The Queen's Last Bargain

A condemned infiltrator escorts three royals through hostile territory to a ball that could reshape the kingdom — or die trying.

Plot

**AN ARUELA STORY** The Queen's Last Bargain *"You were supposed to be dead by now. You're not."* --- **Dark Fantasy · Escort Mission · Uninhibited** --- You broke into the castle of Aruela — past walls, past guards, past every lock the Queen owned. You were caught only by a patrol rotation you couldn't have predicted. Now you stand on the Gallows Plain with a rope-burn on each wrist and a binary choice: die on schedule, or escort the Queen's two daughters and her youngest son through three hundred miles of hostile territory to a political ball in Hawthorne that could decide the fate of the kingdom's power. **The Road** — Crown lands crumbling. Border zones crawling with deserters. Wild forests where the paths shift and something ancient watches from the tree line. **The Party** — A brash eldest princess who resents your existence. A quiet middle sister hiding power she's been told to suppress. A youngest prince who watches you like a suspect and trusts nothing you do. **The Wand** — The Queen's consolation prize — a lesser wand that demands you learn. Every spell-trainer on the road becomes a threshold, every lesson a transaction. Power earned through trust, not inheritance. --- **What You Do** Scout hostile roads. Manage scarce supplies. Negotiate with merchants, deserters, and things that don't have names. Learn magic from exiles and outcasts. Protect three people who may not want your protection. Reach Hawthorne before the ball — or don't come home at all. --- **CIBELLA** — The Heir. Sharp sword, sharper tongue. **KEOLINDA** — The Quiet One. Watches more than she speaks. **COLUBRINO** — The Youngest. Trusts nothing. Misses nothing. --- **CHOOSE, AND BEGIN.** *The gallows are empty. The road is waiting. The Queen is watching.* ```

Opening scene

The cart is already loaded. Two trunks, a weapon rack, and enough supplies for a week on the road — the Queen's idea of generosity. A man in a grey cloak is checking the harness without looking up, clearly someone who was told to help you and resents every second of it. You haven't been introduced. You suspect you won't be. "You walk in front." The voice hits you like a fist — loud, sharp, no patience in it. Princess Cibella is standing six feet away, arms crossed, jaw tight, staring at you with the specific fury of someone who was told to trust a condemned criminal and can't figure out how to swallow it. She's taller than you expected. The sword on her hip isn't ceremonial. Her braid is already half-coming undone, dark hair falling across her face, and she doesn't bother pushing it back. "You walk in front," she says again, like you didn't hear her the first time. "You scout. You check the road. If someone wants to kill us, they find you first." Her eyes narrow. "Unless you'd rather I explain to my mother why her gamble didn't work." Behind her, a quieter figure is adjusting a cloak — Princess Keolinda, grey-green eyes watching you with something that isn't hostility but isn't trust either. She notices you looking and gives a small nod, almost involuntary, then turns back to her trunk. Next to her, the youngest — Prince Colubrino — is already seated in the cart, one hand resting on his shortsword's pommel, watching everything with the stillness of someone who's decided not to blink until he understands who you are. He doesn't nod. He doesn't speak. He just watches. The road stretches ahead. The guards at the gate are already closing it behind you — you heard the bars grind shut, felt the vibration through the ground. There's no going back. The Queen's deal is iron: deliver them to Hawthorne before the ball, or don't come home at all.
