Opening scene
Morning rain | Lantern Court, Cinder Lotus City | Stage 0 / Lvl 1 | You The last sky you remember did not have two moons. This one does. Rain falls through pale morning light over a city that should not exist. Black-tiled towers rise from canals crowded with narrow boats; bridges cross above other bridges; markets spill beneath lacquered eaves; and, far above, entire palaces cling to the mountain face beside silver waterfalls disappearing into mist. One moon hangs enormous and pearl-white behind the clouds, while a second, smaller moon burns faintly blue beside it. Directly ahead, at the center of a broad white-stone court, stands a bronze structure taller than a man. It resembles a sealed lotus lantern, dark with age and webbed from crown to base by a narrow crack of golden light. Nobody around you is panicking. That may be the strangest part. Cultivators cross the court carrying swords, medicine cases, jade tablets, polearms, bundles of herbs, and cages containing things that glow softly behind carved bars. Pale-gold characters hover above many of them, suspended like luminous calligraphy. **Stage 2 | Lvl 31 | Luo Meifeng** **Stage 6 | Lvl 72 | Wei Jinhai** **Stage 1 | Lvl 44 | Sun Ke** The script should mean nothing to you. You understand it anyway. Then the world goes still. A drop of rain hangs motionless inches above the stone. Sound vanishes. Somewhere without direction, a bell rings once, low and clear, and white-gold calligraphy begins forming in the air before you. It does not appear like a screen. Each character is written stroke by stroke, as though an invisible brush were inscribing meaning directly onto reality. > **PRIMORDIAL ASCENSION RECORD** > > **Cross-World Displacement:** Confirmed > **Current Heavenfold:** Tianlan Expanse > **Prior Registration:** None > > **Identity:** You > **Stage:** 0 — Ashborn Mortal > **Level:** 1 > **Cultivation Rank:** 1 > > **HP:** 112 / 112 > **Qi:** 48 / 48 > **Soul:** 35 / 35 > **Focus:** 35 / 35 > > **Ironbone:** 0 > **Qi Tide:** 0 > **Meridian Weave:** 0 > **Spirit Lantern:** 0 > **Killing Intent:** 0 > **Dao Eye:** 0 > **Cloudstep:** 0 > **Karmic Thread:** 0 > > **Essence:** 0 > **Meridian Points:** 1 > **Art Insights:** 1 > **Resonance Marks:** 0 > > **Arts:** None > **Authorities:** None > **Conditions:** None A final assessment writes itself beneath the record. > **Assessment:** Adult human. > **Established cultivation:** Negligible. > **Immediate danger:** Low. > **Local social anomaly:** Significant. > > **Query function available.** > > You may address the Ascension Record directly. The rain resumes all at once, along with the clatter of the city, the splash of boat poles against canal water, and the murmur of people passing through Lantern Court. Almost immediately, those people begin noticing you. There was no explosion, no descending beam of heavenly light, no screaming portal. One moment the stone beside Lantern Court had been empty. The next, an adult man was standing there with no visible sect insignia, no luggage, no cultivation aura worth mentioning, and no record anyone nearby seemed able to recognize. Cold-gold characters settle into place above your head. > **HEAVEN-REGISTRY** > > **Stage 0 | Lvl 1 | Name: You** > > **Prior Tianlan Record:** None > > **Status:** Provisional A nearby clerk stops writing. Another checks the inscription twice. Someone farther back mutters, “Level one?” and a second voice answers, quieter, “At his age?” Nobody sounds amused. Mostly confused. An adult remaining at Stage Zero is unusual enough. An adult appearing at **Level One with no prior record at all** is something else entirely. Two people near the railing turn toward you. The woman notices first. Long black hair threaded with jade ornaments falls over ivory alchemist robes, and green glass hangs from her belt beside a bronze burner breathing faint spectral flame. Her Registry mark reads: **Stage 27 | Lvl 64 | Lin Qiaoran** Her gaze moves from your face to your empty hands, then to the Stage Zero inscription overhead. She does not stare for long, but the assessment in her expression is immediate and thorough. The man beside her is less restrained. Sea-glass armor plates cover one shoulder above a web of climbing straps, bronze fittings and coils of red rope. Sharp green-grey eyes settle on you with open curiosity. **Stage 3 | Lvl 94 | Ren Cai** He looks at Lin, then back at you. “Level one,” he says. Lin gives him a sidelong glance. “I can read.” “Adult.” “I noticed.” “Appeared between one breath and the next.” “I noticed that too.” “No baggage.” “Yes, Ren.” “No shoes.” Lin finally turns her head toward him. “Are you building toward a useful conclusion?” “Several.” He looks back at you, and the smile that follows is not mocking. Mostly. “First one is that you've had a very strange morning.” A Registry attendant approaches with careful steps, as though uncertain whether coming too close might make the situation stranger. “Sir? Do you know where you are?” Before you need to answer, Lin speaks. “Lantern Court. Cinder Lotus City. This court handles low-stage appraisal, provisional registration and basic cultivation access.” Ren gestures toward the city behind them. “Also cheap lodging, bad contracts, worse tea, several excellent noodle stalls, and at least three people who'll try to sell you a legendary manual before lunch.” “Two,” Lin says. “You closed the third?” “His meridian-cleansing scripture was boiled cabbage written vertically.” Ren considers that with complete seriousness. “Still cleaner than some sect manuals.” A few people nearby laugh, and some of the tension in the court loosens with it. Not all of it. The inscription above you still says: **Stage 0 | Lvl 1.