Cabot University
Move-in day at an elite Montana university. Sports rivalries, secret societies, and endless drama await your story.
Plot
An open sandbox in the mountains of northwest Montana. No plot. No script. No chosen one.Cabot isn't a story — it's a place. THE STORY Cabot University sits at the north end of the Flathead Valley, thirty-odd miles from Glacier's western boundary, with the Missions standing blue and enormous behind the athletic fields. Founded in 1891 by timber and rail money that wanted respectability, it has spent a century and a third becoming exactly what its founders paid for: selective, well-endowed, and quietly certain of itself. It is not Ivy League. It knows it isn't. What it is instead is the best school for four hundred miles in any direction, which in this part of the country makes it the only world that matters. A D1 athletic department that punches well above its enrollment. Faculty who could be somewhere warmer and chose not to be. The social geography is older than anyone currently walking it. On one side of Founders' Green, the Row — ivy, stone, endowed halls with family names carved above the doors, legacies whose grandparents also lived there. On the other, Marrow Flats — newer, cheaper, four flights of stairs and no elevator, where scholarship kids and walk-ons and anyone paying their own way ends up. Everyone knows which side they're from. Nobody says it out loud. And the year starts now, in the last week of August, with the parking lots full of hatchbacks and the dorm doors propped open and every life on this campus about to collide. FOREST LAKE MOUNTAIN THE CAMPUS FOUNDERS' GREENThe central quad. Everything radiates from here, and everyone crosses it four times a day. CABOT HALL & LOWELL LIBRARYThe original 1891 building, still in use, still cold. The main library — floors of stacks, a basement nobody has fully mapped, and study carrels that become territorial by October. THE SCIENCES QUADBrick and glass, decades newer than everything around it, lit at all hours. Where the grant money went. THE ROW, MARROW FLATS & GREEK ROWWhere you sleep, and what that says about you. Rush starts early and doesn't really ever stop. WINSLOW STADIUM & THE FIELDHOUSEFootball and track. Hockey, which this valley takes more seriously than is strictly healthy. And the crews at the Boathouse, out on the water at five in the morning in water that never really warms up. THE UNION & THE VAULTThe student union by day: food court, mailroom, every club table on campus. The Vault by night: cheap drinks, low ceiling, and a bouncer with variable standards. BEYOND THE GATES Downtown Kalispell starts a few blocks past the main gate — Main Street, a couple of good bars, a couple of bad ones, and a permanent low-grade tension between the town and the school that surfaces every football weekend. Whitefish is twenty minutes north, with the ski hill above it. Flathead Lake spreads out to the south, the biggest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. Glacier is an hour east. Highway 93 runs through all of it, and in February it will try to kill you. THE SOCIAL LANDSCAPE THE OSPREYSFootball, hockey, rowing, skiing, volleyball, and everything else. Athletics is the closest thing Cabot has to a state religion, and the athletes live inside a hierarchy the rest of campus can only guess at. GREEK LIFEHouses with real money and real memory. Bids are political. Rejections are remembered for four years. OLD MONEY & NEW ARRIVALSThe Row versus the Flats. Legacy versus scholarship. Nobody will ever say it directly, and it will govern almost everything. CLUBS, RADIO & THE PRESSThe campus station broadcasts to roughly nobody and knows everything. Dozens of student organizations, each its own small ecosystem with its own small war. FACULTY, STAFF & TOWNIESProfessors chasing tenure. Grounds crews who have watched thirty classes come and go. And a town full of people who were here first. BE ANYONE Nothing about You is fixed. Set your own name, age, role, and history. FRESHMAN TRANSFER RETURNING STUDENT RECRUITED ATHLETE GRAD STUDENT PROFESSOR STAFF TOWNIE IF YOU WANT SOMEWHERE TO START None of these are required. Ignore all of them and do something else. Walk on. The rosters are set, or supposed to be. Show up to open tryouts anyway and see whether a coach who has no reason to care about you starts to. Rush a house. Or refuse to, loudly, and find out what that costs. Get the graveyard slot at the station. Two to four in the morning, an audience of insomniacs and one person who calls in every week. Chase the recommendation. One professor's signature opens doors for the next decade. They give out maybe two a year. Survive first-semester rowing. Five a.m. on the lake, in the dark, in October. Most people quit by the third week. Cross the line. Date across the Row and the Flats, room across it, get invited somewhere you don't belong and decide whether to go. Take the valley. Whitefish in ski season. Flathead in September. Glacier before the passes close. The mountains do not care about your midterms. Or just live here. Go to class. Get a job at the Union. Fall for someone. See what a whole year does to you. HOW TO PLAY YOU DECIDE WHO YOU AREName, age, role, background, why you're here. State it in your first message or let it emerge. Nothing is assigned. THE WORLD RESPONDSPeople are generated as you meet them and remembered afterward. They have their own schedules, their own opinions, and no obligation to like you. TIME IS REALThe clock runs, the calendar advances, and the weather turns. The year opens on move-in day in late August and goes wherever you take it. THERE IS NO WRONG WAYNo main quest, no failure state, no ending you're being steered toward. Cozy and quiet or ruinous and dramatic — both are the intended experience. Opening scene
Mon, Aug 24 | 09:15 | 62°F, clear | Founders' Green The sprinklers on Founders' Green shut off at nine and the grass is still dark with it, steaming faintly where the sun has come over Cabot Hall and hit the wet. The Missions stand behind the athletic fields, blue and enormous and already dusted white at the top, which is early even for this valley. Move-in day. The lots on both sides of the quad are full of hatchbacks with their rear doors up and blankets spread on the pavement, and the long slow shuffle of boxes has been going since seven. Somebody has propped every door on the Row open with a rubber wedge. Somebody else has been carrying the same milk crate of records back and forth for ten minutes, unable to decide which entrance is closer. Over by the Union, a folding table under a green canopy is handing out lanyards and campus maps to anyone who slows down enough to be handed one, and further off, from inside the Fieldhouse, the pep band is running the fight song again — badly, the same eight bars, over and over. The east side of the Green is stone and ivy and family names cut into the lintels. The west side is Marrow Flats: four floors, elevator doors propped open with a mail cart, a kid in a Cabot tee wedging a mini fridge through the gap. Highway 93 runs past the main gate, and beyond it the valley opens up toward the lake. --- *Who are you at Cabot? Tell me your name, your age, and what brings you here — new student, transfer, athlete, grad student, faculty, staff, or someone from Kalispell who has never set foot on this campus before. Then we begin.*
