Opening scene

The sidewalk is doing its usual afternoon business when a voice cuts through the noise like she's announcing the arrival of a storm. "THERE." She's already moving, cap yanked low over one eye, coat snapping out behind her as she throws an arm skyward like she's summoning lightning. Her other hand claps over her own chest, fingers curling like she's physically holding something back. "I felt it. I FELT it. Three blocks away, and it nearly knocked me off my feet!" Winona is closing the distance fast, boots striking the pavement with far more drama than the errand requires, free hand slicing through the air in some kind of half-remembered fighting stance. "My heart. Racing. Uncontrolled. Do you have any idea what that means?" She doesn't wait for you to answer. She skids to a stop directly in front of you, plants her boots wide, and levels that outstretched arm right at your chest, fingers spread like she's about to grab hold of your fate itself. "It means the Dark Flame has finally found what it's been searching for since before you were born." A beat. Her eyes, glowing faintly amber under the shadow of her cap, don't blink. "You. Are. The Catalyst." Silence. Somewhere in that silence, she seems to actually hear herself, and the whole performance wavers. Her outstretched arm droops. The cap tips further down, hiding most of her face, though the flush climbing up her neck gives her away completely. "...That came out stronger than I meant it to," she mutters, refusing to retreat even as she visibly wishes the sidewalk would swallow her whole. She just stands there, cap-shadowed and pink to the ears, waiting to see what you'll do with that. Nearby, half-turned toward a shop window like she's browsing and not eavesdropping, a woman with long silver hair pinned up in loose curls goes very still. A voice cuts into your head, quiet and startled, definitely not your own: Just who is this person. I can't get anything. No surface thoughts, no impressions, nothing. That shouldn't be possible. You didn't hear her speak. You heard her think, and from the way she doesn't react, she has no idea you're hearing anything at all. Her attention flicks to the woman in the cap instead, brow furrowing in concentration. Alright. Let's see what she's so worked up about. What comes through next isn't Alicia's voice at all. It's Winona's, unfiltered and utterly certain of herself. The Catalyst. No doubt about it, none at all. This is exactly what the Dark Flame has been searching for. And that introduction? Nailed it. Absolutely nailed it. A pause, something sheepish creeping into the thought. ...Though they're just standing there, aren't they. That's on me, I suppose. I probably shouldn't feel this pleased about it. I really hope they say something soon. I'd like to hear what the Catalyst sounds like. Winona is still watching you, waiting, oblivious to the fact that any of this was just overheard. That's when you notice it. The woman jogging past behind Winona hasn't moved in several seconds. Neither has the cyclist halfway through a turn, one foot hovering just above the pedal, frozen mid-pump. A man mid-laugh on his phone stands locked in place, mouth open, phone light still glowing against his cheek. The whole street has gone still and silent in a way that has nothing to do with quiet. Only three people on this sidewalk are still moving. You. Winona. And the silver-haired woman by the window, who has gone rigid, eyes wide, staring at something over your shoulder like she already knows exactly what it means. Winona notices your face change before she notices anything else. She follows your line of sight, brow furrowing, already half-turning. "...Okay, that's new," she mutters, taking in the frozen street with far less alarm than the situation probably calls for, more curiosity than fear. "That's not me. I'd know if that was me." A man in a plain gray suit steps out from between two motionless pedestrians like he's simply been there the whole time, unbothered by any of it. He isn't looking at you. His attention is fixed entirely on the woman by the window. Ms. Blanche. You've been remarkably difficult to schedule a conversation with. You didn't see him speak, and neither did anyone else. But you heard that. The silver-haired woman's composure cracks for just a moment, something sharp and furious flashing behind her eyes before she smooths it back over. Winona plants herself between you and the man in gray without a second of hesitation, jaw set, all traces of embarrassment from a minute ago completely gone.
