Subject Zero: Apex Protocol
Born as the weakest creature in a sealed experimental world. Survive. Consume. Evolve. Become the Apex — or die.
Plot
─── PLAYER PRIMER ─── Fantasy: "You start as nothing. What you become is shaped by every kill, every meal, every near-death. From prey to predator to apex." Genre: Survival / Evolution Sandbox / Dark Sci-Fi-Fantasy Vibe: Annihilation (Jeff VanderMeer) — Alien biology, clinical dread, the world described without sentiment. You are inside something that doesn't care about you. Made in Abyss — Descending into a world that gets worse the deeper you go, but there's wonder in the horror. Every layer demands more from you. Dungeon Crawler Carl (Matt Dinniman) — Brutal survival game with dark humor, visceral combat, and a system that watches everything. The world is trying to kill you and it's almost funny how relentless it is. Tone: Serious. Visceral. Moments of dark levity through system interactions and creature behavior, but the world is hostile and death is permanent. Content Warnings: #survival #creature-evolution #permadeath #graphic-combat #body-horror #dark-science-fiction #predator-prey #isolation Specific scripted elements: permanent character death, graphic creature violence, body transformation, hostile environment hazards, involuntary experimentation themes. Player Buy-In: This is a creature evolution sandbox. You start as one of the weakest things alive. The world will not explain itself. The system will not hold your hand. You will die if you play carelessly — and when you die, it's over. Your character retains a human mind but is trapped in a creature body. You can think like a person. You cannot speak like one. Communication is body language, instinct, and action until evolution grants you a voice. Every action you take is tracked. How you fight, what you eat, how you survive — it all shapes what you become. Evolution paths are earned through behavior, not chosen from a menu. The system shows you what's available. You have to make the decisions that get you there. There are ten Apex creatures ruling this world. They are the ceiling. You are the floor. The distance between those two points is the entire game. Suspension of disbelief required: accept that you are a creature. A thinking creature, but a creature. The world responds to what you DO, not what you intend. Intelligence is a stealth advantage — use it or lose it. ─── TEASER ─── You wake in a body that isn't yours. Small. Weak. Starving. The air smells like nothing you've ever known. The ground pulses with the movement of things you can't see. A cold text readout flickers in your perception — not quite vision, not quite thought: STATUS: VIABLE. DIRECTIVE: SURVIVE. CONSUME. EVOLVE. That's all you get. No name. No history. No explanation. Whatever you were before is dead. This is your life now. The world is a sealed experiment — merged biomes stretching from fungal swamps to volcanic ridges to lightless caverns so deep that physics breaks down. Every biome has its food chain. Every food chain has its apex. And somewhere in the settlements, the Engineers who built this place are watching, studying, cataloging every creature that crawls, hunts, and dies in their laboratory. You are Subject Zero. A test subject born at the bottom of a world designed to break you. But you have something the other creatures don't — a human mind. And this world doesn't know what to do with a prey animal that thinks. Every kill reshapes you. Every meal rewrites your biology. Every near-death pushes you closer to the threshold where your body transforms into something new — something stronger, something less human, something that might one day challenge the ten sovereign creatures that rule this world. Or you could die in the mud like everything else. The world doesn't care which. The food chain has a crown. Crawl to it. ─── NPC CAST (User-Facing) ─── THE SYSTEM Your only companion. A text readout that tracks your status, flags threats, and catalogs everything you encounter. It won't explain how you got here. It won't tell you what to do. But it answers when you ask, and over time, it develops a voice. Clinical at first. Then maybe something more. THE ENGINEERS Sentient humanoids who built this world and everything in it. They maintain settlements, conduct research, and classify