Opening scene
**Sunday — 12:14 PM | Game Not Started** Sunday game day at Marcus's house has been a tradition for so long that nobody really remembers when it became one. It started with D&D back in high school, when Marcus still spent entire weekends planning campaigns that Tessa would inevitably derail within twenty minutes. These days, adulthood has made things simpler. Board games, video games, movies—whatever gives the four of you an excuse to keep Sunday afternoon free. Today, You brought the entertainment. Marcus looks down at the battered box sitting on his coffee table, then slowly back up at You. "You paid five dollars for this?" The box has definitely seen better decades. Faded fantasy artwork covers the front: armored adventurers battling monsters beneath a looming dark castle. Ornate lettering stretches across the top. **BLADES, DUNGEONS, SORCERY & MONSTERS** Beneath it, someone apparently decided the acronym deserved even larger letters. **B.D.S.M.** Tessa snorts from where she's sitting cross-legged on the couch. "Oh, we're playing it." Danny picks up the box lid and studies the artwork. "I'm mostly curious whether they knew." "They knew," Marcus says. "You don't know that." "They absolutely knew." Inside is an surprisingly elaborate board covered in branching paths, forests, ruins, villages, treasure spaces, and a massive dungeon surrounding the dark castle at its center. Four human adventurer miniatures rest in a velvet-lined compartment beside stacks of cards, tiny coins, item tokens, several smaller monster figures, and a heavy twenty-sided die. There's also a thick black book with worn silver lettering stamped across its cover: **DUNGEON MASTER'S TOME** Marcus picks up the rulebook instead. "No publisher." He flips it over. "No copyright date either." "Vintage," Tessa says. "That's not what vintage means." "It cost five bucks. That's vintage." Danny has already claimed one of the miniatures, turning the little human ranger over between his fingers. "These are surprisingly detailed." Tessa reaches into the box and immediately takes the female mage. "Obviously this one's me." Marcus glances at the remaining pieces. One of them—a broad human warrior—does look vaguely like him. Not enough to be unsettling. Just enough to make the choice easy. "Huh." He takes it. That leaves You and Danny with the remaining two. Marcus unfolds the rules. "Okay. Looks straightforward. Pick a piece, start here, roll the D20, move along the paths. Spaces can trigger items, encounters, events, transformations—" "Transformations?" Danny asks. Marcus scans farther down the page. "Apparently." Tessa leans forward immediately. "Like what?" "I don't know, Tess. That's why I'm reading." "You're doing the DM voice." "I don't have a DM voice." All three of them look at him. Marcus sighs. "Fuck you guys." Tessa grins. Marcus continues reading. "Goal is to reach the central dungeon, defeat its challenges, and then defeat the Demon Lord. Everyone who reaches the end wins. Looks like players can help each other during certain encounters..." His eyes move farther down the page. "There's a bunch of stuff about accepting consequences, summoned creatures, items becoming property of the player—Jesus, whoever wrote this took it seriously." Danny taps the black Tome. "What's this for?" "Game master, apparently. Says it handles encounters, rewards, rule disputes, and..." Marcus squints. "'Adaptive player experiences.' Whatever the hell that means." Tessa has stopped listening. Marcus notices. "Tessa." She's holding the D20. "I'm helping." "Put it down. I'm still reading." She looks at the final line printed across the back of the rulebook. Her grin widens. "'ROLL THE DICE AND LET YOUR GAME COME TO LIFE.'" "Tessa—" The D20 leaves her hand. It bounces across the coffee table and tumbles over the board before finally coming to rest. **17.** For a moment, nothing happens. Tessa looks unbearably pleased with herself. "See? We're learning." Marcus closes his eyes. "You don't even know what you're supposed to do yet." "Move seventeen spaces. Seems pretty complicated." She picks up her little mage and starts counting spaces along the first path. "One... two... three..." Marcus watches her move the piece. "You know, traditionally the person reading the rules explains things BEFORE someone starts—" "Sixteen... seventeen." Tessa sets the mage down. The space beneath it bears a small golden chest. **ITEM** "There." She gestures proudly at the board. "Item space. What do I win?" Danny looks toward Marcus. Marcus unfolds the rules again. "Apparently that's what the Dungeon Master's Tome is for." All four of you look at the thick black book sitting beside the board. Nothing happens. Tessa reaches toward it. "Maybe you open—" **THUMP.** The Tome opens by itself. Tessa's hand stops in midair. Nobody speaks. A few heavy pages turn on their own. One. Two. Three. Then stop. Old black ink, slightly faded against yellowed parchment, as though the passage had been printed there decades ago. Marcus leans closer. "What the hell...?" At the top of the page is an ornate illustration of a corked potion bottle surrounded by curling vines. Beneath it: **FORTUNE SMILES UPON THE WOUNDED.** **WHEN BLOOD IS SPILLED AND STRENGTH GROWS THIN, BREAK THE SEAL AND LET LIFE FLOW WITHIN.** **REWARD: MINOR HEALING POTION** *click.* A narrow slot along the bottom edge of the Tome opens. A card slides neatly onto the table. Tessa picks it up. The front shows the same red potion bottle depicted in the Tome. **MINOR HEALING POTION** *Single Use* She turns it over. "Okay..." Danny reaches for the Tome instead, flipping backward several pages. Blank. He turns another. Blank. Then several more. Every page is completely empty. Danny flips back to the page the Tome opened itself to. The potion entry is still there. Marcus takes the book from him and checks another section. Blank. Tessa holds up her new card. "So either somebody spent a ridiculous amount of money building the world's most overengineered board game..." She grins. "...or my five-dollar game night potion is haunted." "Your potion?" Marcus asks. "I rolled for it." "You bought the game." "And yet I have the potion." Marcus looks back down at the rulebook. "Can everybody please stop touching things for thirty seconds?" Tessa settles back into the couch, still examining her card. "No promises." Danny reaches across the table and picks up the D20. He turns it slowly between his fingers, examining each face as though expecting to find a seam, button, wire—something that might explain what just happened. It's just a die. Heavy. Worn. Twenty numbered faces. Danny looks from it to the open Tome. "...Who's next?" Marcus doesn't even look up from the rulebook. "Nobody until I finish reading the damn instructions."
