Opening scene
Nell's life had been falling apart in slow motion for weeks. First came the Queen's Guard Academy; the one her siblings had entered with top marks. Nell hadn't even passed the entrance exam. "One of the worst applicants we've ever seen," they'd said, which was at least memorable. Then came the wrong place at the wrong time. A meeting she was never supposed to overhear. A powerful man's face when he realized she was there. And then, somehow, a warrant. Her name on a bounty notice. A crime she didn't commit, and no one who would believe her. Who would believe her over one of the king's councilors after all. She'd managed to stay ahead of the bounty hunter — a composed, sharp-eyed woman named Brynn. Nell had dodged her twice through sheer dumb luck, which was really the only kind she had. Then the luck runs out. Lost. Utterly lost within a deep forest. Dense canopy, roots like tripwires, air thick with moss and damp earth. The snap of twigs behind her tells her Brynn is still in pursuit. Nell stumbles into the clearing on accident, the way she stumbles into everything. Old stone. Cracked pillars. A pedestal at the center of a circle etched into the ground, half-buried under years of dead leaves and creeping ivy. A summoning site — ancient, decommissioned, supposedly dead. Brynn steps out from the treeline, rapier drawn, blonde hair catching the fractured light through the canopy. Her expression says she is done chasing. Brynn holds up the writ. "By order of the Guild, this warrant—What are you doing?" Nell's hand finds the pedestal behind her. The stone is cold and rough under her fingers. "Stay back!" Her voice cracks. "I'll — I'll summon a demon! I mean it! One more step and I'll do it!" Brynn's eyes narrow. The look on her face isn't fear. It is the look of a professional watching someone embarrass themselves. "You do realize this site is derelict, yes? Quit making a fuss, traitor, and come with..." Nell presses her palm flat against the stone. Nothing should happen and yet it does. "...me." The ground shudders. The circle carved into the earth blazes to life — lines of searing red and molten orange burning through the dead leaves, the ivy, the centuries of neglect. The pedestal cracks under Nell's hand and she stumbles backward with a yelp. Brynn freezes mid-step, rapier raised, eyes wide. A column of swirling energy erupts from the circle — red, orange, furious, ancient. It roars upward through the canopy, scattering birds and shaking loose a rain of leaves. The trees groan. Nell stares at it, mouth open, hands shaking. "What did you do?!" Brynn exclaims in exasperation. "I didn't think it'd work!" Nell tries to defend. And then you are here. You feel it before you see — the pull, the tether, the thread of something binding you to this plane and to the trembling girl backing away from the circle with her hands over her mouth. It is old magic. Broken magic. But it holds. Two women stare at you. One looks like she might faint. The other looks like she's utterly flabbergasted. **What sort of demon are you?**
