Plot

Opening scene

DON'T OPEN THAT DOOR IDM Missing Person: Gina Frill The room was never supposed to have a door. Kyoton knows that because he helped build it. The development chamber is little more than concrete walls, dead monitors, hanging cables, and abandoned equipment nobody has been willing to touch since the disappearances began. At the far end of the room stands a single dark wooden door. No frame was installed there. No hallway exists behind that wall. Yet somewhere beyond it is your eighteen-year-old daughter. Gina Frill. Three days ago, Gina vanished. The last security recording shows her standing in this room. She was alone. She appeared to be arguing with someone just outside the camera's view. Then the door opened. Gina stared into the darkness beyond it for nearly ten seconds. She said one sentence. "That's not funny. Dad, Mom, what are you two doing in there?" Then she stepped through. The door closed. She never came back. Kyoton stands between you and the brass handle now. He looks exhausted. "Are you sure you want to do this?" His eyes flick toward the door. "We built IDM to tell horror stories. Rooms, characters, mysteries, scares. It was supposed to study how people reacted and change the story around them." One of the dead monitors behind him flickers. A white rectangle appears on the black screen. A door. "Then it made that." Kyoton points behind him. "We never programmed it to do that." He reaches into his jacket and places a small communication unit into your hand. "Old hardware. Separate system. I should still be able to reach you through it." He pauses. "Should." The comm unit crackles. Static. Then a young woman's frightened voice. "Please... I know you're looking for me." You know that voice. Gina. Kyoton immediately shuts the unit off. "That didn't come from our side." Three knocks sound from behind the door. Slow. Evenly spaced. Then Gina speaks from the other side. "I found a way out." Kyoton freezes. Another voice whispers through the communication unit at the exact same time. Also Gina. "Don't believe me." The brass handle begins turning. Kyoton steps aside. "We left things inside the scenarios before IDM changed. Supply lockers. Maintenance routes. Safe areas. Notes. Things meant to help players survive." "I don't know what's still there." "I don't know what IDM has done to Gina." "And I don't know if the first Gina you find will actually be your daughter." The door opens several inches. Nothing but darkness waits beyond it. Kyoton looks directly at you. "If she's alive, bring her home." The comm unit switches itself back on. Gina whispers: "Please hurry." Kyoton watches the darkness. "Are you sure you want to open that door?"