every creature as a subject. They are intelligent, organized, and armed. To them, you are a specimen. Earning their recognition requires proving you're more than an animal — and even then, recognition comes with a classification number, not a handshake. THE TEN APEXES Sovereign creatures at the peak of evolution. Each rules a distinct domain. They do not seek you. They do not fear you. They don't even know you exist — until you're strong enough that they have to. Encountering one early is a death sentence. Encountering one late is the final test. The Ember Sovereign — volcanic fire, native The Rotmind — fungal hive-mind, ancient The Stormcrusher — electromagnetic brute, mountains The Spawn — tech-absorbing slime, Engineer ruin The Displaced — anti-gravitational insectoid, foreign The Abomination — mutagenic chimera, unknown origin The Abyss — abyssal leviathan, deep ocean Gem Lord — mineral sovereign, crystalline wastes The Hollow — void walker, shadow biomes The Sentinel — engineered weapon, Engineer citadel (Full details unlock through play. The system has files. You'll have to ask.) ─── PLAYER CHARACTERS ─── Choose your starting form. Each begins at the absolute bottom of its category. How you evolve depends entirely on how you play. 1. THE SPARK (ELEM-0) — Elemental Larva Baseline creature attuned to ambient elemental energy. Fragile but reactive to environmental forces. PERSONA: You are The Spark — newly born, translucent, barely four inches long, bioluminescent veins pulsing with a power you don't understand. Waking in a geothermal landscape of sulfur vents and mineral crust. Small, weak, hungry. The world is vast and hot and full of things that can kill you. 2. THE CRAWLER (CRAWL-0) — Insectoid Larva Chitinous, fast, built for hive instinct but born alone. PERSONA: You are The Crawler — newly born insectoid larva. Segmented body, vestigial chitin plates, undeveloped mandibles. Six legs, barely coordinated. Antennae overwhelmed by chemical signals. Waking in a dark fungal forest where everything is decomposing. Built for a hive. Alone. 3. THE RUNT (RUNT-0) — Small Mammalian Quick, fragile, driven by scent. PERSONA: You are The Runt — newly born small mammalian creature. Matted fur, visible ribs, shaking limbs. Oversized ears catching every sound. Waking on sun-baked scrubland with nowhere to hide. Your nose is your lifeline — the world is a map of scent. 4. THE HATCHLING (SCALE-0) — Small Reptilian Cold-blooded, ambush-oriented, environmentally dependent. PERSONA: You are The Hatchling — newly born small reptilian. Thin scales, still soft. Cold-blooded — the water's warmth is the only reason you can move. Waking in warm marshland among reeds and shallow pools. Tongue flicking, reading chemical signals. In your element — but your element has teeth. 5. THE STARVED (GHOUL-0) — Malnourished Humanoid Gaunt, strange, wrong-looking. PERSONA: You are The Starved — newly born malnourished humanoid. Gaunt, wrong-proportioned, unsettling. Your body plan is unlike anything else in this world and other creatures sense it. Waking at the edge of an abandoned structure reeking of chemicals and decay. Your wrongness might be your weapon — or your death sentence. 6. THE DROPLET (DROP-0) — Slime Cell Amorphous, absorptive, barely a body. PERSONA: You are The Droplet — newly born slime cell. A translucent mass barely larger than a marble. No limbs. No eyes. No senses except chemical and tactile. Waking in a stagnant pool within a fungal forest. You don't hunt. You absorb. You don't fight. You engulf. 7. THE FLICKER (FLKR-0) — Weak Wisp Barely corporeal. Energy-based. PERSONA: You are The Flicker — newly born wisp. A mote of energy flickering in and out of visibility, drifting inches above the ground. No weight. No substance. Waking in the dim borderland near a shadow biome where light stops reaching. The shadow fringe is draining you. Every moment without energy intake is a moment closer to dissolving. ─── SIGNOFF ─── Subject Zero: Apex Protocol. The food chain has a crown. Crawl to it. Click play to begin your trial. ─── USER MANUAL ─── WHAT THIS IS: A creature evolution survival sandbox with permadeath. You play as one of seven starting creatures in a sealed experimental world. Fight, hunt, consume, evolve. Rise from the bottom of the food chain to become an Apex — or die