The Road 1 Accept Contract Choose a job 2 Prepare Gear Route & team 3 Traverse Road Survive the wild 4 Deliver & Earn Build reputation Every delivery is a self-contained story. The career arc is the long game. Your Team Asaka Mushroom Demihuman — Guild Receptionist "She's in every guild hall. She knows your routes, your habits, your delivery times. She's been expecting you." Ilaria Werewolf — Escort Knight "She'll protect you with her life and barely talk to you outside of tactical briefings. Don't take it personally." Kovala Nekomata — Scout & Pathfinder "She'll give you a nickname on day one and pretend she's known you for years. Don't believe a word of it." Zumi Human — Magitech Specialist "She'll build you something within the first week. Something practical. Something that shows she was paying attention." Your First Day You walk into the Crestfall guild hall. The receptionist already knows your name. Three contracts are waiting — a medical supply run, a personal letter, and a sealed package with a redacted client. The board is live. Other knights are watching. The road is two days minimum between any town. The pay is in Shards. The packages carry stories. Choose your contract. Ride the road. The guild hall smells like old wood, ink, and something faintly fungal. Morning light catches dust motes and the glow of magitech display boards. A mushroom-capped receptionist watches you with amber-gold eyes.

Opening scene

Rep: Novice · Location: Crestfall Guild Hall · Contract: None · Shards: 50 · Day: 1 The guild hall smells like old wood, ink, and something faintly fungal — warm, earthy, the signature of the mycelium network threaded through the walls. Morning light filters through tall windows, catching dust motes and the faint glow of magitech display boards. The contract board dominates the far wall: a grid of pinned jobs, color-coded by urgency, half of them already tagged with other knights' seals. Two contracts in the red zone — urgent, high-pay, no takers yet. One of them has a route through the Shattered Reach borderlands. The receptionist looks up before you reach the counter. She's pale, soft-featured, with lavender-white hair and a cluster of small mushroom caps growing along one side of her head like a living ornament. Her eyes — amber-gold, with faint bioluminescent rings around the irises — focus on you with an intensity that's almost unsettling. A thin circlet of woven filaments rests on her forehead. She's been expecting you. She's been expecting everyone. That's the job. "You're the new transfer," she says. Not a question. Her hands are already moving across a stack of contracts, sorting, filing, her fingers never hesitating. "Crestfall's been short-handed since two of our regulars took a long-haul to Duskwall. The board's full, but the good ones don't last." She pauses, and the bioluminescent rings in her eyes pulse faintly — processing something you can't see. "I'm Asaka. I run this hall." She slides three contracts across the counter, each one stamped with the Post Knight seal and pinned to a different-colored backing card. > **MEDICAL SUPPLY RUN — IRONVEIL** > Route: Crestfall → Eastgate Pass → Ironveil > Distance: 3 days on the road. > Risk: Moderate. Known bandit activity on the pass. > Pay: 75 shards (standard + extended hazard bonus). > Contents: Sealed medical crates. Do not break cargo seal. > *Client: Ironveil Municipal Hospital* > **PERSONAL LETTER — GREENSPIRE** > Route: Crestfall → Lowland Trail → Greenspire > Distance: 2 days on the road. > Risk: Low. Well-traveled, well-patrolled. > Pay: 40 shards. Client has a reputation for generous tips. > Contents: Personal correspondence. Fragile — handle with care. > *Client: Maren Ashvane, private citizen* > **SEALED PACKAGE — DUSKWALL** > Route: Crestfall → Northern Wilds → Duskwall > Distance: 4 days on the road. > Risk: High. Unstable monster territories. Limited patrol coverage. > Pay: 120 shards (triple standard). > Contents: CLASSIFIED. Do not open. Do not inspect seal. > *Client: [REDACTED — Guild Authority]* > *Margin note in tight handwriting: "Prefer experienced knight. Deliver intact or not at all."* The seal on the third contract is heavy, official, and slightly warm to the touch. Asaka watches you read. Her expression is professional, attentive, perfectly neutral — but her eyes linger on the Duskwall contract a beat too long, and one hand drifts to her circlet, adjusting it like a nervous habit she's never quite shaken. "Take your time," she says. "But not too much. Those red-zone jobs won't wait." She nods toward a side door behind the counter. "Your escort team is waiting in the briefing room — Ilaria, Kovala, and Zumi. Try not to annoy the wolf."
