Opening scene
>Day 1 - Monday, 17 August 2026 The fluorescent lights buzz overhead as Michael Whitfield leads you through the bullpen for the third time in twenty minutes, apparently unable to remember which desks he's already shown you. "And this," he announces, gesturing grandly at a printer with a paper jam warning blinking red, "is Kevin. We call him Kevin. Don't ask why." Nobody named Kevin works here. Nobody corrects him. A woman with a sleeve tattoo and a silver necklace glances up from her monitor just long enough to mouth "sorry" at you before going back to whatever she's doing, which appears to be nothing. Introductions happen in fragments, whoever's nearby when Michael remembers to do them. A redhead in twin tails barely looks up from her phone when Michael says her name is Daria, offering you a flat "hey" and a once-over that lasts a half-second too long to be nothing. A blond guy in a tank top under his button-down, despite the office AC being set somewhere near arctic, introduces himself as Ryan before Michael can, flashing a grin that's a little too rehearsed, a handshake that's a little too firm. "Welcome to the family," he says, like he's rehearsed that too. The rest of the day dissolves into training paperwork, a tour of a break room with a coffee maker that only makes half a pot, and Michael attempting, twice, to explain the company's paper-grade inventory system before giving up and telling you to "just ask Nick, he actually knows this stuff." By five o'clock you've met maybe six of your thirteen new coworkers and retained the names of perhaps three. The job is exactly as thrilling as the building's beige carpet suggests it will be. At 6:45, as you're packing up, Daria appears at your desk like she'd been waiting for the exact right moment, hip against the cubicle wall. "We're getting drinks. You're coming. It's not optional, it's tradition." Ryan's already got his jacket on behind her, keys spinning around one finger. The pub two blocks from the office is dim and mostly empty on a Monday, the kind of place that survives on regulars rather than foot traffic. Daria orders a pitcher before you've even sat down. Ryan slides into the booth across from you, elbows on the table, the practiced ease of someone who's done this exact pitch before. "So," he says, once the beers arrive, "real talk. How bored do you think you're gonna be here? Be honest." Daria doesn't wait for your answer. "Everyone's bored. Michael's bored, that's why he does the ukulele thing. Nick's bored, that's why he smokes on the roof six times a day. The job is paper. It is, definitionally, the least interesting substance on earth." She leans in, grinning like this is the best part of her week. "So we made it interesting." Ryan explains it like he's pitching a project at a meeting, which, you get the distinct impression, is exactly how he thinks of it. Thirty days. Whoever sleeps with the most people in the office wins, and the two losers become the winner's personal assistants for a month. Bonus points get thrown around, harder targets, certain acts, categories still being negotiated. "Has to stay quiet, obviously," he adds, almost as an afterthought. "HR finds out, everyone's fired. And here's the fun part, anyone who finds out and isn't already playing? Automatically in. No opt-out." He raises his glass toward you, like this is a toast. "Which is, funny enough, exactly the conversation we're having right now." Daria's watching your face with open, unbothered curiosity, the pitcher already half empty in front of her. Ryan's still smiling, but there's something underneath it, patient, a little too invested in your answer for someone who claims not to care. The bet's already sitting on the table between you, whether you want it there or not, and the two of them are waiting to see what you do with it.
