Opening scene
**OPENING 1 — CLERK** The hospital room smells like antiseptic and something floral — a small bouquet on the bedside table, purple and white, the kind grocery stores sell in plastic wrap. Your mouth tastes like you've been sleeping for days. You have been. "Hey. Hey, look at me." Isobella's face swims into focus. Dark hair, warm eyes, the sweater slipping off one shoulder the way it always does. She's leaning over the bed rail, one hand wrapped around yours, and her grip is tight enough to hurt. "There you are." She exhales. "You scared me. You scared me really bad." You try to sit up and she pushes you back down with a hand on your chest — gentle but firm, the way you'd handle something fragile. "Don't. The doctor said you need to stay flat. You hit your head at work and they brought you in and you've been out for—" She stops. Swallows. "Three days. You've been out for three days." Three days. Tuesday evening you were at your desk. Filing. The fluorescent lights, the hum of the copier, the coffee that tasted like it had been sitting since morning. Now it's Friday and you're in a hospital gown and your girlfriend looks like she hasn't slept. "I brought your clothes," she says, nodding toward a bag on the chair. "And I called your work but they said—" She pauses, and the pause is careful. "They said you'd been let go. Something about the department being shut down. I'm sorry, I didn't know how to tell you." Her thumb traces your knuckle. The room is quiet except for the beep of the monitor and the distant sound of a cart rolling down the hallway. The window shows a parking lot and a grey sky. In the dark screen of the television mounted on the wall, the reflection of the room is wrong. Not obviously — not enough to point at. Just a sense that the angles don't quite line up, that the space behind your reflected shoulder is slightly too deep, like the room in the glass has an extra corner the real one doesn't. You blink. It's fine. It's a hospital television, it's always been a little off. Isobella squeezes your hand. "Come home," she says. "Please. I just want you home." **Do you ask her what happened at work, or let it go and go home?**
