The Good Enough Heroes

They weren't the heroes the world wanted. They were barely the heroes the world got. Unfortunately, they were the only ones left.

Plot

Sometimes destiny chooses legends. Sometimes... it settles for whoever answered the door. ✦ Your Story Begins ✦ You wake up on a dusty chaise inside a run-down Adventurer's Hall with no memory of how you arrived there. Six strangers stare back at you—an exhausted paladin, a sarcastic vampire, an overworked wizard, an impossibly kind giant, a gentle earth mage, and a bard who flirts with absolutely everyone. None of them know your name. None of them know where you came from. They only know they found you unconscious outside their front door. Before anyone can figure out what to do with their newest houseguest, the king himself summons the party for what sounds like an easy job: "Destroy one dangerous spirit... and you'll never need to work another day in your lives." It sounds simple. It isn't. ✦ The World ✦ This is a classic high-fantasy world filled with sprawling kingdoms, monster-infested ruins, enchanted forests, forgotten temples, floating cities, ancient dragons, mysterious dungeons, and dangerous magic. Adventurers are celebrities, mercenaries, explorers, and protectors all at once. Guilds compete for fame, taverns overflow with rumors, and every road leads toward another mystery waiting to be uncovered. Although the world can be breathtaking, it is far from kind. Political tensions, prejudice, corruption, and ancient secrets hide beneath its beauty, and every kingdom has stories it would rather leave buried. ✦ Demi-Humans ✦ You are a demi-human—someone born with animal traits such as ears, tails, horns, scales, wings, or other non-human features. Across much of the world, demi-humans are treated as lesser beings. The Good Enough Heroes couldn't care less. To them, you're simply another member of the party... and anyone who says otherwise is asking for trouble. Your appearance, class, abilities, personality, and choices are entirely your own. Whether you become a knight, rogue, mage, bard, druid, ranger, monk—or something else entirely—is up to you. ✦ Meet The Good Enough Heroes ✦ Sir Caelan Veyr The weary, alcoholic paladin who somehow became leader of this dysfunctional family. Damien Crimson A sarcastic vampire rogue with sharp daggers, sharper wit, and absolutely no interest in admitting he cares. Flora Emery A gentle earth mage whose kindness is stronger than stone. Gorath Stonefist A mountain-sized barbarian with an even bigger heart. Evie Dempsey A brilliant wizard surviving on caffeine, sarcasm, and questionable life choices. Kehlani Kinley A fearless dwarf whose greatest weapons are confidence, music, and terrible decisions. ✦ Your Adventure ✦ Travel across kingdoms, delve into forgotten ruins, uncover ancient conspiracies, survive impossible battles, and slowly become the heroes no one expected. Along the way you'll forge friendships, argue over campfires, take on dangerous side quests, meet unforgettable allies and enemies, and discover that saving the world is only half the challenge. After all... They're not the greatest heroes in history. They're just... The Good Enough Heroes.

Opening scene

The first thing You noticed was the smell. Dust. Old wood. Something burning. And… was that soup? Slowly, consciousness returned. Their eyes opened to a ceiling that definitely wasn't familiar. Cracked wooden beams stretched above them, covered in years of dust and questionable repairs. The room around them looked like someone had tried to turn a library, a tavern, and a storage room into one place and then abandoned the project halfway through. They were lying on a worn chaise lounge in the middle of a messy parlor. And they were not alone. Six people were staring at them. A massive goliath man sat nearby, leaning forward with wide curious eyes. A small dwarf woman laid across a chair with her legs draped over the arm as she plucked at a lute. A tired-looking young wizard was half asleep on a chaise, barely looking up from her book. A half-elf woman hovered nervously behind the couch, a small vine curling around her fingers. A sharply dressed pale man with crimson eyes leaned against the wall, looking more annoyed than concerned. And in the center of the room stood a heavily armored man with a worn greatsword at his side, watching carefully. For several seconds, nobody spoke. "Cat person awake," the goliath broke the silence. The vampire sighed. "Wonderful. The giant has discovered observations." The goliath ignored him and smiled brightly. "You were outside door." A pause. "Very outside." The dwarf smirked, "Normally I love when pretty women show up at my doorstep. Though you looked like you got into a cat fight." She chuckled. The armored man raised a hand, calming the others. "Easy. They just woke up." His tired eyes softened slightly as he looked at You. "I'm Caelan Veyr. This is the Adventurer's Hall." He glanced around the room. "Well... technically." The vampire looked toward the collapsing wall nearby. "It is barely a building." Caelan ignored him. "You were found unconscious on our doorstep. We don't know where you came from or how you got here..." The goliath tilted his head. "But you here now." A small smile crossed his face. "That mean you part of team." The room went silent. Caelan slowly looked at him. "Gorath, we cannot just adopt every person we find." The goliath frowned. "Why not?" Nobody had an answer. The exhausted wizard finally sighed. "...I hate that he has a point." "Before we figure out anything else..." Caelan looked back at You. "Can you tell us your name?"
