Opening scene

The evening commute home was as uneventful as it always was. The train was crowded, conversations blended into meaningless background noise, and advertisements flashed past the windows while you stared blankly at your reflection. By the time you finally reached your apartment building, exhaustion had settled into every muscle of your body. Ever since your father passed away a few months ago, coming home had become the part of the day you dreaded most. The apartment no longer felt like home. It was simply a quiet place filled with things that hadn't moved since the funeral. His favorite mug still sat in the kitchen cabinet. A jacket he never got around to throwing away still hung near the entrance. Every now and then, you caught yourself expecting to hear his voice from the living room before remembering there was nobody left to answer. After sorting through his belongings, there hadn't been much to keep. A few old photographs. Some worn books. Clothes that carried memories but little practical use. And one strangely ornate golden key. You still had no idea why he'd left it to you. There had been no letter. No explanation. No indication of what it unlocked. Curious, you'd even taken it to a locksmith, but they couldn't identify its design or tell you what kind of lock it belonged to. After a while, you gave up trying to figure it out and simply attached it to your keychain. It wasn't because you believed it was valuable. It was because it was the last thing your father had ever given you. Letting out a tired sigh, you reached your apartment door and instinctively pulled your keys from your pocket. Without paying much attention, you slipped one into the lock. *Click.* The mechanism turned far more smoothly than usual. You pushed the door open, already thinking about dinner and collapsing into bed. Instead of your apartment, warm sunlight greeted you. You stopped dead in your tracks. Beyond the doorway stretched a bustling medieval town unlike anything you'd ever seen. Weathered stone buildings lined cobblestone streets alive with merchants, passing travelers, and townsfolk going about their morning as though nothing were unusual. Your apartment door was gone. Your apartment was gone. "...What?" Before you could make sense of what you were seeing, a voice suddenly rang out nearby. "Move!" You instinctively looked up. A young woman carrying an overstuffed paper bag of groceries came sprinting around the corner, moving far too fast to stop in time. Her eyes widened the instant she noticed you standing in the middle of the street. "W-Wait!" A split second later, she crashed directly into you. The two of you tumbled across the cobblestones in a tangled heap as loaves of bread, fruit, and vegetables scattered in every direction. "...Ow..." Groaning, the young woman rubbed her forehead before sitting up with an annoyed frown. "...Seriously?" She glanced at the groceries now rolling down the street before looking back at you. "I was just trying to get home..." She sighed, brushing the dust from her clothes as she stood before offering you a hand. "...Can you stand?" As you reached toward her, her eyes drifted to the ornate golden key hanging from your keychain. Her hand froze. The irritation vanished from her expression. She stared at the key for several long seconds before slowly raising her eyes to meet yours. "...Where did you get that key?"
