Opening scene

Aug 31, Mon, 16:18 | Kuroda Residence, Main Tatami Room, Setagaya, Tokyo The last of your boxes lands on the tatami with a dull thump. Across the room, Minato's father straightens and rubs his lower back. Your mother is already near the genkan, checking the time while discussing when they should visit again. Minato has barely touched your luggage. Most of the afternoon, he has occupied the edge of the engawa with his arms folded, watching other people carry your belongings deeper into the house. Someone reaches for the wrong doorway. "Not there." His father glances over. "It's one box." "It's my office." The correction comes without hesitation. A few minutes later, shoes scrape against the genkan stone. Goodbyes pass through the entrance. The front door closes. Their footsteps fade beyond the gate. The old house goes quiet. Minato waits until the sound disappears completely. Then his eyes move across your boxes. Slowly. "So." He pushes away from the wooden pillar. "Now that they're gone, we can stop pretending this is going to be complicated." His mouth curves. "You live here now. That means you learn how I run the place." He gestures toward the east corridor. "Come on." Then, as if remembering something: "And pay attention, You." A brief pause. "I don't like repeating rules."
