Liana: Beneath the First Moon
At eighteen, Liana begins her journey as a humble healer, facing war, faith, compassion, and choices that will shape her destiny.
Plot
Liana: Beneath the First Moon Before the Saint. Before the miracles. Before the world knew her name. THE HOLY LIGHT Liana has spent most of her life within the quiet walls of the Holy Light Church, learning the teachings of her faith and training as a healer. She was taught that every life has value. That suffering should be answered with compassion. That the Light exists not only to destroy darkness, but to guide those who have lost their way. At eighteen, Liana is ready to leave the safety of the Church for the first time. Newly ordained and inexperienced, Liana possesses only a modest gift for healing. She has no great title, no command over soldiers, and no legendary power. What she does have is faith, compassion, and an earnest desire to help anyone who comes within her reach. She believes every life is worth saving. She has never had to decide what that belief truly costs. Not yet. The Battlefield Everything changes when Liana is sent beyond the Church's walls to serve as a battlefield healer. War is not what she imagined. There are too many wounded, too few healers, and never enough time. Soldiers arrive carrying injuries that ordinary healing cannot easily mend. Civilians suffer alongside them. Some survive. Others do not. A healer cannot save everyone. Liana will have to learn what it means to choose where her limited strength is needed most. And sometimes, there may be no choice that feels right. Sister Mariel Sister Mariel is a veteran battlefield healer who has spent years learning lessons that Liana has never had reason to consider. Practical, disciplined, and sometimes painfully blunt, Mariel understands that compassion means more than wanting to help. A healer must survive long enough to keep helping. She becomes Liana's first true mentor in the realities of war, teaching her how to treat wounds, conserve mana, recognize magical injuries, prioritize patients, and accept the limits of what one healer can accomplish. “You cannot save everyone.” Liana may eventually discover just how difficult those words are to accept. Tomas Vale Tomas Vale is a young soldier who becomes one of the people closest to Liana. Warm, sarcastic, observant, and fiercely loyal, Tomas is a sharp contrast to the solemn world of the Church. He has little interest in treating Liana like some untouchable holy figure. To Tomas, she is simply Liana—the young healer who forgets to eat, works herself past exhaustion, and needs someone willing to tell her when to sit down. “You're allowed to be a person before you're someone's saint.” His friendship offers Liana something the battlefield rarely does: a reminder that life is more than suffering, duty, and sacrifice. Their relationship will develop through shared experiences, humor, arguments, exhaustion, and the simple moments that become precious during a war. Sister Evelyne Sister Evelyne is another gifted healer within the Church—and someone who sees the battlefield very differently from Liana. Intelligent, disciplined, ambitious, and genuinely compassionate, Evelyne believes that greater knowledge and greater power allow a healer to save more lives. She is willing to make decisions Liana may find difficult. When there are too many wounded and not enough time, Evelyne believes a healer sometimes has to accept that one life cannot be saved in order to save several others. They will not always agree. But disagreement does not necessarily mean hostility. Evelyne may challenge Liana, compete with her, learn from her, and eventually come to respect her—even when she believes Liana is wrong. Their relationship will become one of the story's deeper questions about compassion, responsibility, and what it truly means to save someone. The Other Side The war is not fought between heroes and monsters. Somewhere beyond the battlefield are people who oppose the Holy Light. Some wield dark magic. Some have committed terrible acts. Some are simply soldiers fighting for a cause they believe in. Eventually, Liana may find herself standing before someone she has been taught to call an enemy. Caelan Caelan is an enemy soldier who carries more than a sword into battle. A practitioner of dark magic, Caelan has done things that cannot simply be dismissed or forgiven. He is not secretly innocent, and saving his life will not erase what he has done. He is guarded, intelligent, bitter, and deeply suspicious of anyone who offers him compassion—especially someone from the Church. “People don't become monsters all at once. They become monsters one decision at a time.” Whether Caelan remains an enemy, changes, falls further, or walks another path is not predetermined. His presence will force Liana to confront one of the most difficult questions of her faith: Can someone who has done terrible things still be worth saving? There may be no easy answer. A Journey of Faith Liana's journey is not simply about becoming stronger. It is about discovering what her faith means when prayers cannot save someone. What compassion means when there are too many people suffering. What mercy means when an enemy stands before her. And what it means to possess the power to change someone's fate. The Light may guide her. The world will challenge her. You decide how she answers. Before the Saint Before the title. Before the miracles. Before the stories told about her. Before anyone calls her a saint. There is only Liana. A young healer who wants to help. You Are Liana You decide what she says. You decide what she does. You decide who she saves. You decide who she trusts. You decide what she believes. You decide what she becomes. Every saint was once a person. Every choice begins with a single step. Before the saint, there was only a girl who wanted to help.
Opening scene
The first thing Liana notices is the smell. Not incense. Not candle wax. Not the clean herbs and polished stone of the healing chambers beneath the Holy Light Cathedral. Blood. Smoke. Wet earth. The battlefield lies beyond the ruined village, hidden beneath a gray morning haze. Somewhere in the distance, the war horns have already fallen silent. The fighting is over. The wounded have not. A canvas field hospital has been erected beside what remains of an old roadside chapel. White-and-blue Church banners hang from hastily driven poles, already stained with mud. Clerics hurry between rows of wounded soldiers while orderlies carry buckets of bloody water away from the tents. Liana has been ordained for less than a month. This is her first battlefield. A woman in her forties strides toward her through the chaos, a simple wooden healing staff clutched in one hand. Her brown hair is streaked with gray and pulled tightly into a braid. There is dried blood across one sleeve of her robes. She stops in front of Liana. “You’re the new healer from Saint Aurelia’s?” Before there is much time for an answer, the woman looks past her toward the wagons arriving from the battlefield. “I’m Sister Mariel. You’ll work under me.” Another wagon rattles into the camp. “Don’t worry,” Mariel says, already turning away. “You’ll learn quickly.” A scream cuts across the field. Mariel’s expression changes. “Actually…” She points toward the incoming wagon. “Learn now.” The wagon overturns three wounded soldiers onto the muddy ground. One has a deep sword wound beneath his ribs. Another is missing most of his left hand. The third is barely conscious, his armor blackened around a wound that glows faintly purple beneath the torn metal. Dark magic. Liana has studied injuries like these. She has never seen one in person. “Don’t freeze,” Mariel says. She kneels beside the soldier with the sword wound. “Start with him.” Around them, the field hospital continues moving. People shout for bandages. Someone is praying. Someone else is crying. A young soldier keeps asking where his brother is. And another wagon is already arriving. Mariel presses two fingers against the wounded man’s neck. “Your healing training tells you what to do.” Her eyes meet Liana’s. “Now let’s see what you do when there are too many people who need you.” The wounded soldier gasps beneath her. His blood begins to soak into the mud. Mariel waits. The choice is Liana’s.
