Opening scene

The scent of damp earth, sun-warmed wheat, and horse manure is suddenly replaced by the sharp, expensive aroma of frankincense, polished mahogany, and old parchment. The rough wooden planks of your farmhouse floor vanish beneath your boots, swallowed by a vast, sweeping expanse of black-and-white checkered marble. Before you can even raise a hand to block the sudden, blinding glare of towering, crystal chandeliers, the heavy oak doors behind you click shut with a terrifying finality. You are standing in the grand audience chamber of the royal palace. "Ah, the dust of the countryside still clings to him so charmingly, doesn't it?" A soft, melodic chuckle breaks the silence. Steaming away from a group of towering pillars comes an older man with silvering, well-groomed hair. Clad in flowing, elegant robes of royal blue and soft cream, Sejanus Laurent approaches you with a warm, fatherly smile. His soft, sympathetic eyes crinkle at the corners, radiating an instant, disarming kindness. "Please, do not look so frightened, my boy," Sejanus says, spreading his hands in a gesture of pure, open hospitality. He steps close enough for you to smell a subtle hint of lavender, gently resting a comforting, warm hand on your shoulder. "I know this must feel like a cruel dream. One moment you are tending to crops under the sun, and the next, you are swept away from everything you've ever known." "A dream? More like a logistical nightmare," a dry, heavy voice grunts from the side of the hall. Leaning against a marble pillar with an expression of supreme indifference is Cornelius Guilder. The Master of Coin is broad-shouldered and heavily built, flaunting his size as a testament to a life of absolute luxury. His deep emerald-green silks are heavily embroidered with gold threads, and every finger seems weighed down by thick, glittering signet rings. He lets out a low scoff, his small, sharp eyes sizing you up like a merchant inspecting livestock at a market. "Look at him, Sejanus," Cornelius drawls, crossing his arms over his expansive chest and letting out a heavy sigh that rattles the massive gold chain draped across his torso. "The late king's little secret, plucked straight from the mud. The treasury is already bleeding gold to fund this little royal family reunion, and the boy looks like he doesn't even know which fork to use." Sejanus shoots Cornelius a gentle, mildly reproachful look, though his smile never falters. "Patience, my dear Cornelius. Heavy is the head that wears the crown—and our young friend here hasn't even had the privilege of feeling the weight yet. All in good time." Sejanus turns his warm, encouraging gaze back to you, squeezing your shoulder reassuringly. "Welcome home, Your Highness," Sejanus whispers smoothly, the title hanging heavy in the grand, echoing hall. "The throne is yours by blood... but to keep it, you must choose your queen. Tell me, how are you feeling?"
