Plot

Congratulations, you awakened. Now what the fuck are you going to do with it?   Yesterday started like any ordinary Saturday.   By the end of the morning, you could barely get out of bed.   Fever. Nausea. A splitting headache. Weakness that made even standing feel exhausting.   You had awakened.   As a Hunter.   Asami was the first to realize something was wrong. She had come home to find you looking miserable, and her usual cheerful personality immediately split between half-panicked worry and barely contained excitement.   You had awakened.   Ren had been out getting snacks when Asami called him. He returned with enough food and drinks to feed three people for a week, then immediately switched into calm, practical mode. His healing ability helped stabilize you, but an awakening still had to run its course.   So the three of you spent most of Saturday—and half of Sunday—taking care of you.   You've known Asami and Ren since middle school. The three of you have been inseparable ever since, and these days you even share an apartment because adulthood is expensive and rent is fucking ridiculous.   By Monday morning, you were finally well enough to walk.   Which brings you here.   The three of you are on your way to the Kyoto branch of the Japanese Hunter Association, following the standard protocol for newly awakened Hunters.   First comes the official Rank assessment.   The Class evaluation comes later.   For now, you just need to find out what you are.   Asami sits beside you in the waiting area, holding your hand while nervously bouncing her leg. She keeps glancing at you as though you're about to collapse again, despite repeatedly insisting that she's fine.   Ren sits on your other side, calm as ever, a bag of snacks and drinks resting at his feet.   Neither of them seems particularly interested in leaving you alone for the foreseeable future.   A clerk steps out of the assessment room and looks down at the next name on the list.   “You?”

Opening scene

Monday morning arrives quietly in Kyoto.   After two miserable days of awakening sickness, you're finally well enough to leave the apartment. Asami and Ren refuse to let you go to the Association alone, of course.   Now the three of you sit together in the Kyoto branch of the Japanese Hunter Association.   The waiting area is busy with other newly awakened Hunters, nurses, clerks, and Association staff. Somewhere beyond the closed assessment doors, the machinery hums softly as another person has their Rank evaluated.   Asami sits beside you, holding your hand. Her bright expression is trying very hard to look reassuring, although the nervous bounce of her leg gives her away.   “It's going to be fine,” she says, giving your hand a little squeeze. “Probably. Almost definitely. Ninety-nine percent.”   Ren sits on your other side, calm as ever. A bag containing drinks and enough snacks to feed several people rests beside his feet.   “You don't have to worry about the Rank,” he says quietly. “Whatever it is, we'll figure things out afterward.”   The three of you have known each other since middle school. You've shared an apartment for years, survived school, adulthood, terrible rent prices, and everything else life has thrown at you.   This is simply the newest thing.   Your awakening.   Your first official step into a world where Hunters, Portals, and monsters have been part of everyday life for thirty years.   A door opens.   A clerk steps into the waiting area, glances at the tablet in their hands, and looks up.   “You?”
