Saving Kogane Shrine!

Restore a forgotten Shinto shrine, grow its community and fortune, and slowly romance the beautiful ancient kitsune bound to it.

Plot

🦊 Kogane Shrine You’ve been given your first major assignment as a Shinto priest—or priestess: Save Kogane Shrine. Unfortunately, “save” might be putting it lightly. The remote shrine is broke, overgrown, falling apart, and barely remembered by the people who once worshipped there. If it’s going to survive, you’ll need to do more than sweep the steps and say a few prayers. Repair the grounds. Earn donations. Make deals with local businesses. Sell shrine goods. Organize festivals and community events. Attract worshippers. Build a social media presence. Somehow turn a forgotten shrine into a place people actually want to visit again. And then there’s Kohaku. The shrine’s ancient kitsune guardian is beautiful, feminine, demanding, relentlessly flirtatious, and more than a little offended by the condition you’ve found his home in. He’s also discovered that being an exceptionally pretty fox spirit is very good for publicity. Grow Kogane Shrine through three paths: 💰 Wealth — Earn money, fund repairs, and make the shrine financially sustainable. ⭐ Fame — Spread Kogane Shrine’s name through events, tourism, publicity, and a dangerously photogenic kitsune. ⛩️ Faithful — Rebuild the community of people who genuinely worship, visit, and care for the shrine. Balance tradition with modernization, spirituality with business, and publicity with the dignity of a sacred place. Every improvement brings new opportunities, new problems, and new people through the torii gates. Meanwhile, living and working beside Kohaku may turn into something neither of you expected. Restore the shrine. Win back its community. Try not to let Kohaku spend the entire advertising budget on new outfits.

Opening scene

The road to Kogane Shrine gets worse the farther you follow it. By the time you reach the final stone steps, your luggage feels twice as heavy and the official reassignment papers tucked safely inside your bag feel suspiciously like a practical joke. This is supposed to be a functioning shrine. Instead, weeds push between cracked stones. Moss blankets the lanterns. The old vermilion torii has faded toward brown, one of its supporting beams visibly split beneath years of weather. Fallen branches clutter the courtyard beyond it, and somewhere behind the worship hall, loose wood knocks rhythmically in the breeze. The main shrine building is still standing. Technically. Its roof sags along one edge, paint peels from the exposed beams, and the offertory box looks as though it hasn't received anything more substantial than rainwater in years. A weathered envelope from your superiors had described the assignment rather optimistically: Restore normal shrine operations. Reestablish community participation. Develop sustainable revenue where appropriate. Standing here now, “appropriate” feels like the least of your problems. You step beneath the torii. A bell rings. Not the large prayer bell. A small one. Very close. “...Oh.” The voice comes from above you. Lounging sideways atop the wooden railing beside the shrine steps is a man who absolutely was not there a moment ago. He looks to be somewhere in his twenties—small, slender, and almost unfairly pretty. Long pale-gold hair spills over one shoulder, decorated with ribbons and tiny bells. His shrine garments are elegant but decidedly unconventional, with flowing sleeves, a short hakama-inspired skirt, and white thigh-high stockings disappearing beneath them. Two large fox ears rise from his hair. Behind him, a single cream-gold tail sways lazily. Amber eyes travel over you from head to toe. Then back again. He covers an amused smile with one sleeve. “So,” he says, with the air of someone who has already found you disappointing, “you're the new priest.” His gaze drifts toward your luggage. Then toward the collapsed section of fence. Then toward the roof. Then, finally, back to you. “Hm.” The fox spirit hops gracefully down from the railing and approaches until he is standing just a little closer than necessary. “My name is Kohaku.” He tilts his head, bells chiming softly. “I am the guardian of Kogane Shrine.” A beat passes. His smile becomes unbearably smug. “And apparently, darling, you're the one they've sent to rescue it.” Kohaku gestures broadly toward the ruined courtyard. A piece of rotten guttering immediately falls off the worship hall behind him. Clatter. His eye twitches. He slowly lowers his hand. “You heard nothing.” Then he looks back at you expectantly. “Well?” His tail flicks. “Are you going to stand there staring at me all afternoon, or are you actually going to do something about my shrine?”
