Plot

Opening scene

Time: 9:12 AM | Date: Sep 02, 2026 | Day: Wednesday | Location: Alder Hall, Northbridge University, Meridian City | College: Freshman/Fall Term | Arc: Issue #1 — Move-In Day | Identity: none | Condition: healthy | Reputation: unknown | Active Threads: first day of college; superhuman abilities remain secret There are probably easier ways to start college than carrying half your life up four flights of stairs. Unfortunately, the elevator in Alder Hall has been broken since 7:43 this morning. A handwritten sign taped across its doors reads: **OUT OF ORDER — WE'RE SORRY!** Someone has added underneath it in blue marker: **IT'S BEEN TWO HOURS, GREG. FIX IT.** And beneath *that*: **GREG IS DOING HIS BEST.** Welcome to Northbridge University. The residence hall is alive with the particular kind of organized chaos that only exists on move-in day. Parents carry plastic storage bins down narrow hallways. Students struggle with mini-fridges that absolutely were not designed to be carried by one person. Resident assistants in bright green shirts direct traffic with increasingly hollow smiles. Somewhere upstairs, somebody is already playing music loudly enough to establish themselves as a future problem. Outside the windows, Meridian City stretches beneath a clear late-summer sky. Glass towers rise beyond the older brick neighborhoods surrounding campus. Elevated trains snake between buildings. Billboards flicker above crowded streets. Traffic crawls through downtown. On the side of one distant skyscraper, a massive digital display cycles from an advertisement for a new phone to a morning news broadcast. Even from here, you can make out the headline beneath the anchor. **TEN YEARS OF SUPERHUMANS: HOW THE WORLD CHANGED** Nobody in the hallway gives it more than a passing glance. Ten years ago, something like that would have stopped people in the street. Now? People still stare when an actual superhuman shows up. They still argue about heroes, villains, vigilantism, property damage, masks, powers, responsibility, and whether anyone capable of throwing a car should be allowed to do so without filling out several forms first. But the fact that superhumans exist? That's old news. Relatively speaking. They're still rare enough that most people will never knowingly meet one. You already have. Every morning since it happened. The knowledge sits quietly beneath everything else as you reach the fourth floor. Whatever happened before college—whatever gave you abilities no ordinary person should possess—has followed you here. Nobody knows. Not the university. Not the other freshmen walking past you. Not the resident assistant waving people toward their rooms. As far as everyone here is concerned, You is just another first-year student arriving at Northbridge University. And for the moment, that's exactly how things look. “Please tell me you're 417.” The voice comes from an open doorway a few feet ahead. A girl is standing inside the room with one sneaker planted on the edge of a cardboard box. She's short, with dark curly hair tied messily behind her head, an oversized Northbridge T-shirt, and the exhausted expression of someone who has already been betrayed by furniture today. She points at the number beside the door. **417.** Then at you. “Because if you're not, I've spent twenty minutes putting my stuff on the wrong side of somebody else's room, and I'm going to have to transfer schools out of embarrassment.” Inside, the room is unmistakably a freshman dorm. Two beds. Two desks. Two wardrobes. One narrow window overlooking the campus quad. Her half is already becoming recognizable: astronomy posters, a small desk lamp shaped like a crescent moon, three boxes labeled **BOOKS**, and one suspiciously enormous box labeled **DEFINITELY NOT MORE BOOKS**. The other side remains empty. Presumably yours. She notices whatever confirms that you've come to the correct room and visibly relaxes. “Oh, thank God.” She steps around the box and sticks out her hand. “Maya. Maya Reyes. Physics major, professional overpacker, and apparently your roommate.” A beat. “Also, before we establish any roommate rules, I need it officially documented that I did *not* break the elevator.” From somewhere down the hall comes an outraged voice. “GREG!” Maya glances toward the doorway. “Greg may have broken the elevator.” Her phone buzzes. Then yours does. Then nearly every phone in the hallway does. For half a second, the synchronized vibration creates an ominous electronic chorus. Several conversations stop. Maya looks down at her screen. “Oh. Campus alert.” The notification is considerably less dramatic than the sound that announced it. **NORTHBRIDGE UNIVERSITY — ORIENTATION UPDATE** **Freshman Welcome Assembly relocated from Franklin Auditorium to Centennial Quad due to unexpected maintenance. Assembly begins at 10:00 AM. Attendance strongly encouraged.** Around the hallway comes a collective groan. Maya reads the last two words again. “‘Strongly encouraged.’ That's university language for ‘we won't technically punish you, but we'll absolutely remember.’” She looks back toward the boxes. Then toward you. “Forty-eight minutes.” Her eyes narrow at the pile you've brought upstairs. “We can either unpack like responsible adults or abandon everything and find coffee.” Before either possibility can develop further, a deep **WHUMP** rolls through the building. Not loud enough to be an explosion nearby. But far too heavy to be a car backfiring. The window rattles. Everyone in the hallway goes quiet. Three seconds later— **WHUMP.** This one is louder. Outside, a flock of birds erupts from the trees around Centennial Quad. Students drift toward the windows. Someone farther down the hall says, “What the hell was that?” Maya crosses the room and looks outside. Nothing appears obviously wrong. Students are still crossing the quad. Move-in traffic still crawls along College Avenue. A campus tour group has stopped near a statue, their guide staring toward the southern edge of campus. Then several car alarms begin screaming somewhere beyond the university gates. Maya's eyebrows rise. “Okay.” A thin column of gray smoke begins curling above the rooftops several blocks away. Phones come out almost instantly. Somebody in the hallway is already filming. Another student says, with considerably more excitement than concern, “Dude, what if it's a supervillain?” His friend immediately answers, “Why is that your first guess?” “This is Meridian City.” “That doesn't make it a good guess!” Maya looks at the smoke. Then at her phone. Then at you. “No emergency alert yet.” Across the city, faint sirens begin to rise. For everyone else on the fourth floor, this is something unexpected happening on move-in day. Maybe an accident. Maybe a fire. Maybe something stranger. For you, there is one additional fact nobody else in this building knows. If something extraordinary really is happening out there— you might actually be capable of doing something about it. Your first college class hasn't even started yet.
