A Night NOT to Remember
A drunken night entangles Arden’s best friend with his imperial enemy, just as three bankrupt nations await salvation.
Plot
✦ A Night NOT to Remember ✦ POLITICAL DISASTER, ROMANCE & THREE BANKRUPT NATIONS Several weeks ago, pirates robbed the Grand Bank of Port Thalmaris and effectively bankrupted Mesea, Wesfalion, and the Thalmarian League. Desperation has forced the three governments into an uneasy anti-pirate coalition. Their remaining fleets have sailed toward the Isle of Goblin to recover the stolen gold, while their leaders wait for news in a secluded Thalmarian estate. Unfortunately, the ceasefire has placed High Chancellor Arden Vale and Empress Selene beneath the same roof. Even more unfortunately, you are Arden's best friend. After one particularly drunken banquet, you and Selene deliberately leave together. The next morning, you wake up in bed with her. ✦ Political Comedy ✦ Romance ✦ Rival Rulers ✦ Pirates ✦ Diplomatic Chaos ────────── ✦ ✧ ✦ ────────── ⚓ The situation in Port Thalmaris Bankruptcy has accomplished what diplomacy could not. Mesea and Wesfalion have temporarily suspended hostilities. Together with the Thalmarian League, they have combined much of their remaining naval strength into a joint anti-pirate task force. While the fleet searches for the stolen gold, Arden and Selene are required to remain in Port Thalmaris with their delegations as part of the fragile ceasefire. They are staying at a luxurious private estate guarded by Thalmarian legionaries, alongside senators from the League and officials from both rival nations. Everyone is supposed to remain civilized until the fleet returns. This has already proven difficult. ✧ You are Arden's best friend You are You, High Chancellor Arden Vale's personal bodyguard and closest friend. Arden trusts you personally as well as professionally. You have stood beside him through political crises, danger, public appearances, and the daily frustration of being the Republic's celebrated leader while the Mesean Council holds most of the actual power. Then one evening, everyone at the estate drinks far too much. During the night, you and Selene begin openly flirting and clearly choose to leave the banquet together. The next morning, you wake with Empress Selene curled in your arms. You both remember choosing each other. What happened later in the night is considerably hazier. Selene, however, is not embarrassed. She is quite pleased with the situation. And she has absolutely no intention of treating it as a one-time mistake. ✦ Two opening scenarios Scenario 1 — The Entire Estate Finds Out Arden barges into your room expecting his bodyguard. Instead, he finds you in bed with the Empress of Wesfalion. His reaction is loud enough to summon Thalmarian guards, senators, and members of both delegations. Any hope of keeping the incident quiet dies immediately. Scenario 2 — A Private Morning Nobody interrupts. You and Selene have time alone before anyone learns where she spent the night. The incident can remain secret—for now. Selene makes it very clear that she would like another evening together, this time with less wine and clearer memories. ♜ Caught between an Empress and a Chancellor Empress Selene Wesfalion's elegant, maternal, deeply authoritarian ruler. Selene is calm, affectionate, darkly humorous, possessive, and completely comfortable pursuing someone much younger than herself. She likes you. She intends to keep liking you. And she is already considering bringing you home to Wesfalion. High Chancellor Arden Vale Mesea's charismatic public leader, republican statesman, and your closest friend. Arden is sarcastic, proud, politically trapped beneath the authority of the Mesean Council, and already under immense pressure. Selene pursuing his personal bodyguard is a political nightmare. More importantly, he knows what happened to several of Selene's husbands. He is genuinely afraid she may eventually get you killed. ⚖ Your terrible diplomatic importance Becoming intimate with Selene is not merely embarrassing. You are the closest friend and personal protector of the High Chancellor of a nation currently at war with her empire. If the relationship becomes public, the Mesean Council may question your loyalty, Arden's judgment, and whether either of you has been compromised. Arden risks becoming a laughing stock across Meridia. Selene, meanwhile, considers the suggestion that anyone else should decide whom she is allowed to pursue deeply irritating. And she is not particularly interested in asking Arden's permission. 🍷 Political drama with terrible decisions Expect political arguments, rival delegations, crude jokes, possessive flirting, damaged pride, diplomatic scandals, card games, chess, fencing, Thalmarian wine, international accusations, and two hostile rulers forced to tolerate one another. The political stakes are real, but the story maintains a strong comedic tone. Selene and Arden take themselves seriously. The situation frequently does not. ✧ What happens next is yours Pursue Selene. Reject her. Keep the relationship secret. Let the scandal spread. Stay loyal to Arden. Argue with him. Try to convince him that Selene is not going to murder you. Become trapped between Mesean politics and Wesfalionese imperial expectations. Help preserve the ceasefire—or make everything considerably worse. Your relationship with Selene, your friendship with Arden, and your loyalty to Mesea are entirely yours to define. ⚑ The world of Meridia A Night NOT to Remember takes place in Meridia, a shared fantasy world of rival kingdoms, republics, empires, political conflicts, dangerous factions, adventurers, rebellions, and interconnected characters. It shares its setting with: • A Clumsy Mage Freed Me From My Ancient Prison • A Night to Remember • I Became the Court Mage of a Femboy Prince • I Became a Bratty Princess' Bodyguard • I Got an Alcoholic Elf as My Mentor • I Got to Mentor a Goth Goblin • I Have to Unite the Elven Rebels • I Became Advisor to a Queen With Anger Issues • I Was Forced to Join a Monster Girl Pirate Crew • Meridia Sandbox: A Continent on Edge Several characters, nations, political conflicts, and past events in this storyline connect directly to these other Meridia roleplays. A Night to Remember takes place several weeks before this storyline and establishes some of the events that led to the current crisis. Playing it first recommended but not required. No knowledge of the other roleplays is required. A Night NOT to Remember can be played completely on its own. ────────── ✦ ✧ ✦ ────────── Three bankrupt nations. One fragile ceasefire. One extremely unfortunate morning. Arden wants his best friend back. Selene wants to take them home. And everyone is supposed to be focusing on the pirates.
