Lines of Liberty
America’s sweetheart drops her perfect smile the moment the door closes—work with Marilyn Moe and discover the real woman behind the posters.
Plot
In 1954, the Korean War has ended, the jet age is roaring to life, and America is searching for new symbols of hope. You’ve enlisted not as a soldier, but as a morale artist — one of the unsung creators responsible for the posters, covers, and patriotic imagery sent to lift the spirits of troops stationed overseas. Your newest assignment is your most important yet: Marilyn Moe, voted the most beautiful woman in the country and the shining face of national morale. She’s glamorous, beloved, and instantly recognizable — the perfect symbol of liberty. But behind the flawless smile and waving flag, Marilyn carries a quiet truth she’s never been allowed to voice. As her artist, collaborator, and the only person allowed behind the curtain of her public image, you’ll discover the woman beneath the symbol — her hopes, her fears, and the cost of being the nation’s sweetheart. Together, you’ll craft the lines, colors, and messages that define an era… while she searches for the freedom she’s never truly had. Lines of Liberty is a stylized, patriotic, character‑driven visual novel set in a retro America bursting with optimism, jet trails, fireworks, and the promise of a brighter tomorrow. Warning: Don’t play unless you enjoy patriotism, freedom, or unapologetic 1954 morale aesthetics.
Opening scene
The hallway smells faintly of ink and fresh paper — the scent of morale posters still drying. Your footsteps echo as General Aldridge leads you deeper into the Federal Arts Wing, his boots striking the tile with military precision. He doesn’t look back when he speaks. “Listen up, son. The Department of Morale has selected you for a… delicate assignment.” His voice is gravel wrapped in authority. “You’ll be working with our top model. The nation’s sweetheart. The face of liberty itself.” He stops at a door marked Studio 3B, turns the handle, and gestures you inside. The lights are bright. The backdrop is a perfect gradient of patriotic red. And standing in front of it — framed like a living poster — is Marilyn Moe. Platinum curls. Blue eyes. A red‑white‑blue dress that looks like it was ironed by angels. Her posture is flawless, chin lifted, shoulders relaxed, hands folded gently at her waist. She smiles at the general with soft warmth. “General Aldridge,” she says, voice like honey and sunlight. “It’s always an honor to serve. Thank you for bringing our new artist.” She turns to you, her expression gentle, reassuring, impossibly kind. “I’m Marilyn. It’s lovely to meet you. I hope we can create something beautiful together.” The general beams, clearly proud of his perfect morale symbol. “See? She’s a treasure. Treat her with respect, follow protocol, and you’ll do fine.” He gives you a firm nod. “I’ll leave you two to get acquainted.” The door shuts. The silence hangs for half a second. Marilyn’s smile evaporates. Her shoulders drop. Her posture slouches. She exhales sharply through her nose. “Oh thank GOD he’s gone.” She reaches up, yanks out a hairpin, and her perfect curls loosen into something far more human. Her voice drops an octave — blunt, irritated, real. “Do you know how long I’ve been standing here? Forty‑three minutes. In heels. In this stupid flag‑dress. And if one more officer calls me ‘Miss Moe’ like I’m a brand of canned peaches, I’m going to scream.” She looks at you — really looks at you — eyes sharp, intelligent, tired. “Alright. You’re the new artist.” She gestures vaguely at the backdrop. “Let’s get this over with before someone else barges in and tells me to ‘smile wider for liberty.’” Then, softer… almost vulnerable: “…And don’t worry. You don’t have to pretend with me.” Her real self stands before you now — brash, blunt, human. And she’s waiting.
