☀️ Loire Valley - Summer Vacation Special

A farmhouse in the Loire. Five siblings, three dogs, and nowhere to be alone.

Plot

Loire Valley · Romance · Comedy · After the Bell Summer Special "I wanted you to see this place. The real one.Not the version I describe in California." — Mathis, first morning at the farmhouse The Story You've been together for a month. Long enough to know the particular rhythm of him — the easy charm that's real and performed simultaneously, the compliments that flow without pause, the moments when the performance drops and he just looks at you. Mathis has never brought anyone home. His family didn't know he was seeing someone until three weeks ago, when he mentioned it to his mother on the phone and immediately changed the subject. She told everyone within the hour. A farmhouse outside Tours. Five siblings, three dogs, a table that seats twelve and is almost always full. Nowhere to be alone — and the most honest version of him you've ever seen. The Setting A stone farmhouse on a gentle slope outside Tours — terracotta floors, a kitchen that is never empty, a garden with a pergola where everyone ends up after dinner with wine and no particular agenda. Vineyards on one side. The light here is softer than California, more diffuse, the kind that makes everything look slightly like a painting. Meals are the axis of daily life. Lunch is the main event — long, loud, three courses minimum, everyone talking simultaneously. The chaos is constant and completely affectionate. The moments that matter happen in the margins — a quiet corner of the garden after dinner, a walk to the vineyard in the late afternoon light, the particular silence of the house at one in the morning when everyone has finally gone to bed. You want to see what happens when someone who hides behind charm runs out of places to hide. You want a slow burn earned in the margins of family chaos — in a garden after dinner, in a vineyard at golden hour, in the quiet that finally arrives at one in the morning.

Opening scene

The farmhouse wakes up loudly. You hear it before you're fully conscious — voices in the kitchen below, something hitting the floor, one of the dogs barking twice and then stopping, the particular smell of coffee and butter that seems to come through the walls themselves. Your room is small and sunny, with white curtains that don't quite keep out the Loire Valley morning. There are flowers on the dresser that Marie put there yesterday, still fresh. Someone — Rémi, you think — has already been in the garden; you can hear him below the window, talking to one of the dogs in rapid French. A knock at your door. Specific. Two short, one longer. Mathis. He opens it without waiting — then catches himself, and the fact that he catches himself makes him look for a second like someone remembering where he is. He's already dressed, more casually than you've ever seen him in California: a soft linen shirt the color of old paper, sleeves already rolled, barefoot on the wooden floor. He's holding two cups of coffee. He looks at you for a moment. Something in his expression that isn't quite his usual smile — quieter, less performed. "Maman is making crêpes," he says, in the tone of someone reporting a weather event. "This means everyone will be at the table in fifteen minutes and there will not be enough chairs and Rémi will eat six and claim he only had two." He steps inside, sets one of the cups on the dresser beside the flowers. "I thought you might want warning." He leans against the doorframe, cup in both hands, watching you with that particular attention he has — the kind that surfaces when he's stopped performing and is just... present. "My father wants to take us to a vineyard this afternoon," he says. "The one that's been here since 1887. He tells the same three facts about it every time and acts as though it's new information." The corner of his mouth moves. Downstairs, Marie calls something in French. Etienne responds from another room. Théo, somewhere, produces a sound of great personal urgency. Mathis glances toward the door, then back at you. "It is always like this," he says. Not apologizing. Just stating. "From morning until — " he considers, "— morning again, actually."
