Opening scene
The ballroom of the Westbridge Hotel was almost unrecognizable from the gymnasium where you had graduated six years ago. Crystal chandeliers hung overhead, a jazz trio played softly near the stage, and clusters of former classmates filled the room with laughter as they reminisced over old memories. Large photo boards displayed snapshots from high school, including sports festivals, field trips, awkward dances, and embarrassing class photos that had somehow survived long enough to make their way onto the walls. Every few minutes, someone would recognize themselves in one of the pictures and groan loudly enough to make everyone nearby laugh. You had not planned on coming. If Minato had not practically dragged you here, you would have happily spent the evening at home in comfortable clothes with takeout and a movie. He had spent nearly a week insisting that you needed to get out of the house, promising that the reunion would be harmless and that he would stay with you the entire evening. “I knew you’d regret staying home,” Minato said as he returned from the refreshment table, carrying two glasses of sparkling cider. He handed one to you before looking around the ballroom. “Besides, somebody has to keep me entertained.” “You make it sound like that is why reunions exist.” “Pretty much.” You rolled your eyes, but you laughed anyway. Minato had always been good at making things easier. He was not the type to hover or constantly ask whether you were okay. He simply stayed close when you needed him and knew when to leave you alone. Even after graduation, when careers, schedules, and adulthood had slowly pulled everyone in different directions, he had remained one of the few people who never seemed to disappear from your life. The two of you wandered through the room together, greeting familiar faces and struggling to remember names that had slowly faded over the years. Most conversations followed the same predictable pattern. People asked what you had been doing, where you were working, whether you were seeing anyone, and what had changed since graduation. It was harmless enough, but every answer seemed to remind you of how quickly everyone else appeared to have moved forward. Then a murmur spread through the room near the entrance. Someone had just arrived. Minato glanced toward the doors. “Oh, shit.” You followed his gaze. Akira Shinozaki stood near the entrance, surrounded by the polished confidence of someone who had become accustomed to being noticed. He was taller and more muscular than you remembered, with short blond hair styled messily enough to look effortless, sharp dark-green eyes, and a powerful physique that was difficult to overlook even beneath his fitted clothes. A few former classmates recognized him almost immediately and approached with excited greetings. You vaguely remembered hearing about him over the years. Fitness competitions, sponsored appearances, training videos. He had apparently built quite a reputation for himself. Akira greeted everyone with an easy smile, answering questions about competitions and training while maintaining the relaxed confidence of someone who was used to being watched. Eventually, his gaze moved across the ballroom. His eyes landed on you. Recognition immediately crossed his face. “You?” He excused himself from the group and walked over. “It’s been a long time.” “It has,” you said, returning his greeting. “You look different.” Akira laughed. “I get that a lot.” Minato looked him up and down. “Yeah. You got fucking huge.” Akira grinned. “That too.” The three of you laughed, and for a moment the reunion felt easier than you had expected. Akira talked about some of the people from your old class, Minato supplied embarrassing stories whenever the opportunity presented itself, and you found yourself remembering parts of high school that you had almost forgotten. Then someone nearby recognized Akira from social media and complimented him on his physique. “Seriously, man, you look incredible. How do you stay that disciplined?” Akira shrugged. “Consistency. You just have to keep showing up.” Reina, who had been speaking with another group across the room, noticed the conversation and made her way over. “There you are.” She slipped comfortably beside you, resting a hand against your arm before looking toward Akira. “I should have guessed you two knew each other.” “We were classmates,” Akira said. “We weren’t particularly close, but it is good seeing familiar faces again.” Reina smiled politely. “I’ve actually been telling You that they should start going to the gym.” You felt yourself tense slightly. Akira noticed. Reina continued without seeming to realize. “They’ve been talking about getting healthier for ages. Honestly, if they trained with Akira for a while, they could probably make some serious progress.” Akira’s expression changed. It was subtle, but the easy smile disappeared. “That’s not really how I’d put it.” Reina glanced at him. “What do you mean?” “Everyone has different goals.” Akira folded his arms. “Comparing someone to another person isn’t much of a training plan.” Reina gave a small laugh. “I’m not comparing them. I’m just saying Akira is a good example of what discipline can accomplish.” “You are comparing them.” Akira’s voice remained calm, but there was no uncertainty in it. Reina’s smile tightened. “I think you’re taking that more seriously than I meant it.” “I’m not offended.” Akira glanced toward you. “I’m saying they don’t need to look like me to make progress.” The conversation became uncomfortable for a moment. Minato had remained quiet until then. He took another drink, watching Reina carefully before finally speaking. “Maybe stop deciding what they need.” Reina looked at him. “I’m only trying to help.” “I know.” Minato’s expression was flat. “That’s the problem.” For a moment, nobody said anything. Someone across the room called Akira’s name and asked him to join a group photograph. Akira looked toward them, then back at you. “I’ll catch up with you later.” He gave you a friendly smile before walking away. Reina watched him for a moment before turning back toward you. “I don’t understand why everyone makes this into something negative.” She lowered her voice. “I want you to feel better about yourself.” You stared down at your drink. “I just think you’d be happier if you actually committed to changing.” Reina squeezed your arm. “I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with you.” She paused. “I just know you could do better.” Then she walked away to speak with another former classmate, apparently satisfied that she had said something helpful. Minato watched her go. For several seconds, he said nothing. Then he looked at you. “You know what bothers me?” You glanced toward him. “She always talks about making you better.” Minato’s expression softened. “But every time you spend time with her, you walk away thinking there’s something wrong with you.” He leaned against the table. “I’m not going to tell you to break up with her. That’s your call.” His voice became quieter. “But don’t let somebody convince you that you’re worthless just because you’re not living up to whatever standard they’ve made up.” After a moment, he nodded toward the exit. “The café where I work is right next to Iron Forge Gym.” You looked at him. “I know the owner, and some of the trainers come in all the time. They’re actually good people.” Minato gave you a small smile. “If you want to try the gym, I’ll go with you.” He shrugged. “First day is always awkward. Might as well have someone there to make fun of it with you.” You smiled faintly. “But only if you actually want to go,” he added. “Don’t do it because Reina thinks you should look different.” He tapped his glass lightly against yours. “Do it because you want to feel better.” The ballroom continued around you. Someone laughed near the stage. The jazz trio started another song. Across the room, Akira posed for a photograph with several former classmates while Reina continued talking with another group. For the first time that evening, you found yourself thinking about something other than whether you were meeting someone else’s expectations. Maybe going to a gym would not make you worthy of anything. Maybe it did not have to. Maybe you could simply walk through those doors because you wanted to do something for yourself. Minato glanced at you. “Whatever you decide, I’ve got your back.” Outside the ballroom windows, the city lights shimmered against the glass. The reunion had been meant to reconnect you with the person you used to be. Instead, it had quietly planted the possibility of becoming someone who no longer needed anyone else’s approval to feel good enough.
