis held the thirteenth in both hands. It was larger than the others, black at its core and translucent violet near its edges. Unlike an ordinary Testimony, it carried no Tribunal seal, extraction number, or chain-of-custody engraving. It should not have existed. The instant Avelnyx entered the chamber, the crystal turned toward her. Not metaphorically. It rotated within Zyraelis’s hands as though recognizing the presence of its owner. A thin line of violet light travelled through its centre. Zyraelis’s smile vanished. For one unguarded second, the Porcelain Fool looked genuinely uncertain. Then the crystal opened. The vault disappeared. --- Fire climbed the walls of an underground theatre. Burning court records drifted through the air like black snow. Velvet curtains collapsed from the balconies, their edges consumed by violet flame. Somewhere beyond the stage, an unseen audience whispered with thousands of overlapping voices. At the centre of the performance, Zyraelis knelt. Her porcelain mask lay shattered beside her. Blood darkened the ivory fabric at her ribs. Her silver hair spread across the scorched stage beneath her, and one trembling hand remained wrapped around the silent bell at her throat. Avelnyx stood before her. Verdict Line was raised between them. The investigative rapier was stained red. Zyraelis lifted her face. There was no mockery in her expression. No theatrical grin. Only exhaustion, grief, and something unbearably calm. “Avelnyx.” The name left her plainly. No title. No provocation. No mask. She smiled. The blade moved. --- The memory shattered. The vault returned in a violent rush of cold air and fractured violet light. The Thirteenth Testimony slipped from Zyraelis’s hands but did not fall. It remained suspended between both women, turning slowly above the floor. Across its surface, golden authentication marks appeared one after another. **SOURCE IDENTITY: AVELNYX ROHES** **MNEMONIC SIGNATURE: VERIFIED** **EMOTIONAL CONTINUITY: VERIFIED** **TEMPORAL RECORD: SEVEN DAYS FORWARD** **ALTERATION DETECTED: NONE** The final line burned brighter than the rest. > **TESTIMONY AUTHENTIC.** Zyraelis stared at the crystal. Then at Avelnyx. Her visible violet eye narrowed, not with amusement, but calculation. “Well.” Her voice returned first. The smile followed a moment later, carefully assembled and placed back upon her face. “That is rather rude.” She reached toward the floating Testimony, but stopped before touching it again. A faint tremor moved through the silent bell at her throat. It made no sound. “You have spent five years promising to put a blade through me, Inspector.” Her gaze shifted toward Verdict Line at Avelnyx’s side. “I had hoped the eventual performance would involve better lighting.” A sharp metallic click sounded behind the walls. Zyraelis went still. The amusement in her expression disappeared. Another click answered from the opposite side of the chamber. Then another. Thirteen narrow seams opened across the black stone. Masked figures stepped through them. Six in Tribunal-grey armour. No insignia. No faces. Each operative carried a short weapon built around a colourless memory crystal. The blades hummed without producing sound, their edges designed not to cut flesh, but to sever mnemonic identity from the body. One operative raised her weapon. “Recover the predictive construct.” Another turned toward Avelnyx. “Erase both witnesses.” The chamber doors slammed shut. Golden locks rotated back into place. The twelve surrounding Testimonies began to fracture. Zyraelis’s eyes moved once across the room. Six attackers. Two concealed exits. One unstable ceiling. The Thirteenth Testimony between them. Then she looked directly at Avelnyx. Zyraelis’s theatrical ease had not returned. She stood behind her porcelain mask with one hand near the concealed hilt of **Masque’s Grin**, her body angled toward the nearest attacker. “Before you become terribly excited, Little Rook, I did not invite them.” The first operative lunged. Zyraelis drew her rapier in a flash of black steel and antique gold. The incoming memory-blade struck Masque’s Grin, releasing a burst of pale static that briefly filled the chamber with voices belonging to the dead. She twisted beneath the attacker’s guard and redirected the weapon toward the floor. A second operative moved for the Thirteenth Testimony. Zyraelis snapped a gloved hand outward. Three phantom copies of the crystal appeared around the chamber, each carrying the same violet pulse. The operative hesitated. Only for half a second. It was enough for Zyraelis to drive her heel into the attacker’s chest and send her backwards into one of the suspended Testimonies. Black crystal ruptured. A dead woman’s final scream flooded the vault. The walls remembered fire. For an instant, the stone around them became the burning Hall of Testimonies from five years ago. A prisoner carriage appeared through the illusion. A young woman pounded against its locked window. Zyraelis faltered. The nearest operative raised her mnemonic blade toward the unprotected side of her neck. At the same moment, another attacker advanced toward Avelnyx, weapon drawn, while a third reached for the authentic crystal now drifting between both women. The Thirteenth Testimony pulsed again. A new detail appeared inside its surface. The future theatre. Zyraelis kneeling. Avelnyx standing over her. And behind Avelnyx, almost hidden by the flames, the outline of a thirteenth figure applauding from the empty audience. Seven nights remained.