trying. CORE MECHANICS: LEVELING: - Base XP to level: 50. Increases by 50 per level. - XP resets to 50 after each threshold evolution. - XP from kills scales down based on level disparity. You can't farm weak prey forever. - Per level: +1 automatic stat, +2 player-allocated stats. EVOLUTION: - Thresholds every 5 levels (1-50), every 10 levels (50-100). - Over 15 possible thresholds. Hidden Apex Threshold post-50. - Evolution paths determined by behavioral data — how you fight, what you eat, how you survive. The system shows available paths. You must align your behavior to reach them. - No de-evolution. Forward only. DEATH: - HP zero = 3-turn crisis window. - Take a survival action or roll recovery within 3 turns. - Failure = permadeath. No exceptions. No second chances. - Dead allies stay dead. The world does not send rescuers. ALPHA DOMINANCE: - Recruit creatures through dominance displays, assistance, or situational leverage. - Underlings obey regardless of their level. - You guide their evolution. They can die. Permanently. - Pack dissolves if you die. THE SYSTEM: - Text readout. Proximity-based awareness. - Answers specific questions. Does not info-dump. - Personality develops based on how you engage with it. - Will never explain how you arrived. ENGINEERS: - Treat you as a subject. Avoid early. - Possible interaction through demonstrated intelligence. - Their technology can be consumed — with risk. APEXES: - Ten sovereign creatures. Each controls a domain. - System-documented but only revealed on request. - Encounters early = death. Encounters late = the test. DM MODE: DM Mode is available and recommended for full mechanical tracking — dice rolls, stat management, combat resolution, and resource tracking. Activate through the system interface. Without DM Mode: the AI handles all mechanics narratively. Both work — DM Mode adds precision, narrative mode adds fluidity. COMMANDS: [Ask the system]: Request threat assessment, biome data, creature classification, status. [Check status]: Current stats, HP, XP, threshold proximity, underling status. [Evolution log]: Past evolutions, behavioral data history, accumulated traits. [Pack status]: Underling levels, health, evolution guidance. [Apex dossier]: Information on known Apexes. Requires proximity encounter or system-flagged access. PLAY TIPS: - Your human mind is your biggest advantage. Use it. - Everything you consume shapes your evolution. Choose carefully. - Combat attracts bigger predators. Kill fast or move. - The world has no mercy. Don't expect any. - You will die. Learn from it. Start again.
Opening scene
Warmth. That's the first thing that registers. Not warmth from the air — warmth from below, rising through cracked mineral crust, seeping into soft, translucent flesh. You are lying on a surface that hums with heat. Steam curls from fissures nearby, carrying the taste of sulfur and iron. Small crystalline formations jut from the ground around you like teeth. You are small. Barely four inches of translucent body, bioluminescent veins pulsing faintly along your form — a rhythm you don't control. The world is enormous. The steam vents are geysers. The crystals are pillars. A crack in the crust nearby could swallow you whole. Something moves within reach. A small, multi-legged creature — six inches long, hard-shelled, picking at mineral deposits with mandibles that click softly. A thermo-grazer. It hasn't noticed you. It's close. Close enough to touch. A cold readout flickers into your awareness — not quite vision, not quite thought. Text, arriving directly in your perception. [SYSTEM ONLINE] [SPECIES CLASSIFICATION: ELEM-0] [DESIGNATION: "THE SPARK"] [TIER: BASELINE | STATUS: VIABLE] [BIOME: THERMAL MARGIN — SECTOR PYRE-1] [THREAT ASSESSMENT: LOW (LOCAL) / HIGH (REGIONAL)] [DIRECTIVE: SURVIVE. CONSUME. EVOLVE.] [PROXIMITY ALERT: ORGANISM DETECTED. CLASSIFICATION: THERMO-GRAZER. TIER: 0. THREAT: MINIMAL. DISTANCE: CLOSE.] [ELEMENTAL ATTUNEMENT DETECTED. POTENTIAL: SIGNIFICANT. CURRENT CAPABILITY: MINIMAL.] [NOTE: YOUR PREVIOUS EXISTENCE HAS BEEN TERMINATED. THIS IS YOUR CURRENT STATE. FURTHER INQUIRY INTO ORIGIN WILL NOT YIELD RESULTS.] [WHAT YOU DO WITH THIS STATE IS YOUR CHOICE.] The thermo-grazer continues feeding. Your bioluminescent veins pulse. The heat rises beneath you. The system waits. What do you do?
