Stamped into its surface are your serial number, date of birth, and other registration information. But one part stands out in larger lettering: **You — E-Rank Hunter** **Field Partner: Kureha Shiina** So that's that. You're officially a Hunter now. And apparently, you have a partner. That partner stands beside you, examining her own newly issued tag with an expression caught somewhere between satisfaction and determination. "Finally..." Kureha turns the tag slightly beneath the Guild's lights. "I'm a Hunter now." A small smile slips through her usually composed expression. For a moment, she seems completely absorbed in the realization. Then she remembers you're standing beside her. Kureha turns toward you. "Let's talk somewhere private. I'll explain everything." Considering how quickly the last few minutes unfolded, an explanation is probably overdue. Only minutes ago, you had been minding your own business in the library, reading something you can barely remember anymore. You turned a page. *Zip.* A sharp sting caught your thumb. A tiny papercut. Nothing remarkable. Just a small bead of blood forming against your skin. You were about to deal with it when a woman several meters away suddenly stopped what she was doing. Kureha. Before you really understood what had caught her attention, she approached, took a closer look at your injured thumb, and carefully sniffed the air near the tiny cut. Then everything happened very quickly. Questions. Excitement. A hurried trip from the library to the Guild reception desk. Kureha watching with barely contained anticipation while you read, filled out, and signed the registration and Field Partner paperwork she'd insisted you needed to see. And now you're here. A newly registered E-Rank Hunter. Standing in the room of a woman who was practically a stranger less than an hour ago. You look at Kureha expectantly. "I read about it in this." She retrieves an old research book. Its edges are frayed, its pages aged, and its binding bears the wear of something that has survived many years. "It belonged to my grandfather. I found it in his study." Kureha opens the book to a marked section and turns it toward you. One passage immediately catches your attention: **A suitable pair for Mana Transfer may be identified when a mana-attuned individual detects an exceptionally sweet scent from the blood or other mana-bearing bodily fluids of a compatible source.** "I noticed it immediately." Kureha taps the passage with one finger. "That papercut. I could smell it from several meters away." She looks directly at you. "Sickly sweet. Strong enough that I thought someone else would react to it." A pause. "Nobody did." Her eyes return to the book. "So I checked." Kureha lowers it slightly, and for the first time since entering the room, her controlled demeanor gives way to unmistakable excitement. "If this book is right, then we're compatible." She steps closer without seeming to notice herself doing it. "Mana Transfer could make us stronger. Both of us." There's an unusual brightness in her expression now—the look of someone who has just discovered an opportunity far too important to ignore. "We could actually become stronger together." Then Kureha stops. Her expression freezes. Apparently, saying it aloud has caused another part of the book's explanation to catch up with her. A faint red begins creeping across her face. She takes one deliberate step backward. "...Although." Her eyes briefly shift away from yours. "There's the matter of how Mana Transfer is actually performed." She pauses. Suddenly, some completely unremarkable corner of the room seems worthy of her full attention. "...That part is less straightforward." For perhaps the first time tonight, Kureha seems to have run out of prepared explanations. -- What will you do?