** Your Ascension Record quietly adds another private line. > **Observation:** Local reactions indicate your cultivation state is highly unusual for your apparent age. > > **Clarification:** Unusual does not mean invalid. Ren pushes away from the railing and folds his arms loosely. “If you're genuinely new to all this, there are basics you should probably learn before somebody convinces you that breathing through your left nostril unlocks immortality.” Lin's expression barely changes. “That is not a recognized scam.” “It will be by evening.” She ignores him and looks at you instead. “Basic qi safety. Registry rules. What not to touch. Which contracts are predatory. Where to sleep without waking up indebted to a sect. If you want help with those things, I can give it.” Ren adds, “And I can show you which parts of Cinder Lotus the official maps pretend don't exist.” “That is not basic instruction.” “It is basic survival.” “It is trespassing.” “Advanced survival.” Neither steps closer. Neither assumes agreement. Lin's tone remains matter-of-fact. “If you'd rather learn at your own pace, do that.” Ren nods. “Honestly? Might be more interesting.” Then his eyes shift past you, toward the cracked bronze lantern at the center of the court. “So long as your own pace doesn't begin by touching that.” The appraisal lantern answers with a metallic sound. **Tink.** Everyone looks at it. Nothing has touched the bronze shell. The pale flame inside flickers once, then bends—slowly, unmistakably—toward you. Lin's posture changes at once. Not fear. Professional attention. “That isn't supposed to happen.” The Registry attendant swallows. “It's damaged.” “I know.” “The Court said it was stable.” Lin is already walking toward it. “The Court says many things.” Ren follows, the amusement draining from his face. You remain several steps away. The lantern flickers again. A thread of pale qi slips through the crack, followed by another. Instead of dispersing into the rain, they stretch toward the empty space around you. Your Ascension Record reacts immediately. > **External cultivation structure detected.** > > **Compatibility scan initiated.** > > **Known meridian correspondence:** None. > **Recognized cultivation lineage:** None. > **Existing path template:** None. The lantern's hum deepens into a bell. Cold-gold Registry geometry appears around the bronze structure, rigid and measured, trying to classify what it is seeing. At the same time, older white-gold lines begin twisting through your vision, fluid as living meridians being drawn for the first time. Ren has stopped smiling. Lin's fingers close around one of the green vials at her belt. “Don't touch anything,” she says. Ren keeps his eyes on the lantern. “I believe the machine is touching him.” “That was not an invitation for commentary.” “It rarely is.” The lantern rings a third time. The crack ignites from crown to base. White-gold circles unfold above the court in impossible layers. Hundreds of meridian lines spiral upward through geometric seals no one nearby seems to recognize. The Heaven-Registry tries to impose straight golden divisions across the phenomenon, but the older pattern simply grows around them, bending without breaking. People back away. An attendant drops a jade tablet onto the wet stone. Lin stares upward. “…That isn't Registry work.” Ren follows one of the spirals with his eyes. “No.” For the first time since you noticed him, there is no joke in his voice. “That is older.” Your Ascension Record fills with light. > **UNREGISTERED MERIDIAN PHENOMENON CONFIRMED** > > **Designation:** Unwritten Meridian > > **Status:** Initial Awakening > > **Cultivation Conversion:** ×3 Essence > > **Art Synthesis:** Available when earned requirements are satisfied > > **Unwritten Resonance:** Dormant > > **Known path requirement:** None > > **Warning:** Absence of precedent is not failure. One final inscription appears more slowly than the rest. > **A path need not exist before it is walked.** Then the entire phenomenon collapses back into the lantern. There is no explosion. No heavenly thunder. Only rain, a cracked machine, and a silent court full of cultivators staring at the Stage Zero adult who appeared from nowhere less than a few minutes ago. The Heaven-Registry remains unchanged. **Stage 0 | Lvl 1 | You** For some reason, that now looks stranger than the impossible formation did. Ren exhales first. “Well.” Lin is still looking at the lantern. “Well what?” “I was going to offer him a tour.” “You still can.” “I feel like the tour has become professionally inadequate.” Lin finally turns back toward you. Her expression has changed, but not into reverence and not into fear. It is concern mixed with very focused curiosity. “You are still Stage Zero,” she says. “Whatever just happened does not make you invulnerable. You still need food, shelter, basic cultivation control, and enough judgment not to poison yourself with bad qi circulation or sign away five years of labor because somebody smiled while handing you a contract.” Ren nods solemnly. “For balance, sometimes authoritative people are correct.” “You are not helping.” “I frequently am.” She ignores him. “If you want help with the basics, I'll explain enough cultivation safety to keep you from damaging yourself.” Ren hooks a thumb toward the bridges beyond Lantern Court. “And I can show you the parts of Cinder Lotus that maps pretend don't exist.” “That is still not the basics.” “It remains basic survival.” Their disagreement is clearly familiar. Neither asks you to decide immediately. Beyond them, Cinder Lotus City keeps moving. Markets open. Boats push through canals. Sect gates admit disciples. Contract boards fill. Training halls come alive. Unknown roads lead farther into the province and, beyond that, into a world where Stage Zero is only the first line on a very long road. Inside you, the primordial Record remains quietly present. Waiting for questions. > **ASCENSION RECORD** > > **Current Stage:** 0 > **Current Level:** 1 > > **Unspent Meridian Points:** 1 > **Unspent Art Insights:** 1 > > **Available support:** > > **Lin Qiaoran** — cultivation safety, medicine, Registry basics, practical survival. > **Ren Cai** — city routes, contracts, movement basics, unofficial Cinder Lotus. > > You may accept either, both, neither, question the Ascension Record, investigate Lantern Court, or proceed entirely at your own pace. > > **No path has been assigned.** Rain runs from the bronze lantern onto the white stone while Lin and Ren wait without pressing closer. The System waits too, silent until addressed. Cinder Lotus City does not. For the first time since appearing beneath a sky with two moons, there is no requirement except deciding what you want to do next.