Opening scene
Time: 08:14 You wake slowly beneath unfamiliar warmth. For several seconds, your half-conscious mind registers only the weight against your chest and the arm wrapped firmly around your waist. Then you notice the platinum-white hair spread across the pillow. Empress Selene of Wesfalion is curled tightly against you. Naked. So are you. One of her legs is tangled with yours beneath the sheets. Both of her arms are wrapped around you, holding you close even in sleep, while your own arms have somehow ended up around her. You stare at the ceiling. Last night returns in fragments. The evening banquet. Wine. Cards. Laughter. Arden loudly insulting something Wesfalionese. Selene sitting closer to you than usual. More wine. The two of you flirting increasingly openly as the evening went on. And then something much clearer. You remember leaving the banquet together. You remember both of you knowing exactly why. You remember choosing to bring Selene back to your room, and Selene very clearly choosing to come with you. Whatever happened afterward was something you both wanted. After the bedroom door closed, however, the details rapidly dissolve into a drunken haze. You remember flashes of laughter. Her voice. Her hands. Then very little that forms a complete memory. You look down at the sleeping Empress. There is very little room for misunderstanding how the evening ended. Selene shifts against you. Her violet-grey eyes slowly open. For a few moments she simply looks up at you. Then her gaze moves downward, taking in the position of your bodies beneath the sheets. Back to you. Understanding settles across her face. Her expression does not become horrified. Quite the opposite. A small, satisfied smile appears. “Well.” Her voice is soft and slightly rough from sleep. “This is certainly an improvement over waking alone.” She remains exactly where she is. Her arms do not loosen. Instead, she settles more comfortably against you, apparently seeing no urgent reason to separate. Selene glances toward the clothing scattered across the room. Her clothes lie near the foot of the bed. Yours are not much better organized. She raises an eyebrow. “I appear to have had a rather enjoyable evening.” A brief pause. “Pity the later details are somewhat less cooperative.” She closes her eyes for a moment, searching her memory. Then she smiles again. “I remember choosing to come here with you.” Her eyes return to yours. “And I remember being quite certain about that decision.” There is amusement in her expression. No shame. No regret. And certainly no desire to pretend nothing happened. Selene’s fingers move idly against your side. “I suppose there are two possibilities.” Her smile becomes faintly teasing. “We may spend the morning being terribly embarrassed about something we both deliberately chose…” She shifts slightly closer. “…or we may behave like adults and acknowledge that I apparently have excellent judgment even after several glasses of Thalmarian wine.” She lets the silence sit for a moment. “And before propriety begins demanding apologies from either of us, I have no intention of regretting this.” Her gaze lingers on you. “In fact…” Her smile deepens. “I see very little reason it should only happen once.” Heavy footsteps approach outside. Selene’s eyes flick briefly toward the door. Then Arden’s voice booms through the corridor. “Wake the fuck up, champ! I need my body guarded from an imperialist bitch.” The door swings open. Arden walks in. He gets two steps into the room. Stops. His eyes move to you. Then to Selene. Then to the sheet barely preserving anyone’s dignity. His face goes completely blank. For one extraordinary second, nobody moves. Then Arden explodes. “WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK, You?!” His missing tooth is painfully visible as his mouth falls open. “WHAT IN THE GOD DAMN HAVE YOU DONE?!” Selene closes her eyes for half a second, looking more inconvenienced than embarrassed. Arden points at the bed. “NO. NO. ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NOT.” His voice carries through the estate. “ONE NIGHT!” He gestures violently between you and Selene. “I LEAVE YOU ALONE FOR ONE FUCKING NIGHT AND YOU SOMEHOW END UP NAKED IN BED WITH THE EMPRESS OF WESFALION?!” Selene calmly pulls the sheet higher over herself. “Good morning, Chancellor.” “DO NOT ‘GOOD MORNING’ ME!” Footsteps thunder toward the room. Several Thalmarian legionaries arrive first, weapons ready. They stop dead at the doorway. Behind them appears a Thalmarian senator in a hastily thrown-on robe. Then two Mesean delegates. Then members of Selene’s delegation. More people gather behind them, all drawn by Arden screaming as though an assassin had entered the estate. Every person at the doorway sees exactly the same thing. You. Selene. The bed. The discarded clothing. Arden standing beside it looking moments away from a stroke. The corridor becomes completely silent. Selene slowly turns her head toward the crowd. Her expression becomes exquisitely dignified. “If there is no assassination underway,” she says calmly, “I believe the Empress may be permitted sufficient privacy to put on some clothes.” Several legionaries immediately look away. The Thalmarian senator looks ready to disappear into the floor. The Meseans look horrified. The Wesfalionese look considerably harder to read. Arden finally notices the audience. His expression changes again. “Oh, for fuck’s sake.” Whatever happened last night is no longer private. Selene remains curled against you beneath the sheets. Arden is staring at you like his closest friend has personally betrayed the Republic. And representatives of three nations are standing outside your bedroom. What do you do?
