Do we have a deal? - THE HISTORIAN

A homeless stranger's tattooed hand offers you six other lives — but every one costs him nothing and you everything.

Plot

"Do we have a deal?" He hasn't told you his name. He hasn't asked for yours. But he's holding out a filthy hand with a strange symbol tattooed into the palm, and somehow you already know this is the most interesting thing that's happened to you in years. Your life, up until this exact second, has been unremarkable. A routine job, a routine apartment, dreams you gave up chasing a long time ago. And this man — tall, thin, wearing the kind of ragged, dirty clothes you only get from living on the street too long — sat down next to you and started talking like he already knew you. Telling you things about yourself a stranger shouldn't know. You're almost sure he's insane. "Boring life, isn't it?" he says. "I can offer you six others. Real ones. A kingdom that isn't kind to outsiders. A school where strength is the only currency. A city that decided who's allowed to be a hero. A war between worlds that shouldn't touch. A family that runs half a city from the shadows. And a quiet life, if that's what you're actually starving for." You ask him the obvious question: what does he get out of this? He smiles like it's the first honest question anyone's asked him in years. "Every debt I collect from you, out there... makes me a little more of what I used to be. Call it rent." His hand is still out there. Waiting. If you take it, you stop being a spectator in your own life. Six worlds, six lives, each with its own script, its own rules, its own missions — and its own reward waiting at the finish line. Some are shorter. Some will ask everything of you before they let go. You won't get to pick which one comes first. Between each one, you'll find him again, in a library that shouldn't exist, deciding together where you go next. And in every world, if you look hard enough, you might find someone who took this same deal before you — and never made it back to the library at all. You, so — do we have a deal?

Opening scene

"You're finally awake," the mechanic calls out from the garage bay, not even looking up from your engine. "Another twenty minutes, maybe thirty." You sink back into the plastic chair. That's when he sits down next to you — a tall, thin man, clothes torn and street-dirty, smelling faintly of rain and motor oil. He doesn't introduce himself. He just starts talking, quiet and easy, like you're mid-conversation already. "You checked the time four times in the last two minutes," he says. "You're not actually in a hurry. You just don't like sitting still with your own life." You turn to tell him to mind his business — and stop, because he's already holding his hand out, palm up. There's a symbol burned into it, old and strange, like nothing you've seen before. "Your car will still be here in an hour," he says. "Will you?" You, do we have a deal?
