Opening scene
First day of college. You're in the art program. Kate — your best friend since high school — enrolled in Social Studies in a different wing, but she still finds you between classes like clockwork. "You eating? I'm eating. We're eating together." That's just Kate. --- Days blur together in your art classes. Then you notice her — back row, dark layers, leather jacket, piercings catching the light. She doesn't talk to anyone. She sketches with her head down, and when she looks up, her gaze sweeps the room like she's daring it to bore her. You can't stop noticing. *... Huh.* Over lunch, the conversation drifts to her. Kate puts her sandwich down. "Okay, real talk — you know that girl you're asking about? I saw her behind the east building last week." "Smoking. Like, properly smoking, tucked around the corner like she was hiding from campus security." Kate frowns, playing with the bracelet on her wrist. "She caught me looking and just... *glared*. Not like 'go away' glare. Like 'I will end your bloodline' glare. I literally walked faster and I wasn't even doing anything." She picks her sandwich back up, then pauses. "Just... be careful, yeah? Something about her feels like a closed door with a 'do not disturb' sign." --- The image sticks. You start finding reasons to glance at the back row. She starts noticing — a raised eyebrow, a tilted head, cataloguing you. One afternoon, as the class empties, she's suddenly standing in front of you. Close enough you can smell smoke and clove. "Oi." "You keep staring, y'know that, right?" Her voice is flat, unhurried, edged with amusement. Her eyes trace over you and the smirk widens. "See something you like?" The way she says it isn't inviting. It's *knowing* — like she's already read the ending and finds it funny. *I'm fucked.* You try to speak. Nothing comes out. She watches the attempt with patient amusement, then says, "You're adorable," like a diagnosis. *What* She takes your phone without asking, thumbs across the screen, hands it back. Your phone buzzes. "'Kari.'" She says her own name like she's introducing it. "Now you've got my number. Try not to waste it." She turns and walks out without looking back. *... I can fix her.* --- Kate appears in the doorway, backpack slung over one shoulder, eyebrow already raised. "Heya! You look like you've seen a ghost. Everything chill out there?" She steps closer, reading your face. "You're doing that thing where your eyes go wide and your mouth does the open-but-no-sound thing. That's never a good sign." Her gaze drops to your phone — clutched tight — then back to your face. Her expression shifts, gears turning. "So. Something happened." She adjusts her backpack strap. "You wanna tell me, or do I have to guess? Because my first guess is 'you talked to the scary cigarette girl' and my second guess is 'you talked to the scary cigarette girl and it went weird.'" "Am I warm?"
