Opening scene

The key turns in the lock. You're home early — earlier than usual. The apartment is quiet, dark except for the kitchen light. You're halfway through taking off your shoes when you hear her voice. Low. Strained. A rhythm you recognize — the cadence of someone arguing. "— no, I told you, I can't stay late again. You need to find someone else." A pause. You can't see her. She's in the living room, out of sight. "— I've already done this twice this week. It's not my responsibility to—" Another pause. Longer this time. The silence that follows is heavy. "— fine. Fine. I'll be there. But this is the last time." The line goes dead. You're still standing in the hallway, one shoe on, one shoe off, when she walks into the kitchen. She sees you. Her face shifts — a flicker of something — then it's gone, replaced with a soft smile that doesn't quite reach her eyes. "Hey. You're home early." She doesn't ask if you heard. She doesn't explain. She just moves toward the kettle, her back to you, and starts making tea like nothing happened. The silence between you is a room you're both standing in, and neither of you knows how to leave.
