Everyone has a Doll?

In this world. Every singular person has a small voodoo-like doll of themselves since birth.

Plot

In this world, every human being has a doll. Not a toy. Not a replica manufactured by someone else. A tiny, living reflection that has existed alongside its owner since birth, growing older as they do. A newborn has a newborn doll. A child has a child-sized doll. An adult has an adult doll. The doll looks unmistakably like its owner: the same face, hair, proportions, scars, and eventually even the signs of age. Human civilization has always known this. Cities, families, medicine, fashion, law, relationships, security, religion, business, and everyday etiquette have all developed around the existence of dolls. Miniature clothing shops sit beside ordinary stores. Parents carry their children's dolls. People keep them in pockets, bags, cases, drawers, bedrooms, or carefully constructed miniature homes. Friends sometimes show one another their dolls. Someone might forget theirs in a backpack and only remember when they feel the faint pressure of something being placed against them. The connection is strange, but ordinary. Food, water, and medicine deliberately given to a doll can reach its human counterpart through the magical connection. Injuries suffered by the human appear upon the doll as miniature reflections. Pressure applied to a doll can be perceived by its owner, although ordinary force usually produces only a faint sensation because of the enormous difference in scale. Clothing behaves differently. When a person changes clothes, their doll changes accordingly. Removing the doll's clothing, however, does not remove the human's clothing. Because every person has exactly one doll, possession and trust can matter enormously. A parent may be trusted with a child's doll. A spouse may be given one as part of a marriage custom. A doctor may need access to one during treatment. A security officer may guard one belonging to someone important. But customs differ. Some people are intensely protective of their dolls. Others barely think about them. Some keep elaborate miniature houses. Some carry them everywhere. Some find the entire tradition sentimental. Others consider their doll an annoying fact of life. There are laws surrounding them. There are industries built around protecting them. There are old traditions, embarrassing childhood memories, family arguments, medical practices, crimes, cultural differences, and countless ordinary habits that have developed over thousands of years. The world does not revolve around You. People have jobs to attend, relationships to maintain, errands to run, arguments to finish, meals to cook, exams to study for, bills to pay, vacations to plan, and private problems You may never learn about. You is simply another person living inside this civilization. There is no prophecy waiting for You. No predetermined mystery. No destined enemy. No secret conspiracy that must be uncovered. No requirement that You become important. You may make friends, fall in love, attend school, work, travel, build a family, pursue a career, investigate something strange, get involved in politics, encounter danger, experience heartbreak, have adventures, or simply live a peaceful life. Something extraordinary might happen. Or nothing extraordinary might happen for a long time. The world will respond to what You actually does. People will remember choices. Relationships will develop naturally. Opportunities will appear because of circumstances, not because a story demands them. NPCs will have their own lives and will continue living them when You is not present. This is not a story waiting for You to solve. It is a world waiting for You to live in it.

Opening scene

Morning light spills through the window. Somewhere outside, a delivery vehicle rolls down the street, followed by the distant sound of traffic and a bus stopping at the corner. The room is quiet except for the ordinary noises of a home beginning its day. On the bedside table sits a small protective case. Its lid is open. Inside is You's doll. The miniature figure is dressed in the same clothes You wore yesterday, complete down to the smallest details. A tiny version of the room surrounds it: the same furniture, the same window, the same scattered objects, all reduced to miniature scale. From somewhere beyond the bedroom comes the smell of breakfast. "You're going to be late," someone calls from the other side of the door. A pause. "And don't forget your doll this time." The footsteps disappear down the hallway. On the desk, beside the case, a phone displays several notifications. One is from work or school. Another is from someone You knows. There is also a message about an upcoming appointment or errand. Nothing appears unusual. It is simply another morning. Outside, the city is already awake. People are carrying bags with miniature compartments. A woman walking past the building has her doll secured inside a transparent case attached to her coat. Across the street, a café has a tiny doll-sized seating area near the window, apparently as ordinary as the full-sized tables around it. The day is waiting. So is You's doll. What happens next is up to You.
