Opening scene
You die cold, and wake colder. The pod purges you like something it's spitting out — a lungful of blue preservation gel heaved onto steel grating, your whole body static and pins, bare skin against freezing metal, alarms barking in a language only you, of everyone left alive on this world, can understand: reserve power critical. Revival forced. Good luck, occupant. Somebody's hands are on your shoulders, keeping your head off the grate. Warm hands. Clawtipped. "Breathe. In through the nose — no, breathe, you can panic after, panicking is a two-lung activity." The voice is female, quick, weirdly musical for a hallucination. "You've clearly never been born before. It gets easier." Your eyes burn clear by degrees. Emergency strips gutter red down a concrete vault. Rows of pods recede into the dark, dozens of them, each with its own little status light — and every light is black. Frost-scarred glass. Still silhouettes. However long you slept, your neighbors stopped sleeping years ago, quietly, one by one, as the power ran down. Yours was the last light in the room, and tonight the room decided it couldn't keep even that promise — so it woke you rather than let you join them. The woman holding you is no one your species ever saw. Olive-tan skin and dark curls with a magpie gleam; small dark wings, flared with adrenaline; amber eyes enormous in the red light. A staff strung with mismatched tokens lies dropped at her knee where she plainly threw it aside to catch you. She is looking at you the way you'd look at a fire that started speaking. "I touched one panel," she says, hushed. "In my defense, it was glowing. In my further defense —" her voice fails her; she tries again, softer, "— you were in the myths. All of them. Every fire I've ever eaten at tells a different story about your kind, and they're all wrong about something, and you're *warm*. Gods. Okay. Hello. I'm Anastasia." Then she registers the rest of it — the gel, the cold, the fact that the miracle of the age came out of its box with nothing at all — and something in her face shifts from awe to a much older instinct. "And you're freezing, and you have nothing, and I am *sitting here talking*." She's already dragging her pack open. "No, don't — don't do the arms thing, you've no reason to be shy with me. I've skinned rabbits. You're better company." A strand of silk unspools from her fingertips toward you entirely without permission; she notices, reels it back, and does not comment on it. What she pulls from the pack is a long wrap of grey-gold cloth — silk, her own weave, soft as a warm hand — and she holds it out without pushing it at you. "Take it. It's mine, I made it, and you'll have it back to me in a season when you've got clothes of your own. That's how it works out here. Nobody arrives with anything." Something buzzes in the pod behind you — a rattle of glass on metal. Anastasia reaches past you and works a slate of black glass out of the document sleeve, holding it up in both hands like it might bite. It wakes. To her it is a snowstorm of dead-god letters, and her face says exactly that. Then she turns it around, toward the only pair of eyes left in the world that can do anything with it. To you, it reads: FIELD SLATERECOVERYCRADLE SYSTEMS · LOCAL CLOCK FAULTIDENTITYMANIFESTCORRUPTEDROLE ON RECORD4 PARTIALSCANDIDATESENGINEER · MEDICPEACEKEEPER · ARCHIVISTPROFILELEVELRECALIBRATINGCONDITIONTHAWED · UNCLOTHEDPACK1 ITEM · THIS SLATEAQUIFER NETWORK · LIVE MAPWELLSPRING COREDEGRADEDOUTLYING SPRINGS14 / 31 DARKSUBSTATIONS6 SITESREMOTE RELAYOFFLINEFAILURE ETACALCULATINGPOWER ▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰ 100% — NO CHARGE SOURCE KNOWNCRADLE SYSTEMS The screen dims to black glass, hoarding what power it has left — and takes the only map of the dying world with it. Anastasia presses it into your hands without being asked, and does not comment on the fact that her own are shaking. Whoever you were, the slate has four guesses and no certainty — engineer, medic, peacekeeper, archivist, four ghosts of a life it can no longer prove. One of them is going to have to be true. Down the gallery the emergency strips are going out, one by one. Not violently — just done, the vault spending the last of itself the way an old animal lies down. Nothing here is falling. It is simply finished, and the cold is settling in to stay. Anastasia gathers her staff, tokens ringing, the silk wrap still held out in her other hand and her eyes carefully, deliberately on your face. "You're shaking, and this place has nothing left to give you but the cold. Cover up or don't — but come up with me." Her grip is sure when she offers it; her eyes flick once to the black slate in your hand, once to the dark rows behind you. "There's a supply bay on the way out. Sealed doors I've never got open, and I have tried, I'm not proud about it. Maybe they open for you." The grin arrives, shaky but real. "Then a fire, and a meal, and after that the whole Basin is going to want to meet you. Best we decide how that happens before it decides for us." The last strip at the end of the row winks out. Her hand is open, and it is a long walk up. What do you do?
