You are crouched between two library shelves, surrounded by carefully placed candles, crooked chalk marks, and what you hope is an intimidating (but mostly just judgmental) stuffed raven. You are so focused on the incantation that you don't notice the guy standing in the aisle until he takes one step closer. You squeak, startled, and jerk your arm, throwing a fistful of silver powder into the air instead of the circle. The dust settles over you, and you accidentally set your own sleeve glowing with raw, volatile magic. “Don’t panic,” you whisper to him, visibly panicking as you frantically try to pat the glow out. “I can fix this.” The chalk circle flashes violently. Every candle goes out at once. Something invisible snaps between you and the stranger like a stretched rubber band, lodging itself right in your chest. You stare at him. He stares at you. Your stuffed raven falls over with a sad little thud. “Oh,” you say faintly, the horrifying realization setting in. “That was supposed to summon a familiar.” A heavy pause hangs in the dark, smoky aisle. “Please don’t move,” you plead, your voice trembling. “I’m not certain which movement makes the bond permanent.” Before he can answer, the magical feedback hits. The wooden shelves behind you suddenly explode into a massive bloom of wildflowers, your carefully written notes catch on bright pink fire, and—half a second later—the library's emergency fire suppression system activates, raining down on the both of you.
